In Malaysia's family MPV market, E-segment models have always been the core choice for multi-child families or business users – needing to accommodate the space requirements for 7-8 people while also considering the convenience of daily driving and quality configurations. The 2024 Kia Carnival 2.2T Diesel 8-Seater High, as a popular player in this segment, not only retains its spacious advantage after its upgrade but also enhances smart features and driver assistance systems. With an official combined fuel consumption of 6.5L/100km, it is quite attractive. For this test drive, our main goal is to verify its practicality in daily family use, the smoothness of its diesel engine, and whether the high-spec version truly offers value for money.

In terms of appearance, the Carnival maintains the grandeur of E-segment MPVs, with a 5155mm length paired with a width of 1995mm, providing a visual impression of stability without appearing bulky. The front fascia features Kia's signature tiger-nose grille with a black mesh design inside, complemented by sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognition; the lower front bumper is adorned with chrome trim and equipped with front radar, combining practicality with aesthetics. The side profile is simple and sleek, with 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and 235/55 R19 tire specifications that create a harmonious proportion; the chrome side steps facilitate passenger entry and exit, especially for elders and children in the second and third rows. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a through-type design, creating a striking visual effect when illuminated; silver skid plates have been added to the lower rear bumper, adding a touch of crossover flair, and the rear is also equipped with parking sensors and a 360-degree parking camera system, providing a clear view of the surroundings during reversing.

Entering the cabin, the interior style leans towards a warm, family-friendly vibe while maintaining a sense of sophistication. The dashboard adopts a symmetrical design, with soft plastic material covering the top providing a pleasant tactile experience; the center features a 12.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display, which has high resolution, operates smoothly, and supports Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. The steering wheel is multifunctional with leather wrapping, providing a comfortable grip; the left buttons control multimedia and phone functions, while the right ones manage the driver assistance systems. Paddle shifters are also included, enhancing the driving experience. The instrument panel is a digital simulation display with clear visibility, displaying real-time information such as speed, RPM, and fuel levels. Regarding configurations, the front seats support 8-way power adjustment with heating and ventilation functions, and the driver seat is equipped with a memory feature to save individual seating preferences. The second-row seats feature a 40:20:40 split design with sliding, reclining, and removable options, while the third row is a 60:40 split-folding seat, allowing flexible adjustment to meet various cargo needs. The cabin is equipped with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and the rear seats also have independent air vents. The front central armrest box features 220V/230V power outlets, making it convenient to charge laptops or other devices. Keyless entry and ignition systems, electric parking brakes, and other features come standard, making daily usage highly convenient.

Space performance is one of Carnival's core advantages. The 3090mm wheelbase provides ample interior seating space. A passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the front row, after adjusting the posture, has a headroom space of one fist and two fingers and plenty of legroom; when the second-row seat is adjusted to the rearmost position, the legroom can exceed two fists, and the headroom is also one fist, ensuring no feeling of oppression even during long rides; for a 175cm passenger in the third row, the headroom is one fist, and the legroom is four fingers when the second-row seat is moderately positioned, which, although not as spacious as the first two rows, is completely comfortable for short trips. In terms of storage space, the front central armrest box has a large capacity and can hold many small items; the door panel storage slots can also accommodate water bottles and umbrellas; the sides of the second-row seats have cupholders, while the third-row seats are also equipped with cupholders and storage compartments. The trunk's standard capacity is average, but when the third-row seats are fully folded, the volume increases significantly, even allowing for the placement of large suitcases or strollers, meeting the cargo needs for long family trips.

In terms of power, it is equipped with a 2.2T turbocharged diesel engine with a maximum horsepower of 199PS, a maximum power of 146kW, and a maximum torque of 440N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the throttle response is smooth, especially in the low rpm range, where the maximum torque of 440N·m provides ample power output, making starts and accelerations very quick; during medium to high-speed overtaking, flooring the throttle prompts the transmission to downshift promptly, ensuring smooth power connection and no noticeable lag. The 8-speed automatic transmission has a clear shifting logic, and both upshifting and downshifting are very smooth, with hardly any sense of jerkiness. There are three driving modes to choose from: Eco, Normal, and Sport. In Eco mode, the throttle response is slightly slower, making it suitable for daily commutes and effectively reducing fuel consumption; in Sport mode, the throttle response is more sensitive, and the shifting rpms are higher, fitting for scenarios requiring rapid acceleration.

