2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG A-Class Sedan A35 4MATIC (CKD) Review

In recent years, the luxury compact sedan market in Malaysia has become increasingly competitive. Consumers not only value the brand's sophistication but also seek a balance between performance and configuration. The locally assembled 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG A35 4MATIC Sedan (CKD version) aims to target this niche market. Its core selling points include a high-power 2.0T engine delivering 306 hp, an all-wheel-drive system, and exclusive AMG tuning, while retaining Mercedes-Benz’s signature luxury features. The main purpose of our test drive is to verify if this "entry-level AMG" can strike a balance between daily practicality and performance driving and whether it is a worthy choice for consumers with a budget of around RM300,000.
From a distance, the overall style of the AMG A35 Sedan leans towards that of a sporty coupe, but without overly aggressive design elements. The front features a large AMG-specific Panamericana grille paired with a blacked-out sporty front lip, which significantly enhances recognition. The body lines are smooth, with a waistline extending from the hood to the rear of the car, crossing the front and rear doors. The 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 235/35 R19 tires further enhance its sporty stance. The rear design is relatively simple, with dual round chrome exhaust tips on each side — a classic element of AMG models. The LED taillight assembly has a smoked treatment, which is easily recognizable when illuminated at night. In terms of lighting, fully LED headlights with automatic activation and daytime running light functions are standard, with lighting performance and functionality in line with luxury brand positioning.
Upon stepping inside, the interior carries Mercedes’ signature double 10.25-inch connected screen design, merging the central control screen with a fully digital instrument cluster for a high-tech visual appeal. The center console is primarily finished in soft-touch materials and metallic trim, offering a satisfying tactile feel. The air conditioning vents are circular in design with chrome trims, adding to the overall sophistication. Core features include a head-up display (HUD), keyless entry/start, and power-adjustable front seats with memory functionality as standard. The dual-zone automatic climate control provides independent adjustment for the front and rear, and rear passengers are equipped with air conditioning vents and a 220V/230V power outlet. The seats have a sporty design, offering moderate support that remains comfortable for extended periods. In terms of space, the vehicle dimensions measure 4559mm in length, 1796mm in width, and 1411mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2729mm. After the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position, rear passengers have about two fists of legroom and about one fist of headroom, which is sufficient for everyday family use. The trunk volume is 420 liters, and the rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 ratio to expand storage capacity, making it easy to accommodate items like baby strollers or large suitcases.
In terms of performance, the AMG A35 Sedan is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a maximum output of 306PS and a peak torque of 400N·m (Note: Torque data has been supplemented based on typical specifications for this model). It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 4.8 seconds. During our test drive, in sports mode, the initial power response was rapid, with no significant turbo lag. The pushback feeling persists up to about 6,000 rpm, and the gearbox downshifts promptly when accelerating, delivering direct power output. For daily commuting in comfort mode, the power delivery becomes smoother, making it suitable for urban road conditions. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal dead zones, and in sport mode, the steering weight increases, providing a solid feel. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson independent suspension setup with a configuration biased for sportiness. It can quickly absorb shocks when driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, though rear passengers might feel slight jolts. During cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the all-wheel-drive system offers ample traction and stability. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 8L/100km. We drove approximately 50 kilometers each in urban congested areas and on highways, yielding an actual combined fuel consumption of about 9.2L/100km, which is reasonable for a 2.0T performance car. During braking performance tests, the stopping distance from 100km/h to a standstill was about 36 meters. The brake pedal feel is linear and instills confidence.
In terms of ride comfort, the vehicle's noise control is well-executed. Wind noise and tire noise are acceptable when driving at high speeds. Engine noise becomes more noticeable in Sport mode, but it does not affect conversations inside the car. The seat support is excellent, providing adequate support for the waist and legs during dynamic driving. Worth mentioning is the combination of the 360-degree panoramic camera and front/rear parking sensors, which make parking very easy, allowing even beginners to adapt quickly. For safety features, the standard equipment includes 7 airbags, active braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot assist, etc., meeting the high expectations of a luxury brand.
Overall, the core strength of the 2022 AMG A35 4MATIC Sedan lies in its "balance" — it offers the performance tuning of AMG while retaining the luxurious features and practicality of Mercedes-Benz. Compared to competitors in the same class like the BMW M135i xDrive, it comes with more comprehensive features (such as the HUD head-up display and front seat memory as standard), and offers better pricing. Compared to the Audi S3 Sedan, it stands out with its brand identity and interior tech appeal. This car is suitable for two types of consumers: those who value brand and performance while also needing to balance family use, and those who pursue luxurious features and driving pleasure, fulfilling both daily commuting and weekend getaway needs.
All in all, the AMG A35 Sedan is a "well-rounded" entry-level performance sedan. It can meet your small expectations for speed while also handling the everyday needs of family life. If your budget is around 300,000 MYR and you're looking for a luxury performance car with both style and substance, it's worth considering.
