2025 MINI Convertible Cooper Review

In Malaysia's B-segment car market, models that balance individuality and practicality have always been the focus of young families and urban white-collar workers. However, the convertible segment often has to find a balance between design, performance, and daily usability. As a popular contender in this segment, the 2025 MINI Convertible Cooper is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine and a 7-speed automatic transmission while retaining its classic convertible design and abundant intelligent features. Can it meet consumers' dual expectations for "fun-to-drive" and "practicality"? We explore the true capabilities of this car through a static review and dynamic test drive.
In terms of appearance, the 2025 MINI Convertible Cooper continues the brand's iconic rounded contours. The vehicle’s dimensions are 3879mm×1744mm×1431mm, with a wheelbase of 2495mm, and its compact body makes it more agile in urban environments. At the front, the circular LED headlights paired with the vertical slat grille ensure high recognition. The double waistline design on the sides extends from the front to the rear, combined with the 18-inch wheels to add a sporty touch. The horizontally arranged LED taillights at the rear have a smoked finish, complementing the diffuser-style rear bumper. The overall design retains MINI's classic elements while incorporating modern details.
Inside the car, the circular OLED display on the center console is particularly eye-catching, serving as the core interactive area for the interior. It is equipped with MINI's latest intelligent system, demonstrating smooth operation and responsive performance. The cabin materials mainly consist of soft-touch plastics and leather, with leather wrapping on the armrest console and inner door panels, offering a tactile sense of quality. The front seats support electric adjustment, with moderate backrest and cushion support ensuring long drives are less tiring. The rear seats feature a 60:40 split-fold design; although the legroom in the rear may feel a bit cramped for passengers over 175cm tall, it suffices for short trips. Regarding storage space, the front door panels can hold two water bottles, and the storage compartment below the center console can store phones and keys. The trunk has a capacity of 160L, which is enough to store backpacks or small suitcases, and folding down the rear seats provides additional space.
In terms of performance, this car is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 204PS and a peak torque of 300N·m, paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Upon starting, the throttle response is brisk, and the maximum torque is achieved at 1450rpm, providing ample low-end torque that makes urban starts or overtaking easy without requiring heavy throttle input. When switched to sport mode, the transmission's shift logic becomes more aggressive, with faster downshifts and engine revs maintained above 3000rpm, delivering noticeable acceleration and pushback. During daily driving, the transmission displays good smoothness, with hardly any perceivable shift shocks. The suspension system features a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent setup, tuned towards sportiness. Body roll is well controlled during cornering, and the steering is precise with minimal slack, offering an enjoyable driving experience. However, when going over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension tends to feel slightly harsh, and rear passengers might experience some minor bumps.
Regarding fuel consumption, we conducted tests in both urban congested roads and highway sections. The combined fuel consumption was approximately 7.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 6.6L/100km. However, considering the power output of the 2.0T engine, this fuel consumption is within a reasonable range. As for braking performance, the combination of front ventilated discs and rear solid discs provides a linear braking feel. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable, and the braking distance is in line with the standards of vehicles in the same class.
In terms of driving comfort, the vehicle's sound insulation is commendable. Wind and tire noise are kept within an acceptable range during high-speed driving, ensuring they do not interfere with conversations inside the car. The seats offer good support, and the lumbar support can be adjusted electrically, making it suitable for drivers of different body types. The active safety features are abundant, including lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking, providing ample safety assurance for daily driving.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2025 MINI Convertible Cooper lie in its performance, classic design, and comprehensive features. Compared to the same-class Volkswagen Golf Convertible, it has better power specifications and more advanced smart features. Compared to the BMW 2 Series Convertible, it offers better value for money. This car is suitable for young consumers who pursue individuality and driving pleasure, while also meeting the daily travel needs of small families. If you're looking for a convertible that stands out and balances practicality, the MINI Convertible Cooper is worth considering.
