Specs

In recent years, the luxury coupe market in Malaysia has become more stable, but consumer demand for a balance of "performance, configuration, and luxury" remains strong. As a next-generation model, the 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe 430i M Sport not only continues the sporty genes of the 4 Series but has also been comprehensively upgraded in design, configuration, and power, directly targeting mid-to-high-end users seeking driving pleasure and daily practicality. This time, we got a test drive vehicle, and our primary goal is to verify whether its upgrades genuinely enhance the product's strength and to identify its advantages compared to the old model and its competitors in the same segment.

From an exterior perspective, the most noticeable change in the 2021 430i M Sport is its size— the car's length has increased to 4768mm, and the wheelbase has been extended to 2851mm, making it significantly larger than the 2019 model and offering sleeker body lines. The front features a significantly enlarged "kidney" grille, complemented by the M Sport-specific front bumper, giving it a sportier feel than the previous model. The LED headlight design is sharp, with standard daytime running lights and automatic headlights, offering high recognizability when illuminated. Along the side, the coupe retains a sleek silhouette with flowing lines, and the 19-inch dual-tone wheels (front 225/40 R19, rear 255/35 R19) further enhance its sporty stance. At the rear, the LED taillights feature a smoked design, paired with a dual exhaust outlet layout, giving the overall style a youthful and aggressive look.

Sitting inside, the interior's luxury and technological feel have been noticeably improved compared to the previous model. The layout of the center console is driver-focused, with most physical buttons retained but arranged more systematically. In terms of materials, a large area is wrapped in soft leather, paired with metal trims, providing a solid tactile experience. Key features include a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster (BMW Live Cockpit Professional) and a 10.25-inch touchscreen central control display, which boasts high resolution and smooth operation. The Harman Kardon 16-speaker audio system delivers clear sound quality, a significant upgrade from the 9-speaker system in the 2019 430i M Sport. The seats are M Sport sports seats, with front-row seats that support electric adjustments, offering good support and comfort even for long drives. Although it is a two-door model, the extended wheelbase provides backseat passengers with a legroom distance of about one fist for a 175cm tall individual. While the headroom is slightly tight, it's still adequate. The rear seats come with standard air conditioning vents and power outlets, offering reasonable practicality. The trunk capacity is 440L, which is 5L smaller than the 2019 version, but the rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration, making it more flexible for carrying large items.

In terms of performance, the 2021 430i M Sport is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, providing a maximum horsepower of 258PS (10PS more than the 2019 430i M Sport) and a maximum torque output range of 1550-4400rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the car responds swiftly at start, with sufficient low-end torque, making city driving or accelerating from a stop easy. When switched to Sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases, and acceleration feels more linear. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.8 seconds, which is nearly the same as the old model, but the power reserves for daily driving feel more ample. For handling, the front double-wishbone suspension (an upgrade from the MacPherson in the previous model) provides more precise steering, with minimal play in the steering wheel, and the body roll is well-controlled during cornering. The rear multi-link suspension handles bumpy roads well, filtering out most minor vibrations while retaining some road feel, balancing sportiness with comfort. In terms of fuel consumption, we drove 100km each in the city and on the highway, achieving an average fuel consumption of about 7.2L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official rating of 6.6L/100km. However, considering the frequency of using Sport mode, this result is still reasonable.

The details of ride comfort are well handled, and the interior noise control is excellent. At high speeds of 120km/h, wind noise and tire noise are not obvious. The engine start-stop technology is smooth, without abrupt vibrations. The electric parking brake and hill-start assist functions are very convenient in daily use, and the automatic parking system can accurately recognize parking spaces, which is friendly to beginners. However, the two-door design does affect the convenience of access to the rear seats. Passengers in the front need to move their seats forward to get in and out, which is a common drawback of coupe models.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe 430i M Sport are very apparent: sportier appearance, a more technologically advanced interior, richer configurations (especially the sound system and display), with power and handling maintaining BMW's consistent standards. Compared with the 2019 430i M Sport, its price has only increased by 3000RM, but it has been upgraded with a full LCD instrument panel, a larger central control screen, and a better sound system, offering better value for money. Compared to similarly positioned competitors like the Audi A5 Coupe or Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, its handling performance stands out, and its features are more well-rounded.

This car is suitable for two types of people: first, young individuals who pursue driving pleasure, enjoy the styling of a two-door coupe, and also need practicality for daily commuting; second, families that value luxury and configurations. Although it's a two-door model, the rear seats are sufficient for occasional passengers, making it suitable for short weekend trips or family shopping. Overall, the 2021 430i M Sport is a "well-rounded" luxury two-door coupe that satisfies the desire for driving fun while retaining daily practicality, making it a worthy choice in this segment.

Been driving the 430i M Sport for over two years, splitting lanes and overtaking during the morning rush hour with no fear, the rear-wheel drive makes cornering super smooth. The back seats can fit two buddies without feeling cramped, and the Harman Kardon sound system hits hard. Only downside is the 19-inch tires make speed bumps tricky, but with 6.6L fuel consumption and efficient highway performance, totally worth the price!

Previously, I drove a Japanese family car, but I switched to the 430i M Sport purely for the coupe vibe—sleek fastback design paired with 19-inch wheels, it turns heads all over the streets of Kuala Lumpur, the exterior gets a solid 5 points, no complaints! Performance-wise, 4 points: 2.0T + rear-wheel drive, switching to Sport mode during morning rush hour for overtaking is ridiculously smooth, and it’s stable when overtaking on the North-South Expressway on weekends. However, acceleration beyond 120 km/h on the highway isn’t as aggressive as I imagined. The downsides, well, the rear seat is cramped; friends taller than 175cm will have to bend their legs. The 255 rear tires are thin, so you have to be cautious of scraping the wheels on Kuala Lumpur's bumpy roads. However, the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty offers peace of mind, and the Keyless + Auto Parking feature is a lifesaver at the Petronas Twin Towers parking lot. Overall, it's still great value!

This 430i M Sport has been driven for almost two years, and the most enjoyable part is the tight and responsive feel of rear-wheel drive when cornering. In the city, it accelerates instantly when you step on the gas, without any sluggishness. The Harman Kardon audio system is particularly comforting in traffic jams. However, the headspace in the rear seat is a bit tight for tall friends. That said, the safety features are fully equipped, making it reassuring to drive.

Driven a 420i Sport for three years, it's got plenty of power for commuting and overtaking, and it's super stable on the highway. The rear seats fit two people occasionally without feeling cramped, and the liftback trunk can handle weekend shopping for the whole family. Just need to be careful with the 19-inch tires over speed bumps, but with this handling and looks, it's worth it!

This two-door coupe has been driven for almost four years, with quick acceleration at city traffic lights and confidence in overtaking on highways when accelerating. The rear seats are not cramped for two friends, and the trunk can fit weekend camping gear. The leather interior feels premium, and the LED lights are bright enough on rainy days, but you need to drive slowly over speed bumps with the 19-inch tires.