Regarding handling and chassis performance, the front MacPherson independent suspension paired with the rear multi-link independent suspension is generally tuned for comfort. On urban roads, when dealing with speed bumps or slight uneven surfaces, the suspension performs well in filtering vibrations, and passengers inside the vehicle won’t feel significant jolts; on highways, the chassis stability is good, even at speeds exceeding 120km/h, the car body does not feel floaty. The steering wheel has moderate steering effort and precise direction with no significant play, making daily driving effortless; when cornering, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range, not appearing clumsy despite the large body size. As for braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes provide sufficient braking force, the brake pedal has a linear feel, and the braking distance is moderate, providing adequate confidence.

Fuel economy is an advantage of diesel models, with an official combined fuel consumption of 6.5L/100km. In our test drive, mostly on urban roads, including congested sections during morning and evening peaks, the actual measured fuel consumption was about 7.2L/100km; during highway driving, the fuel consumption was about 5.8L/100km. Overall, the performance met expectations. With a fuel tank capacity of 72L, the full fuel range can reach around 1000km, reducing the hassle of frequent refueling.

In terms of ride comfort, Carnival performs admirably. The sound insulation is good, with wind and road noise kept at low levels during high-speed driving. The diesel engine noise is also not noticeable inside the cabin, only transmitting a slight characteristic diesel engine sound during rapid acceleration, but it does not affect the riding experience. The front seats' heating and ventilation features are practical for different seasons, while the seat padding is soft yet supportive, ensuring that long drives won't cause fatigue. The backrest angle of the second-row seats can be adjusted, providing excellent riding comfort. As for regenerative braking, this fuel-powered vehicle does not have this feature, but the smoothness of the 8-speed automatic transmission compensates for it, making daily driving quite comfortable.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 Kia Carnival 2.2T Diesel 8-Seater High are clear: the 3090mm wheelbase offers an exceptionally large space that can meet the everyday travel needs of an eight-person family; the 2.2T diesel engine delivers smooth power and outstanding fuel efficiency, making it suitable for long-distance driving. The high-spec version offers heated and ventilated seats, a 12.3-inch central control screen, a 360-degree parking camera, and Level-2 driver assistance systems (lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, etc.), which are highly competitive in its class. Compared with the Toyota Alphard in the same segment, Carnival is more affordable and more feature-rich; compared with the Honda Odyssey, its diesel engine's fuel efficiency offers a significant advantage, and the space is also larger.

This car is very suitable for family users who value space practicality, fuel efficiency, and high configuration. It is particularly ideal for families with elderly or small children who frequently travel with a larger group. At the same time, its business-oriented attributes are decent, making it capable of accommodating occasional client receptions. If you are looking for a spacious, smooth-powered, well-equipped, and fuel-efficient E-segment MPV, the Carnival 2.2T Diesel 8-Seater High is worth considering.

In conclusion, the 2024 Kia Carnival 2.2T Diesel 8-Seater High is a well-balanced family MPV. Its space, powertrain, features, and fuel consumption perform well, and the 5-year/100,000km comprehensive warranty provides additional peace of mind for consumers. This is not a model that seeks extreme performance, but for the core needs of daily family use, it delivers satisfying answers.

The diesel version of Carnival truly understands Malaysian families! It doesn't feel sluggish when starting in traffic jams, and overtaking at high speeds is stable; fully loaded with 8 seats doesn't feel cramped, and the second row can be removed for cargo. However, the body is too wide, so you need to be extra cautious on narrow roads, but the fuel consumption at 6.5L is more economical than expected.

Last Saturday, I took the whole family to Genting. When climbing hills, the 2.2T diesel engine with 440 Nm of torque provided plenty of confidence. The 8AT transmission shifted smoothly, and overtaking was not sluggish. During heavy rain, the rain-sensing wipers activated automatically, and the lane departure warning provided timely reminders. However, there are only 7 airbags, lacking rear side airbags, so I deducted 1 point for that. The exterior is grand but not stunning, just 4 points. Overall, this MPV is very reliable for family use at a price of just over 240,000.

Took the whole family to Genting Highlands last weekend. The 440Nm torque of the diesel turbo was indeed powerful during hill climbs, and the 8-speed automatic transmission shifted smoothly without lag. However, on rainy mountain roads during cornering, the 235 tires felt a bit slippery, but the ESP intervention was timely enough to stabilize the car—it's fair to give a 5-star rating for safety. The exterior design is impressive, but the 19-inch wheels tend to accumulate mud, so the car needs washing every time after descending the hill. The fuel consumption is higher than the official 6.5 liters per 100km, reaching over 8 liters in congested urban areas, but the 72L fuel tank provides decent cruising range. The third-row seating is adequate, but there are no air conditioning vents for the third row, which led to complaints from the elderly and children about feeling hot—this point deserves criticism.
