Mercedes-Benz AMG A-Class Review

In today's market for high-performance compact hatchbacks, there aren't many models that can satisfy daily commuting while also providing track-level driving pleasure. The Mercedes-Benz AMG A-Class A45S 4Matic+ Limited Edition, launched in August 2024, is one of the highlights. As a limited version of the AMG A45 series, it is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine capable of delivering a maximum output of 421 horsepower, achieving 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 3.9 seconds, while retaining the practical layout of a 5-door, 5-seat car. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this "hot hatch" can truly strike a perfect balance between performance and everyday usability.
From a distance, the exterior of this Limited Edition A45S looks more aggressive than the standard version. The front features AMG's iconic vertical-bar grille, flanked by sharp LED headlight clusters, with the "eyebrow" design of the daytime running lights enhancing its recognizability. The side profile of the car has compact and smooth lines, with a body length of 4453mm paired with 19-inch wheels. The tires are sized 245/35 R19, and the low aspect ratio design enhances its sporty appearance. At the rear, the quad-exhaust pipe layout and diffuser design constantly remind pedestrians of its performance credentials, while the LED taillights also provide an impressive visual effect when illuminated.
Once inside the car, the interior continues Mercedes-Benz's characteristic luxury while incorporating AMG-specific elements. The dashboard adopts a dual-screen design with a 12.5-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, featuring a clear and smooth interface that supports a variety of vehicle information displays. The steering wheel comes with the AMG logo and paddle shifters, offering a solid grip. The front seats are electrically adjustable and have good bolstering, providing adequate support during aggressive driving; the rear seats are manually adjustable, and the 2729mm wheelbase ensures basic legroom, making it reasonably comfortable for adults. In terms of storage space, the front central armrest and door panel storage compartments are sufficient in capacity, while the 355L trunk volume is enough to meet daily shopping or short trips. For features, it is equipped with 360-degree parking cameras, automatic parking assistance, ACC adaptive cruise control, and more, making everyday use quite convenient.
When starting the engine, the sound of the 2.0T engine is noticeably richer than that of a regular family car. Switching to Sport mode and stepping on the accelerator, the 421 horsepower and 500N·m of torque are instantly unleashed, providing a strong pushback sensation. The 0-100 km/h acceleration performance of 3.9 seconds lives up to its reputation. For daily driving, the Comfort mode delivers a smoother power output, making it suitable for urban commuting. The 8-speed DCT transmission offers quick gear shifts, especially in manual mode, where using the paddle shifters provides immediate power response. In terms of handling, steering is precise with very little play, and the suspension system is tuned on the stiff side, keeping the body well-controlled during cornering and inspiring confidence. However, when driving over bumpy surfaces, the suspension’s absorption of vibrations is not very thorough, which might make rear passengers feel slightly uncomfortable.
The performance of the all-wheel-drive system deserves special mention. The 4Matic+ system intelligently distributes power between the front and rear wheels according to road conditions, effectively improving vehicle stability on slippery surfaces or during spirited driving. The braking system provides a linear feel and ample stopping power, giving a sense of security. As for fuel consumption, the combined fuel efficiency in urban driving is approximately 10-12L/100km, while on highways, it can drop to about 8L/100km, which aligns with the levels expected from a high-performance car.
In terms of noise control, tire and wind noise can be quite noticeable at high speeds, but it remains within an acceptable range; engine noise is well-controlled in Comfort mode, while in Sport mode, the sound is intentionally amplified to enhance the driving atmosphere. The seat comfort is decent for long drives, with the front seats providing sufficient support and wrapping.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 AMG A45S 4Matic+ Limited Edition stand out: 421PS of powerful performance, 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.9 seconds, a practical 5-door layout, as well as Mercedes' luxurious interior and rich configurations. Compared with the AMG A35 4Matic in the same class, it offers a significant improvement in power, and although it costs about 215,000 MYR more, its performance is closer to that of a pure performance car. Compared with the old A45S, the new model has upgraded configurations and a more distinctive appearance.
This car is suitable for two types of people: one is performance car enthusiasts who pursue extreme driving pleasure and need a car that can race on the track while also serving as a daily driver; the other is young people who value brand and individuality, wanting a car that offers both a sense of luxury and sporty attributes. If you want the thrill of a performance car without sacrificing everyday convenience, this limited edition A45S is a great option.
