Mercedes-Benz AMG A-Class 2019 Review

In recent years, the luxury compact performance car market has been gradually heating up in Malaysia. Young consumers want the prestige of the tri-star emblem while unwilling to compromise on everyday practicality and driving pleasure. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG A-Class A35 was created precisely to meet this niche demand. With its 306-horsepower 2.0T engine and Mercedes-AMG's specialized chassis tuning as its core selling points, it retains the family-oriented attributes of the A-Class while incorporating performance genes. In this test drive, we aim to focus on verifying: can it strike the perfect balance between daily commuting and weekend fun?
From a distance, the overall silhouette of the A35 continues the sleek lines of the regular A-Class, but the AMG-specific details give it a highly distinctive look. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with vertical bars on the inside, while two raised muscle lines stretch forward from the A-pillar across the hood, enhancing its powerful presence. The air intakes on either side of the front bumper have a sharp design, and the lower lip is accented with a silver diffuser, adding to the sporty ambiance. On the side, 19-inch multi-spoke wheels paired with 235/35 R19 tires stand out, the front wheel arches slightly flared, and the side skirts are color-matched with the body, while the "AMG" badge on the rear C-pillar clearly highlights its identity. At the rear, dual round exhaust pipes on both sides echo the lower diffuser, and the LED taillights feature a smoked-out design with illuminated L-shaped light bands exclusive to the tri-star emblem, offering high nighttime recognizability.
Inside the car, the A35 continues the luxurious feel of the Mercedes family, with added AMG-specific details. The dashboard features dual 10.25-inch screens; the fully digital instrument cluster on the left can switch between three modes: Classic, Sporty, and Super Sporty. The right touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, with an operation smoothness meeting expectations. The steering wheel is an AMG flat-bottom design wrapped in Nappa leather, offering a substantial grip. The left side integrates controls for driver assistance and multimedia, while the right side is equipped with paddle shifters. The seats combine genuine leather and Alcantara materials, with the front seats supporting electric adjustment. The side bolsters provide excellent support during spirited driving, and the "AMG" embroidery on the headrests adds a touch of detail. Interior materials mainly consist of soft-touch plastics and metallic trims, with frequently touched areas like inside the door panels and the central armrest box wrapped in leather, which offers a superior feel compared to competitors in the same segment.
As a compact car, the A35's space performance exceeds expectations. The dimensions are 4559mm in length, 1796mm in width, and 1411mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2729mm. The front passenger headroom is about a fist and two fingers, and legroom is spacious. For rear passengers of about 175cm in height, headroom provides a fist's space, and legroom allows two fists, meeting the needs of daily family use without issue. The trunk has a capacity of 420L and features a regular shape. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, and when folded, the capacity expands to about 1200L, capable of accommodating a stroller or luggage for a short trip. In terms of storage space, door storage slots can hold two bottles of water, the central armrest box has a moderate depth, and the front cup holders come with covers, showcasing practical design elements.
After ignition, the 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a deep roar, unleashing a maximum horsepower of 306hp at 5800rpm and a peak torque of 400N·m continuously from 3000rpm. Paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the car starts smoothly in standard mode, with linear throttle response, suitable for daily commuting. Switching to Sport mode makes the transmission shift logic more aggressive, with noticeably faster downshifts, and providing an instant push-back feeling when you step on the accelerator. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.8 seconds can easily be achieved in actual tests, and during mid-speed overtakes, a slight tap on the paddle shifters delivers immediate power on demand.
The chassis tuning is a highlight of the A35. The front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension have been exclusively enhanced by AMG, with stiffer springs and damper settings while retaining a certain level of shock absorption. During daily driving, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations from speed bumps or potholes on urban roads without transmitting excessive harshness. When cornering, the suspension provides excellent support, effectively limiting body roll. The steering is precise with minimal dead zone, offering clear feedback of road surface information. The braking system performs consistently, with a braking distance of about 35 meters from 100km/h, and shows little thermal decay after multiple consecutive stops. In terms of fuel efficiency, the consumption is about 9.5L/100km in congested urban conditions, dropping to 6.8L/100km during highway cruising, and achieving a combined fuel consumption close to the official figure of 7.3L/100km, which is decent for a performance car.
During daily driving, the A35’s NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) control is commendable. At speeds below 60km/h, tire and wind noise are not pronounced, and engine noise is well suppressed in standard mode, only being deliberately amplified in Sport+ mode. The seat cushioning is moderately firm, providing adequate lumbar support even for long drives without causing fatigue. The air conditioning system is a dual-zone automatic climate control, with independent rear air vents, and the front seats are equipped with heating functions (although this is rarely needed in Malaysia, it’s a thoughtful feature). In terms of driver assistance features, functions such as lane departure warning, active brake assist, and blind spot monitoring are all comprehensive. The HUD (head-up display) can show speed and navigation information, enhancing driving convenience.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG A35 lies in its versatility. It carries AMG’s performance DNA to meet the handling needs of driving enthusiasts while retaining the family-friendly traits of the A-Class, with sufficient space and configurations for daily commuting. Compared with its class competitor, the BMW M135i, the A35 offers a more luxurious interior and richer configurations. In contrast to the Audi S3, its chassis tuning strikes a better balance between sportiness and comfort.
This car is suitable for two groups of people: first, young professionals aged 25-35 who desire the prestige of the three-pointed star brand and also want to enjoy the driving experience on their commute home; second, small families who need adequate space for weekend outings and the occasional opportunity for spirited driving.
The 2019 AMG A35 is not a purebred track machine, but rather a “performance car that can run errands.” It adopts AMG’s sporty genes to break the monotony of luxury compact cars while lowering the usage threshold for performance vehicles with practical features. It is an ideal choice balancing style, fun, and daily usability.
