The B-segment convertible market in Malaysia has always been a niche but clearly defined segment—consumers want a balance between daily practicality and the fun of open-top driving, while also having decent features. The 2021 MINI Convertible Cooper S targets this pain point: it retains the iconic MINI design DNA while bringing its safety features and smart functionalities to the forefront of its class. During this test drive, I wanted to focus on whether its convertible experience is thrilling enough and if it's too "delicate" for daily commuting.

Starting with the exterior, the classic round headlights and vertical slat grille make it easily recognizable as a MINI, but the Cooper S version features a sportier front bumper, with larger air intakes on both sides. Paired with 17-inch five-spoke wheels, it looks more aggressive than the regular version. The body lines are very compact; its dimensions of 3,876mm in length and 1,727mm in width make it easy to park in the city. When the soft-top is retracted, it folds neatly at the rear, creating a sleek and unbulky silhouette when viewed from the rear at a 45-degree angle. The taillights feature a smoked LED ring design, offering high recognition when lit up at night, and the dual exhaust outlets under the rear bumper enhance the sporty feel.

Opening the door reveals an interior design that continues the retro aesthetic of the exterior. A circular area on top of the dashboard houses an 8.8-inch touchscreen, while physical buttons and knobs are intuitively laid out, requiring almost no learning curve. In terms of materials, most of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented by silver trims, giving it a slightly more refined feel than standard sedans in the same class. The configuration has several highlights: keyless entry, a 5-inch fully digital instrument cluster, a multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a 220V power outlet for the front row, making everyday use very convenient. The seats are manually adjustable; although not as effortless as electric adjustment, the range of adjustment is wide, allowing for a comfortable seating position. The rear space is indeed quite limited, making it a bit cramped for adults, better suited for bags or short trips with children. The trunk has a capacity of 215L, which shrinks slightly when the convertible top is open, but there’s still room for two carry-on suitcases.

In terms of power, the 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum output of 192PS, with peak torque kicking in at just 1,350rpm, paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Throttle response is very sharp at takeoff—just a slight press offers a noticeable push-back experience. With an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.1 seconds, overtaking is effortless in practice. In Sport mode, the gearbox adopts a more aggressive shifting logic, and the paddle shifters provide very clear feedback. For daily use, Comfort mode is more than enough, offering smoother power delivery ideal for urban commutes.

Handling is a strong suit of the MINI. The steering is precise with minimal play, and the body roll is well-controlled during cornering. The suspension tuning leans towards firmness, but it provides sufficient support. On bumpy roads, smaller vibrations are partially filtered out, though larger speed bumps still deliver noticeable feedback. The chassis feels very solid, and the car remains stable at high speeds without the "floaty" sensation often associated with convertibles. As for fuel consumption, the official combined figure is 5.7L/100km. During my week of driving, which mainly consisted of city traffic and occasional open-top outings, the fuel consumption was around 6.5L, which is reasonable for a 2.0T engine.

The convertible experience is the highlight. The soft-top convertible takes only 18 seconds to open and can be operated at speeds below 30km/h. Once retracted, wind noise is controlled better than expected, allowing speeds up to 60km/h with the top down without messing up your hair too much. Small wind deflectors next to the seats can be raised to further reduce wind resistance. In terms of sound insulation, the performance with the top closed is similar to that of a regular sedan. There is some tire noise and engine noise at high speeds, but it is not disruptive. The safety features are also well-equipped, including six airbags, lane departure warning, active braking, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera, making daily driving very reassuring.

Overall, the 2021 MINI Convertible Cooper S has very clear core advantages: it combines MINI's iconic design and driving fun with well-rounded safety features and daily practicality. Compared to other convertibles in the same class, it offers more comprehensive features, stronger performance, and stands out in terms of cost-effectiveness within its niche market. Its target audience is clear—young people who enjoy the fun of a convertible but do not want to sacrifice practicality for daily commuting, or small families who prioritize individuality and safety features. If you're looking for a convertible that can be used for both weekend cruising and daily commuting, this would be a great choice.

Pros
The open-top driving experience is pleasant, and the sunshine or environment during open-top cruising brings a sense of healing and happiness
Strong power performance, the 2.0T turbo torque bursts early with quick acceleration, giving confidence in overtaking
The transmission responds quickly, and the DCT transmission can respond promptly when the accelerator is pressed deeply
Cons
The rear space is cramped, only suitable for children or placing backpacks, not suitable for adults.
On slippery roads during rainy days, reliance on the stability system is necessary, and attention to road conditions is required while driving.

I've been driving the MINI convertible for almost two years, and every time I open the top, it's like flipping the happiness switch! The 2.0T turbo engine is super responsive, giving me confidence to overtake during the morning rush hour. But the back seats can only fit kids, and there's just enough space for a couple of backpacks for grocery shopping. However, the head-turning rate is totally worth it!

Last Wednesday after work, I encountered a heavy rainstorm. Driving this MINI Convertible Cooper S on the mountain roads of Kuala Lumpur was absolutely thrilling. The 2.0T turbo reaches maximum torque at just 1350 rpm. When overtaking, a deep press of the accelerator and the DCT gearbox reacts incredibly quickly, leaving other cars far behind in an instant. However, the roads were slippery in the rain, and the stability control system and lane departure warning system were silently working, providing a great sense of security. The best feature is its brakes: front ventilated discs and rear ventilated discs stop the car steadily during emergency braking without feeling soft at all. Although it's a convertible, the safety configurations are solid, with six airbags and active braking systems, making it reliable even when taking my wife and kids out. The only downside is the small rear seat space, but it's perfect for two people driving around.

Driving with the convertible top down is awesome! The 1.5T engine responds instantly to every push, and it maneuvers narrow alleyways even more nimbly than a motorcycle~
