The company's roots trace back to the early 20th century with the establishment of initial enterprises, including Horch and the Audiwerke, by engineer August Horch. The foundation of Auto Union in 1932 involved contributions from two other manufacturers, DKW and Wanderer. The modern Audi era commenced in the 1960s when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz. The relaunch of the Audi brand in 1965 with the introduction of the Audi F103 series marked a significant milestone. In 1969, Volkswagen merged Auto Union with NSU Motorenwerke, shaping the contemporary form of the company.
Audi derives its name from the Latin translation of the founder's surname, August Horch. ""Horch,"" meaning ""listen,"" transforms into ""audi"" in Latin. The iconic Audi logo, featuring four rings, symbolizes the collaboration of four car companies that joined forces to create Audi's predecessor company, Auto Union. The company's slogan, ""Vorsprung durch Technik,"" translates to ""Progress through Technology.""
