2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG A-Class A35 4Matic Sedan Review

In Malaysia's current C-segment sedan market, entry-level models of luxury brands are attracting increasing attention from young consumers—they want brand sophistication without compromising daily practicality, and enough driving pleasure. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG A-Class A35 4Matic Sedan aims to meet this demand, featuring a 306hp 2.0T engine, an all-wheel-drive system, and AMG-exclusive tuning as its core selling points, while retaining Mercedes-Benz's luxurious configuration. In this test drive, we focus on evaluating whether it can balance "performance" and "daily usability" in urban commuting, highway cruising, and occasional mountain road driving.
From the exterior, the A35 Sedan continues the sporty style of the AMG family without being overly ostentatious. The front face adopts a large-size single-louver AMG Panamericana grille, complemented by sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognition; the sporty bumper and side skirt lines below enhance the low-profile stance, while the 19-inch multi-spoke wheels further boost the sporty feel. The flowing body side lines run from the front to the rear, making the body appear sleeker; the AMG rear spoiler and dual round exhaust outlets on each side are direct signs of its performance identity. The LED taillight cluster also has considerable recognition when illuminated at night. The overall design aligns with Mercedes-Benz's luxurious positioning while highlighting AMG’s performance DNA in its details.
Sitting inside, the familiar Mercedes-Benz dual 10.25-inch wide-screen display dominates the central control position. The instrument cluster provides clear visuals and supports multiple themes, while the central screen supports both touch input and steering wheel button controls, responding smoothly. The interior materials are mainly made of soft-touch surfaces and leather, paired with metal trim, maintaining a sense of luxury; the multifunctional steering wheel features an AMG-specific logo and offers a solid grip. The HUD head-up display clearly projects information like speed and navigation, reducing distractions while driving. In terms of configuration, the front seats support electric adjustment and provide good cushioning, ensuring comfort during long rides; the rear seats are also electrically adjustable. Although legroom is limited due to the 2729mm wheelbase (a passenger of about 175cm has approximately two fist widths of knee space), it is sufficient for daily family use. Regarding storage, the door bins and central armrest box offer decent capacity, while the 405L trunk can fit two 28-inch suitcases, proving its practicality. Additionally, both the front and rear rows are equipped with air conditioning vents, and the rear row also has a 220V/230V power outlet, reflecting thoughtful attention to detail.
In terms of performance, the A35 Sedan is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum output of 306PS and a peak torque of 400Nm. It is paired with a 7-speed DCT transmission and a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 4.8 seconds. During actual driving, switching to Sport mode provides sensitive throttle response at startup, with a noticeable push-back feeling, and sufficient reserves for mid-to-high-speed acceleration. Overtaking only requires a firm press on the accelerator, and the transmission can quickly downshift, delivering direct power output. In standard mode, the power delivery becomes smoother, making it suitable for daily urban commuting. The chassis uses a front MacPherson independent suspension, with a relatively stiff tuning, but its ability to absorb bumps is commendable. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the body does not exhibit excessive vibration. The steering is precise with minimal play. When cornering on mountain roads, the body's posture remains stable, and the all-wheel-drive system provides ample traction, instilling confidence in the driver.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.4L/100km. In our test with half the time spent in urban traffic and the other half on the highway, the actual fuel consumption was about 8.2L/100km. For a performance car, this is still a reasonable performance. The braking system adopts front and rear ventilated discs, with quick brake response and linear pedal feel. The car remains stable during emergency braking. Regarding noise control, wind noise and tire noise are not very noticeable during high-speed driving. In sports mode, engine noise slightly enters the cabin but does not affect comfort. In addition, the range of adjustment for the electric seats is wide, allowing for a comfortable driving position to be found, and the seat support is excellent, reducing fatigue during long trips.
In terms of safety features, the A35 Sedan is equipped with 6 airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, as well as front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. The automatic parking feature is also very practical, making it friendly for beginners. These features are at a mainstream level among models in the same class, providing sufficient safety assurance for drivers.
Overall, the core strength of the 2023 AMG A35 4Matic Sedan lies in its "balance" — it offers AMG-level performance for occasional driving pleasure while retaining Mercedes-Benz's luxury features and practicality, making it suitable for daily commuting and family use. Compared to competitors like the BMW M135i in the same segment, the A35 Sedan offers more comprehensive features, such as rear electric seats and a 220V power outlet, which provide a greater sense of luxury. As for pricing, the RM 354,000 price tag falls into a reasonable range for entry-level performance models from luxury brands.
This car is suitable for two types of people: young individuals who value the brand and driving enjoyment—they want AMG performance but also need a car usable for daily driving; and consumers who need to balance family use—its space and features meet household needs while occasional performance boosts can bring exciting surprises. Overall, the A35 Sedan is a "well-rounded" luxury performance sedan that fulfills brand aspirations while balancing practicality and driving pleasure.
