2022 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class S 580 4Matic Review

In the luxury sedan segment, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class has always been synonymous with ultimate comfort and a symbol of status. The 2022 Maybach S 580 4Matic, as the flagship model of this series, not only continues the luxury DNA of the brand but also incorporates a mild hybrid system to improve efficiency. Additionally, it has undergone deep optimizations to enhance the experience for rear-seat passengers. In this real-world test drive, we focus on verifying whether its sense of luxury lives up to its reputation, how the hybrid system actually performs, and whether its daily comfort can meet the needs of top-tier users.
At first glance, seeing the 2022 Maybach S 580 4Matic, you immediately sense its distinction from the standard S-Class. With a body length of 5469mm and a wheelbase of 3396mm, it is longer than the long-wheelbase S-Class. The side profile is sleek yet dignified, and the Maybach emblem on the C-pillar along with the 21-inch multi-spoke wheels further enhance its recognition. The front face features a vertical-bar chrome-plated grille and the iconic three-pointed star hood ornament, exuding a commanding presence. The rear showcases dual chrome exhaust outlets and continuous LED taillights, offering a balance of robustness and refinement. The lighting system is fully equipped with LEDs, including automatic headlights and daytime running lights as standard, which, when illuminated, not only provide ample brightness but also display a Maybach-exclusive welcome animation, adding a sense of ceremony.
Sitting inside, you are immediately surrounded by extensive Nappa leather and wood grain panels, offering a refined touch without any irritating odors. The center console is centered around a 12.8-inch touch screen, with high interface fluency; common functions like air conditioning and navigation are easy to locate. Physical buttons are retained for some controls below, allowing for convenient blind operation. The front seats support electric adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The headrests are adorned with Maybach's signature pillow headrests, ensuring that long drives won't tire you out. The real highlight, however, is the rear: the right seat is equipped with an electric Ottoman leg rest and massage functions, while the left-side passenger seat also has an electric leg rest and allows adjustment of the front passenger seat via the rear LCD screen—it's entirely equipped with "executive seating" features. The rear independent air conditioning is equipped with an Air Balance fragrance system and ionizer, and the 15 speakers of the Burmester 3D sound system turn the car's interior into a private moving cinema.
In terms of space, the 3396mm wheelbase advantage is fully utilized. A passenger of 180cm sitting in the rear has over two fistfuls of legroom and an additional fistful of headroom. When the right seat is adjusted to "reclining" mode, the legs can be fully extended, making it even suitable for a comfortable nap. Storage capacity may not be its main selling point, but with a 470L trunk space, it can fit two 28-inch suitcases, sufficient for everyday use. The interior is also equipped with a 220V power outlet and multiple USB ports, making it convenient for rear passengers to work or charge devices.
For the powertrain, the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine combined with a 20PS electric motor in the mild hybrid system delivers a total output of 503PS and 700N·m torque (including electric motor assistance). The official 0-100km/h acceleration is 4.8 seconds. When driving, the electric motor compensates for turbo lag during startup, making throttle response very linear. During mid-to-high-range acceleration and overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply provides a continuous power surge, which makes it hard to believe this is a 2.3-ton car. The 9-speed automatic transmission shifts so smoothly that it's almost imperceptible, with no jolts even during rapid acceleration.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel feels light yet precise, making low-speed maneuvers effortless while remaining stable at high speeds. The chassis features front and rear multi-link independent suspension paired with air suspension (even though it’s not listed in the configuration sheet, it’s evident from the actual experience). When crossing speed bumps or uneven roads, vibrations are very well absorbed, and the rear passengers can barely feel any jolts. While navigating corners, body roll is better controlled than expected, without the “boat-like” swaying sensation. The all-wheel-drive system performs stably on rainy or slippery roads, with no wheelspin during start or acceleration.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel efficiency is 11.7L/100km. During our actual test drive, urban conditions yielded about 13-14L, while on highways, it dropped to 9-10L. Considering its engine displacement and weight, this performance is reasonable. Noise control is a highlight. At a speed of 120km/h, only minor wind noise is audible inside the cabin, with tire and engine noise almost completely insulated. Even with the Burmester audio system at a low volume, it can easily overcome the ambient noise.
In daily use, the most comfortable feature is the rear seats. The ventilation and massage functions of the seats are especially practical in Malaysia’s hot weather, and the fragrance system keeps the car’s air fresh. The fragrance system keeps the car’s air fresh. The mild hybrid system’s start-stop is very smooth and almost imperceptible, ensuring a comfortable riding experience.
In summary, the 2022 Maybach S 580 4Matic’s core strengths are evident: the rear “executive seats” provide a top-tier experience within its class, the power is strong yet smooth, and its noise insulation and chassis comfort are impeccable. The configurations are also maxed out. Compared to its competitors like the BMW 7 Series or the Audi A8L, its rear-seat luxury and brand premium are more prominent. Although the price of RM 1,928,816 isn’t cheap, for users pursuing ultimate comfort and a status symbol, it actually offers great value for money.
This car is most suitable for two types of individuals: firstly, business owners who frequently host clients for business occasions—its luxurious rear-seat configurations provide the best experience for their clients. Secondly, high-net-worth individuals who prioritize family travel comfort—the rear seats let family members enjoy a “mobile sofa” experience. If you’re looking for a luxury sedan that can both stand out and meet daily comfort needs, it’s undoubtedly a top choice.
Overall, the 2022 Maybach S 580 4Matic has no obvious shortcomings. It is a car that pushes “luxury” and “comfort” to the extreme and is fully worthy of the Maybach emblem.
