Mercedes-Benz AMG C-Class 2020 Review

In the luxury mid-size performance car market, the C-Class has always been an unavoidable choice for Malaysian consumers. They want the convenience and comfort of daily commuting, occasionally need to unleash their driving desires, and also need to keep the budget within a reasonable range. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 43 targets this demand with its 6-cylinder twin-turbo power, all-wheel-drive system, and equipment level that's close to the C 63, becoming the "affordable AMG" for many. In this test drive, we'll verify whether it can truly balance performance with daily usability and live up to its role as the "entry-level AMG".
From the exterior, the difference between the AMG C 43 and the standard C-Class is straightforward. The front face adopts the vertical-bar AMG-specific grille, paired with a sporty front bumper, larger air intakes on both sides, and black decorative strips inside, significantly increasing aggression compared to the standard version. The side of the car maintains the classic sloping backline of the C-Class, with slightly widened wheel arches, coupled with 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. The front tire size is 225/40 R19, and the rear tire is 255/35 R19, giving it a more lowered visual appearance. The changes at the rear focus on details: an AMG-style rear diffuser, quad-round exhaust outlets on each side, and a slightly upturned ducktail-style spoiler. The overall recognition is high without being overly ostentatious like the C 63, making it inconspicuous for daily driving. The lighting system comes standard with LEDs, and there are automatic headlights, daytime running lights, and front and rear fog lights, ensuring ample brightness and clear visibility while driving at night.
Sitting inside the car, the AMG C 43's interior continues Mercedes' luxurious feel, while incorporating performance elements. The center console is wrapped in a large area of soft-touch materials, paired with metal trims and piano-lacquered panels, offering a refined touch. The steering wheel is an AMG-exclusive flat-bottom design, wrapped in leather and providing a solid grip. The left side integrates cruise control and voice assistant buttons, while the right side controls multimedia adjustments. The standard shift paddles are relatively large and easy to use. The instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch fully digital display that can switch between Classic, Sport, and Supersport modes. In Supersport mode, it can show performance data such as RPM, gear position, and G-force, aligning with the positioning of a performance car. The 10.25-inch central control screen is not touch-sensitive but operates smoothly through the knob and touchpad. The system supports CarPlay and Android Auto, making daily use convenient. The seats are AMG sport seats made of genuine leather; the front seats support 14-way electric adjustment and memory functions. Their lateral support is stronger compared to the regular C-Class, with good lumbar and thigh wrapping, ensuring long trips remain comfortable. In terms of equipment, features such as a HUD head-up display, keyless entry/ignition, 360-degree panoramic camera, automatic parking, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and rear air vents are all included, making it highly practical. The sound system is the Burmester 21-speaker Sound Plus version, delivering clear sound and rich bass, which is quite satisfying for daily music listening needs.
As for space performance, the AMG C 43's body dimensions are 4704mm x 1810mm x 1429mm, with a wheelbase of 2840mm, identical to the C 63 S. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable driving position, a 175cm tall passenger has a fist's worth of headroom and ample legroom. Rear passengers have about four fingers of headroom and two fists of legroom. While the middle of the floor has a slight hump, it does not affect short-term rides, and taking family members on daily trips is not an issue. The trunk capacity is 435L, the same as the standard C-Class, capable of holding two 28-inch suitcases. The rear seats support a split-folding function, providing decent expandability to accommodate larger items occasionally. As for storage space, door pockets can hold two bottles of water, the center armrest box is moderately sized, and the front row has two cup holders and a wireless charging pad. Everyday small items have their designated spaces.
Powertrain-wise, the AMG C 43 is equipped with a 3.0L V6 twin-turbo engine that delivers a maximum power of 396PS and a peak torque of 520N·m. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 4.7 seconds, with a top speed of 250km/h. During actual driving, the power response is eager at the start, and the push-back feeling is noticeable even with a light press on the accelerator. The turbo kicks in early with no obvious lag. When switched to Sport+ mode, the transmission's shift logic becomes more aggressive, downshifting faster; pressing the accelerator deeply will quickly push the RPM above 5000, with continuous power output, offering confidence during overtaking. For daily commuting, the Comfort mode keeps the transmission in higher gears as much as possible, maintaining the RPM around 1500, resulting in minimal engine noise and lower fuel consumption. The official combined fuel consumption is 7.8L/100km. During our one-week test drive, the fuel consumption was approximately 9.5L/100km in congested urban traffic and 6.5L/100km during highway cruising. This performance is average, yet still notably more fuel-efficient than the C 63 S with 9.9L/100km.
In terms of handling and chassis, the AMG C 43’s suspension system has been sport-tuned, making it stiffer than the standard C-Class but still retaining a certain level of comfort. When driving on regular paved roads, small bumps are filtered out, and the car body does not bounce significantly over speed bumps. At high-speed cornering, the suspension provides sufficient support, with minimal body roll and good rear-end tracking. Combined with the all-wheel-drive system, the grip is strong, and even with heavy throttle inputs, there is no slippage, ensuring stable handling. The steering is precise with minimal play, and in Sport mode, the steering weight increases, making the drive more engaging. The braking system features ventilated front discs with a linear feedback on the brake pedal. You can feel the braking force right from the initial stage, and during full braking, the car remains stable with no significant nose-dive, and the stopping distance is short, providing a strong sense of safety for daily driving. Noise control is well-executed; during low-speed city driving, tire and engine noise are minimal. While cruising at 120km/h on the highway, wind noise mainly comes from the A-pillar, but it does not affect in-car conversations, overall meeting the standards of a luxury vehicle's cabin quietness.
Compared with its competitors in the same class, the AMG C 43 stands out with its advantages: the combination of the 3.0T V6 twin-turbo engine and all-wheel drive delivers smooth and strong power output, providing more stable handling on slippery roads compared to the similarly-priced BMW M340i (3.0T + rear-wheel drive). In terms of configurations, it is not far behind the C 63 S, offering features like HUD, Burmester sound system, 360-degree panoramic camera, and more. However, its price is only RM 401,115, which is nearly half of the RM 744,981 price of the C 63 S, making it a much more cost-effective choice. Nonetheless, it has some minor downsides: the central control screen is not touch-sensitive, making it less intuitive to operate compared to a touchscreen; while the trunk is adequate for use, it is slightly smaller than some competitors.
Overall, the 2020 AMG C 43 is a well-rounded performance car—comfortable for daily commuting, rich in features, and capable of delivering thrilling drives on occasion, all at a relatively affordable price. It is suitable for consumers who want the performance and luxury feel of an AMG but also need to balance family use, such as professionals aged 30-40 or young enthusiasts of performance cars with limited budgets. If you’re looking for a luxurious performance car that’s equally suited for grocery runs and occasional adrenaline-fueled drives, the AMG C 43 is worth considering.
