Specs

In the local C-segment hatchback market, most models either lean towards practical family use or emphasize sporty handling, making it hard to find a choice that combines unique design with balanced performance. The 2019 MINI Clubman precisely addresses this pain point—it retains the iconic retro style of the MINI family, addresses the traditional MINI's cramped space problem with an extended wheelbase and five-door design, and offers competitive 2.0T turbocharged power and rich configurations in its class. Through a static experience and dynamic test drive, we comprehensively test whether it can meet the needs of consumers who seek individuality without compromising practicality.

From the exterior, the 2019 Clubman continues MINI's classic round headlights and waterfall-style grille, giving it high recognition. The most striking feature on the front is the standard LED headlights across all variants; the circular daytime running lights inside are highly distinctive when lit, complemented by the round fog lights on both sides below. The overall design is both retro and sophisticated. The body side lines are smooth, and the length of 4,253mm and a wheelbase of 2,670mm are longer than the traditional MINI Hatch. The chrome trim on the lower doors and the 18-inch alloy wheels (tire size 225/40 R18) enhance the sense of refinement on the sides. The rear design is a highlight of the Clubman—the unique split rear doors are not only a visual focus but also make it more convenient to access the trunk. The LED taillights are finished in a smoked design, and when lit, present the iconic "Union Jack" shape, which is highly recognizable at night.

Entering the interior, the Clubman continues MINI's characteristic design. The center console is tilted towards the driver, with a soft-touch material on top complemented by stitching details, offering a good tactile and visual texture. The multi-function steering wheel is wrapped in leather, providing a solid grip; the left side integrates buttons for volume control, call answering, and other functions, while the right side features paddle shifters (standard), reinforcing its sporty positioning. The instrument panel is an electronic backlit analog design, providing clear displays of real-time speed, RPM, and fuel consumption. The center console area is equipped with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, which operates smoothly. Although the screen is not very large, it suffices for daily use. Physical buttons are retained below for convenient blind operation. In terms of configuration, practical features such as Keyless entry/start, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air conditioning vents, and a 220V power outlet are all included. The front seats are electrically adjustable and come with memory function, ensuring comfort during long drives.

Space performance is a significant improvement of the Clubman compared to the traditional MINI. The headroom in the front row is approximately a fist and two fingers (based on a 175cm tall tester), with ample legroom. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split fold, with the trunk holding 360L in its standard state, which can be expanded further after folding, making it suitable for strollers or suitcases. The rear passenger space is also friendly for adults, offering legroom of about one fist and headroom of one fist. The central floor is slightly raised, but it does not affect temporary seating. The standard ISO FIX child seat interfaces cater to the needs of family users.

In terms of dynamic driving, the Clubman is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum output of 195PS, with maximum torque available from as low as 1350rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The power response is lively during startup, and you can feel a noticeable thrust with a light press on the accelerator. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7.2 seconds, and the actual experience feels indeed agile. When overtaking, deeply pressing the accelerator prompts quick downshifts from the transmission, resulting in direct power output. During highway cruising, the engine RPM stays around 2000, and noise levels are well-controlled. The chassis features a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension, tuned for sportiness without being overly stiff. Body roll is minimal when cornering, and the precise steering provides the driver with confidence. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations, avoiding harsh impacts and balancing handling with comfort.

In terms of fuel consumption, we tested under a mix of city and highway conditions, yielding a combined fuel consumption of about 7.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official 5.7L figure. Considering the 2.0T engine's power and typical driving habits, this result is average for its class. Braking performance is solid, with moderate stopping distances that inspire confidence. For driving comfort, sound insulation is well-executed, with wind and tire noise kept within acceptable limits at high speeds. The seats offer good support and cushioning, making long drives less tiring.

Overall, the core highlights of the 2019 MINI Clubman lie in its distinctive design, balanced space, and commendable performance. Compared to competitors like the Volkswagen Golf or Audi A3, it stands out with its unique design and brand appeal. Its practicality is not inferior to mainstream family cars, and its feature set is richer than that of entry-level luxury brand models. It suits two types of users: young individuals who pursue individuality and dislike conforming to the mainstream, and owners who need to balance family use without sacrificing driving pleasure. If you're looking for a car that turns heads, while being practical for daily use and offering adequate power, the 2019 MINI Clubman is a solid option.

After driving for half a year, this little car is so nimble when navigating through small alleys in the city. The steering wheel goes exactly where you point it. Awesome!

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. On the way, there was a sudden heavy rain. The LED headlights of the Clubman pierced through the rain curtain very clearly, and the rain-sensing wipers automatically adjusted their speed, saving a lot of effort. The mountain roads had many bends, and the 2.0T turbo unleashed its torque at just 1350 rpm. The chassis provided stable support when cornering, with no obvious body roll. However, the rear row felt slightly cramped for three adults, and the 225/40 R18 tire noise was a bit noticeable at high speeds. Overall, the retro-look exterior is timeless and attractive, the performance is adequate for daily use, and the safety features are reassuring. A well-deserved 4 stars.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Hill. Just after passing the toll booth, we encountered a heavy downpour. The LED headlights of the Clubman had excellent penetration, and the rain-sensing wipers automatically cleared the rain curtain. Holding the paddle-shift steering wheel, the 2.0T turbo unleashed its torque at 1500 rpm, overtaking effortlessly on the slippery mountain roads. The children in the back row slept soundly in the ISOFIX seat, and the 360L trunk space accommodated a picnic basket and folding chairs. The 12-speaker sound system played folk songs mixed with the sound of rain. This little British box was safe and nimble in the Malaysian rain.

Last week, I went on a countryside trip to the foot of Genting Mountain with my family. A sudden heavy rain hit, and the LED automatic headlights of the Clubman instantly lit up, while the rain-sensing wipers also started promptly. On the winding road, the 2.0T turbo's torque, which kicks in at 1350 rpm, made uphill climbs very easy, and the chassis tuning was stable. However, the rear space felt slightly cramped for me at 175cm. While the exterior is classic, the rear door design is somewhat niche. In terms of safety, the 6 airbags and the reversing camera provided reassurance when reversing on the slippery mountain road, though the price is slightly high. Overall, a reasonable 4 out of 5.
