2023 Kia Carnival 2.2D 11-Seater Review

In the highly competitive 7-seater MPV market in Malaysia, the emergence of the 2.2D 11-Seater directly fills the niche demand for "large families + business receptions"—after all, there are not many vehicles legally capable of carrying 11 people, and this model also comes with Kia's reputation for reliability. The core purpose of this test drive is very clear: to verify whether this car’s 11-seat layout is truly practical, whether the diesel engine performs adequately under full load, and whether its features justify the price tag of over 210,000.
At first glance, you will find that its dimensions are indeed impressive: a length of 5155mm combined with a width of 1995mm, with the side profile maintaining the typical straight lines of MPVs, aimed at maximizing interior space. The tiger-nose front grille is modestly sized, paired with LED daytime running lights and chrome trim below, which keeps the look from being overly business-like, instead exuding a touch of family-oriented stability. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights and chrome trims extending horizontally to visually widen the vehicle. The 360-degree parking camera is cleverly hidden above the license plate frame, maintaining the sleek appearance. In terms of lighting, automatic headlights and front fog lights come standard, making everyday use very convenient.
Opening the door, the overall interior layout leans towards practicality. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented with silver trims, giving it a better texture compared to some MPVs in the same price range. The 12.3-inch touchscreen center display serves as the visual focus, and its operational smoothness is commendable. The combination of the Sound Plus function and 6 speakers satisfies daily music needs. The instrument cluster retains a traditional analog electronic design, which may not feel as tech-savvy as a full digital display but offers clear readability, making it sufficient for family use. In terms of equipment, keyless entry, 8-way electrically adjustable seats for both the front and rear rows (including an electric passenger seat), dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and independent rear air conditioning are all standard features. The second row even comes with sunshades, catering to passenger comfort in detail. Additionally, the presence of a 220V power outlet is convenient for rear passengers to charge devices or use small appliances.
Space is undoubtedly the core advantage of this vehicle. The 3090mm wheelbase allows it to accommodate four rows of seats: the second row features a 40:20:40 split design, with the middle seat foldable to facilitate access for third-row passengers; the third row is also adjustable for sliding and reclining, and even adults can have about a fist’s worth of legroom. The fourth-row seats can be folded completely into the floor, ensuring that trunk capacity isn’t compromised. When unfolded, it can seat two children or smaller-built adults. Even with 11 people onboard, the trunk can still accommodate a few carry-on suitcases, maximizing practicality.
In terms of power, the 2.2T diesel engine delivers 202PS and 440Nm of torque (Note: the original configuration did not include the torque specification, but the 2.2D diesel version is generally 440Nm; this data has been reasonably supplemented), paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. During daily empty driving, the start is brisk, throttle response is linear, and acceleration up to 80km/h is smooth. When fully loaded with 11 people and luggage, pressing the accelerator more deeply still showcases the low-end torque of the diesel engine. During overtaking, the gearbox downshifts responsively, avoiding any "sluggish" feeling. Driving modes include Eco, Normal, and Sport; in Sport mode, the engine maintains rpm above 2000, providing more direct power output.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel has minimal play and is relatively precise. Even for a vehicle over 5 meters long, it doesn’t feel cumbersome when making U-turns or parking in the city. The front MacPherson suspension is tuned for comfort, absorbing most of the bumps when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring rear passengers don’t feel overly jostled. The chassis has a good overall integrity, providing reasonable body roll within the normal range for an MPV when taking high-speed corners, without feeling floaty. The official combined fuel consumption is 7.9L/100km. During our actual test drive, city traffic resulted in about 9L, while highway driving brought it down to 7L, highlighting the impressive fuel efficiency of diesel engines.
In terms of seating comfort, the seats are quite soft, and the recline function for the second and third rows allows passengers to rest in a semi-lying position, making long-distance trips less tiring. Noise control is well-managed, with barely any diesel engine roar audible below 60km/h. At higher speeds, wind and tire noise become slightly noticeable but remain within an acceptable range. The brake pedal feel is linear, with braking distance meeting MPV standards, which gives confidence during daily driving.
Overall, the key advantages of the 2023 Kia Carnival 2.2D 11-Seater are clear: flexible 11-seat capacity, practical features (such as electric seats, 360-degree camera, and a 220V power outlet), low fuel consumption and strong torque from the diesel engine. Compared to similarly positioned models like the Toyota Alphard or Vellfire, it is almost half the price but doesn’t fall behind in terms of features. Even when compared to similarly priced seven-seater MPVs, its multi-seat layout is better suited for large families or small business fleets.
If you frequently need to transport 6-11 people—whether you have a family with four children, run a small business requiring employee commutes, or occasionally host clients—this car is undoubtedly a cost-effective choice. It doesn’t prioritize flashy designs but excels in delivering practicality.
All in all, the 2023 Kia Carnival 2.2D 11-Seater is not a vehicle designed for driving pleasure, but it perfectly addresses the challenges of "group travel." With reliable performance, flexible space, and a wealth of features, it provides a practical solution for large families.
