2020 Lexus LC 500 Review

In Malaysia's luxury coupe market, there aren’t many models that balance daily practicality with driving pleasure—most models either lean heavily towards executive luxury or overly emphasize performance at the expense of comfort. The 2020 Lexus LC 500, as the brand's flagship coupe, highlights a 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 engine as its core selling point while retaining Lexus's signature luxury features. Many consumers are curious as to whether it can strike a balance between "passion" and "composure." In this test drive, we focused on its dynamic performance and everyday usability to see if this million-ringgit coupe truly meets the demands of the local market.
From a distance, the LC 500’s lines are highly recognizable: the body is low and sleek. With a length of 4770mm combined with a 2870mm wheelbase, the side profile showcases the quintessential GT coupe proportions—short front and rear overhangs, with a waistline that stretches from the fenders all the way to the taillights, featuring an overall clean design without unnecessary adornments. The front face exhibits Lexus’s signature spindle-shaped grille, using a honeycomb design inside, flanked by sharp LED headlights. The L-shaped daytime running lights have high identification once illuminated. The rear features a continuous LED taillight design that echoes the front. The lower section has a dual exhaust layout with chrome finishes, exhibiting understated performance charm. It’s worth noting that the paint finish of the body is exquisite, showcasing distinct layers of gloss under sunlight, aligning with the positioning of a luxury vehicle.
Sitting inside the car, the first impression is the solid material quality: soft leather covers a large portion of the dashboard and inner door panels, while the armrest and seats use semi-aniline leather, offering a soft touch. The center console layout leans towards the driver, featuring a 10.3-inch touchscreen operated via a touch panel. The system operates smoothly and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The instrument panel is fully digital and allows switching between three display modes, corresponding to eco, standard, and sport driving modes, with clear information display. In terms of features, the HUD head-up display, 8-way power-adjustable front seats with memory function, and dual-zone automatic climate control come as standard. The rear row is also equipped with side airbags and headrests, showcasing attention to detail. However, rear space is indeed a shortcoming for coupes—a 175cm tall passenger would have only two fingers’ worth of legroom, and their head would touch the roof, making the back seat more suitable for short trips. Regarding storage, the front cup holders can fit large-sized water bottles, the door panel storage bins can hold two bottles of mineral water, and the trunk offers a capacity of 197 liters, which is enough to fit two carry-on suitcases—sufficient for daily commutes or short trips.
Starting the engine, the sound of the 5.0L V8 naturally aspirated engine is distinctive—it is quiet and stable at low RPMs, but above 3000 RPM it emits a deep roar, without the abruptness of turbocharged engines. It produces a maximum power of 477 PS and a maximum torque of 540 N·m, paired with a 10AT transmission, achieving 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.7 seconds according to official data. During actual driving, the start is smooth in standard mode with a linear throttle response, making it suitable for everyday city commuting. Switching to Sport+ mode, the transmission's shift logic becomes more aggressive, with quicker downshifts. When the accelerator is floored, the push-back sensation lasts until above 6000 RPM, instilling great confidence during overtaking. The steering wheel offers medium resistance, with minimal slack and precise directionality. When cornering, the change in body posture becomes clear. The chassis, featuring a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear independent suspension setup, is tuned to be firm yet resilient. When driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension quickly filters out the jolts without noticeable excess vibration. At high-speed corners, body roll is well-controlled, and the tires provide strong grip, with the 245/40 R21 front and 275/35 R21 rear tires ensuring adequate traction.
In terms of fuel consumption, our actual test results show a fuel consumption of 14.2L per 100km under urban conditions, 9.8L on highways, and a combined fuel consumption of 11.9L, which is close to the official figure of 11.6L. Considering the displacement of the V8 engine, this performance is reasonable. Noise control is done well; at 120km/h on the highway, wind and tire noise are not obvious. The Mark Levinson 13-speaker audio system delivers clear sound quality and deep bass, effectively isolating outside interference. Seat comfort is worth mentioning—the front seats are well-cushioned with adequate lumbar support, making continuous driving for 2 hours fatigue-free.
Overall, the 2020 Lexus LC 500 stands out with its prominent core advantages: the linear power output of its 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 engine, Lexus's consistent luxurious materials and configuration, and the chassis tuning that balances performance and comfort. Compared to competitors like the BMW 8 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, the LC 500 has the upper hand in the uniqueness of its naturally aspirated engine and the richness of its standard features—for example, the Mark Levinson audio system and fully digital instrument panel come as standard, whereas these configurations are often optional in competing models. However, its drawbacks are also evident: cramped rear space and relatively high fuel consumption.
This car is more suitable for two types of users: first, performance enthusiasts who enjoy the sound of a naturally aspirated engine and seek driving pleasure; second, luxury coupe users who need a vehicle that can handle daily commutes and occasional short trips. If you do not frequently need to accommodate rear passengers and value smooth power delivery and luxurious quality, the LC 500 will be a great choice.
All things considered, the 2020 Lexus LC 500 is a "well-balanced" luxury coupe—it doesn’t overly prioritize performance at the expense of comfort, nor does it sacrifice driving pleasure for luxury. In the Malaysian market, these characteristics make it stand out uniquely among its peers.
