In recent years, Malaysia's luxury coupe market has been gradually recovering. Consumers no longer settle for simple brand premium but instead focus on the combination of design aesthetics, technological features, and driving balance. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE 300 4MATIC Coupé, being the brand's all-new two-door coupe model, has entered the local market as a CBU (completely built-up) import. Its core selling points lie in its elegant coupe design, comprehensive luxury features, and a 2.0T plug-in hybrid system that balances power and efficiency, making many luxury coupe enthusiasts highly anticipate it. This review will provide a comprehensive analysis from static features to dynamic performance to see if this car can stand firm in the fiercely competitive niche market.

From a distance, the CLE 300 4MATIC Coupé's lines are sleek and dynamic, with a signature coupe fastback design and short front overhang, giving the body proportions a highly harmonious appearance. At the front, the large shield-shaped grille features a single chrome strip, with the iconic three-pointed star emblem in the center, maximizing its recognizability. The sharp LED headlights on both sides adopt a matrix light source, delivering clear and high-tech visual effects when illuminated. Along the vehicle's side, a straight waistline extends from the fender to the rear, complemented by 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels to enhance the sporty vibe further. The inward-curved design at the bottom of the door adds depth to the body styling. At the rear, the LED taillights are arranged horizontally, with internal light strips forming an "L" shape, echoing the front headlights. The lower rear bumper is fitted with dual chrome exhaust tips, which, although modest in size, sufficiently elevate the sporty ambiance. The overall exterior design avoids exaggerated elements while demonstrating the meticulousness of a luxury brand through its details.

Stepping inside, the luxurious feel of the cabin is immediately apparent. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch and leather materials, with soft materials covering every touchpoint, accented by silver trim to enhance its texture. A 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch MBUX central touchscreen form a dual-screen setup with high resolution and smooth operation. The central display is tilted six degrees towards the driver for ease of use during driving. The multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in genuine leather, offering a comfortable grip. The left controls are reserved for the driving assistance system settings, while the right handles media and phone functions, with a clear operational logic. Paddle shifters are mounted behind the steering wheel, enhancing driving enjoyment. The front seats come with electric adjustment, memory, heating, and ventilation functions, offering great support for both the backrest and cushion, ensuring comfort even after extended periods. The rear seats feature a 60:40 split-folding design. In their standard position, they provide sufficient seating space for passengers up to 175 cm tall, though headroom might be slightly constrained. However, this is typical for coupe models. In terms of storage space, the front center armrest box provides moderate capacity, and door storage compartments can hold water bottles and small items. The trunk offers a capacity of 420L, which suffices for daily commuting or short trips.

In terms of performance, the CLE 300 4MATIC Coupé is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor to form a plug-in hybrid system. The engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 261.7 PS and a peak torque of 400 N·m, while the electric motor provides an additional 23 PS and 205 N·m. The setup is matched with a 9-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 6.2 seconds. During actual driving, the electric motor kicks in during the initial stages, offering a highly responsive power delivery without the turbo lag characteristic of traditional fuel cars. When the accelerator is pressed harder, the engine and electric motor work together, providing continuous and linear acceleration. When overtaking, a slight press of the accelerator produces ample power reserves. The transmission shifts smoothly, with almost imperceptible gear changes even at low speeds.

In terms of handling performance, the steering wheel offers precise direction, with minimal play and clear responsiveness. The suspension system uses front and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for a sportier feel without compromising comfort. When driving on city roads, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations from speed bumps or small jolts, transmitting little discomfort. During high-speed cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the four-wheel-drive system enhances the vehicle's grip, delivering excellent stability. Noise control is also impressive, as the vehicle effectively suppresses wind and tire noise, maintaining a relatively quiet cabin even at high speeds. Engine noise only mildly enters the cabin at high RPMs, but it's not disruptive. As for fuel consumption, we tested an average fuel consumption of about 6.8L per 100 kilometers under mixed road conditions. Considering its 2.0T plug-in hybrid powertrain, this performance is quite outstanding.

Overall, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE 300 4MATIC Coupé has very clear core advantages: an elegant and sophisticated exterior design, a luxurious interior with rich features, a balance of power and fuel efficiency from the plug-in hybrid system, and solid handling performance. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the BMW 4 Series Coupé, the CLE has the edge in terms of configuration, especially with standard features like heated/ventilated seats and the Burmester sound system, making it a good value proposition.

The target audience for this car is also quite clear: it suits those who seek the prestige of a luxury brand while prioritizing daily driving comfort and dynamic performance. This includes young professionals who value quality of life, or families needing a car that balances business and leisure. As a two-door coupé, it meets the practical demands of daily commuting while providing enjoyable driving experiences on the weekends.

In conclusion, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE 300 4MATIC Coupé is a well-rounded luxury coupé with no significant drawbacks, striking a fine balance in design, features, power, and handling. If you're looking for a luxury coupé that's both stylish and practical, this is a model worth considering.

The last car I owned was a BMW 4 Series. I switched to the CLE 300 4MATIC primarily for its interior and safety. The exterior gets 4 points; the coupe-like lines are elegant enough, but the chrome front grille looks a bit old-fashioned and less sporty compared to competitors. The interior deserves 5 points; the Burmester sound system is incredibly comforting when stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, and the ventilated seats are perfect for combating tropical weather. Safety also scores 5 points. Last week on the Penang highway, while using ACC for adaptive cruise control, a motorcycle suddenly darted out, and the auto emergency braking system stopped the car immediately. It was a nerve-wracking moment but truly life-saving. A downside is the rear headroom: anyone 175 cm tall sitting straight up will brush against the roof. On weekends driving to Genting Highlands, the 4MATIC system is impressively stable, with no skidding on curves, and the hybrid system makes hill climbs non-sluggish. However, the 420L trunk can only fit two carry-on suitcases before it's full. Overall, it's worth RM518k, suitable for those who prioritize quality and safety.

This morning, while cornering, the car body was so stable as if it was glued to the road. This all-wheel drive was truly worth choosing!

This CLE 300 PHEV has been driven for two months, and it's really awesome! During the morning rush hour traffic jams, the electric motor quietly delivers power; when overtaking, the gas and electric power work together to surge forward, and it takes just 6.2 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h—plenty powerful. With the Burmester sound system playing music, even being stuck in traffic becomes enjoyable. It's just that the rear seats are a bit cramped for two big guys, but hey, it's a coupe—style is all that matters!
