In the local C-Segment sedan market, most consumers demand fuel efficiency for daily commuting while also valuing comprehensive configurations. The 2019 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 SkyActiv-G is a model launched precisely to meet these demands. It offers a lower price compared to the 2.0L version, retains most of the intelligent safety features, and emphasizes smooth power delivery and practical space. Many potential buyers are curious whether this entry-level model can balance cost-effectiveness with driving experience. This test drive focuses on verifying its power performance, daily handling, and configuration practicality to provide a reference for users considering it for family use or commuting.

At first glance, the fluent feel of the KODO design language is striking. The front face features a shield-shaped grille integrated with slim LED headlights, while two prominent ridges on the hood extend from the A-pillar to the grille, enhancing the front-end's sense of strength. The side profile showcases lines extending from the fender to the taillights, paired with 16-inch multi-spoke wheels, giving it a well-proportioned look that shows no sense of cheapness, even as an entry-level model. The LED taillights at the rear have a smoked finish and exhibit high recognizability when lit, while the chrome trim below the rear bumper adds a touch of sophistication. Notably, the body seams are even, and the paint finish is glossy, with detailing that matches the positioning of a C-segment car.

Inside the car, the interior has an asymmetrical design oriented towards the driver, with the central display tilted about 7 degrees towards the driver, reducing the need for significant head movement during operation. The top of the dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials, and the inner side of the door panels is wrapped in leatherette, providing a pleasant tactile feel. The 8.8-inch touchscreen is clear and supports Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring, although some functions must be operated via the rotary dial near the central armrest, which becomes intuitive after some practice. In terms of features, the 10-way electrically adjustable driver's seat with two memory settings offers convenient adjustment. The HUD head-up display can show real-time speed and navigation information, reducing the need to look down. There is also a 220V power outlet in the front, which is practical for charging electronic devices during long trips. The rear seats come with air vents and ISO FIX anchors, catering to family-oriented users.

Regarding space, the vehicle has a wheelbase of 2725mm. After a 175cm tall front passenger adjusts the seat, there is still one fist and two fingers of headroom. For a rear passenger of the same height, legroom reaches two fists, with headroom of one fist. Even with a person seated in the middle, the central floor hump is not excessively high, ensuring longer rides remain relatively comfortable. The trunk has a capacity of 444 liters, enough to fit two 28-inch suitcases and several backpacks. The rear seats can be folded in a 60/40 split, allowing for extended space to accommodate longer items. Interior storage compartments are also relatively plentiful; the door panel slots can hold two bottles of mineral water, and both the center console and glove compartment offer sufficient capacity for daily use.

In terms of performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power output of 120PS, with peak torque available at 4000rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily commutes, the start-up response is smooth, the throttle pedal is tuned linearly, providing adequate power even with a light press. At low to medium speeds, the transmission shifts promptly, keeping the RPM mostly below 2000 to ensure fuel efficiency. When pushing the accelerator for faster speeds, the engine needs to rev above 4000rpm to release its full torque. While it doesn’t offer a strong push-back sensation, as long as you press the pedal earlier, the power output meets the pace for overtaking. There are two driving modes to choose from: Normal and Sport. When switched to Sport mode, the transmission delays shifting gears, maintaining the RPMs around 3000 for a more responsive performance.

The handling and chassis performance are in line with Mazda's consistent tuning style. The steering is precise with minimal play, the resistance when turning is uniform, and the front end's directional response is clear when cornering. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson and rear multi-link structure, tuned to be firm but resilient. It quickly absorbs bumps and potholes, with no excessive body movement. At high speeds, the chassis remains stable, and even when encountering crosswinds, the car does not feel floaty. Regarding braking, the brake pedal travel is moderate, providing sufficient braking force from the initial stage. During sudden braking, the vehicle's posture remains stable, with no noticeable nose dive.

In the fuel consumption test, we simulated daily commuting conditions, including 20% congested roads, 50% urban expressways, and 30% highways, with air conditioning turned on throughout. The final measured fuel consumption was 6.1L/100km, which is close to the official figure of 5.8L/100km, showcasing good fuel economy. In terms of noise control, cabin noise at idle is almost negligible. When cruising at 60km/h, both tire and wind noise are minimal. At highway speeds of 120km/h, wind noise slightly increases but does not affect normal conversations. The seats offer excellent wrapping and support, ensuring that the driver’s lower back does not become too fatigued during long drives.

Overall, the core strength of the 2019 Mazda 3 Sedan 1.5 SkyActiv-G lies in its balanced performance: smooth and adequate power, economical fuel consumption. In terms of features, it retains seven airbags, active braking, lane change assist, and other safety configurations, as well as comfort features like electric seats and HUD, making it highly cost-effective. Compared to other vehicles in the same class, it has certain advantages in handling and interior quality. Although the power is not as strong as the 2.0L version, it is entirely sufficient for daily commuting. This car is suitable for families that value fuel efficiency and comprehensive configurations, or for young professionals needing a reliable commuting car. If your budget is limited and you don't want to compromise on features, this would be a great choice.

This Mazda 3 has been driven for over two years, its looks are absolutely stunning, and the Soul Red color turns heads on the streets! The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine provides power for overtaking with just a tap on the pedal, and it's very stable at 120km/h on the highway. However, the fuel consumption of 7.6L/100km for city commuting is a bit painful, but the HUD and memory seats are amazing features. Finding a parking spot is also effortless with the electric parking brake and automatic parking.

Last week, I went on an outing to the foot of Yunding Mountain with my family. On the return trip, we encountered heavy rain and steep slopes. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine struggled a bit during climbing, but the 6AT transmission shifted smoothly, and with hill-start assist, there was no rollback. In the heavy rain, the LED automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers were very convenient, and the rear air conditioning kept the kids quiet. The vehicle stability system was a great help on slippery curves, and the 7 airbags and active braking system gave me peace of mind. The "Soul of Motion" design still stood out in the misty rain, but the trunk felt a bit cramped after fitting three suitcases. Overall, it's a good car suitable for families.

After driving my Mazda 3 2.0 high trim for three years, the fuel consumption during traffic commutes can stabilize at 6.2, and it doesn't feel sluggish even when occasionally accelerating for overtaking. The best part is the automatic parking; it slips into tight spots effortlessly. The HUD allows me to check navigation without looking down, and the safety features are fully loaded. The only minor drawback: the rear middle floor is slightly raised, making it a bit cramped with three passengers, but overall it's definitely worth it!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain, and just after passing the toll station, there was a heavy downpour. The steering wheel grip feels fine and delicate, and the HUD displays both the speed and navigation, so there's no need to look down at the screen. The automatic braking system suddenly issued a warning, and it turned out the car in front braked suddenly. The system intervened to help me decelerate, causing a scare but also providing a sense of relief. The kids in the back said the air conditioning was cool enough, and even after loading three boxes of fruit in the trunk, there was still space left. The only slight regret is that when climbing the mountain roads, the 2.0L engine power felt a bit weak; I needed to press the accelerator harder to keep up. However, overall, this car didn’t disappoint in terms of safety and comfort on rainy and mountainous roads.

This 1.5 engine is so weak, it makes me want to cry! When climbing hills, even flooring the gas pedal feels like just going through the motions, and overtaking requires half a minute of preparation…
