MINI Clubman 2018 Review

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-segment market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers are not only pursuing unique designs but also value the balance between practical space and driving pleasure. The 2018 MINI Clubman Cooper S, as one of the rare five-door models under the brand, stands out as a "niche premium" vehicle in the segment with its unique split rear door design and 2.0T power. In this test drive, we specifically explored whether it can balance MINI’s driving DNA with practicality for family use.
In terms of exterior, the Clubman Cooper S retains the iconic round headlights and retro silhouette of the MINI family, but its 4253mm length and 2670mm wheelbase make it more elongated than the three-door version. The front grille features a black honeycomb design paired with two muscular lines on the hood, accentuating its sporty feel. The highlight on the side of the vehicle is the rear split-door design, which does not require the front doors to be opened first, maximizing practicality and recognition. The 18-inch dual five-spoke wheels paired with 225/40 R18 tires further boost its sporty stance. At the rear, the horizontally arranged LED taillights have high recognizability when lit, while the dual-exhaust outlets and diffuser at the bottom echo the performance-oriented positioning of the Cooper S.
Inside the car, the classic circular center console remains the visual centerpiece. However, the materials have been upgraded with soft-touch plastic and metallic trim, making it feel more refined compared to the entry-level model. The instrument cluster is an electronic backlit analog design, with clear information display. The multifunctional steering wheel has an appropriate size, wrapped in leather for a comfortable grip. Regarding configuration, the front row features electrically adjustable seats with memory function, offering good support and wrapping. The rear seats are equipped with air-conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet, meeting daily needs. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is easy to adjust, and LED headlights along with front and rear fog lights are standard, ensuring safety and convenience are not compromised. In terms of space, the front-row passengers with a height of 180cm have a fist-worth of headroom remaining, and rear-seat passengers of the same height enjoy two fists' worth of legroom and one fist's worth of headroom, making it notably roomier than the three-door MINI. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 360L, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats in a 40:20:40 split configuration, easily accommodating strollers or suitcases.
For the powertrain, the 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers maximum power at 5000rpm and maximum torque as early as 1250rpm, paired with an AT gearbox. During daily driving, the car offers a quick start with a responsive throttle. The low-end torque available at 1250rpm ensures smooth low-speed driving in traffic, and pressing the accelerator harder produces a noticeable pushback feeling in the middle and high-speed range. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7 seconds, making overtaking confident and effortless. In terms of steering, the steering wheel has minimal play and offers precise direction, characteristic of MINI’s tuning. During cornering, road feedback is distinctly felt. The chassis uses a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, providing strong support and effectively controlling body roll during turns. However, the suspension is relatively stiff, and bumps can be felt noticeably when driving over speed bumps.
In fuel consumption tests, the car achieved approximately 8.5L per 100km in congested city driving and dropped to 6.2L during highway cruising, which is close to the official figure of 5.9L, meeting expectations for a 2.0T model. In terms of noise control, tire and wind noise become more apparent at a highway speed of 120km/h but remain within an acceptable range. The seats have good wrapping, ensuring long drives are not too exhausting.
Overall, the 2018 MINI Clubman Cooper S has standout core advantages: its unique split-door design, the driving pleasure brought by the 2.0T engine is rare among its class, and the five-seat space and practical configurations also cater to family needs. Compared to similarly priced C-segment models like the Golf GTI, the Clubman offers more distinctive design and flexible space; while compared to regular family cars, its driving texture is more sporty.
This car is suitable for two types of people: one is family users who like the MINI brand but need five-seat space; the other is young people who seek individuality and driving pleasure but do not want to sacrifice practicality. It is neither a purely family car nor an extreme performance car, but strikes a good balance between personality, fun, and practicality.
All in all, the 2018 MINI Clubman Cooper S is a "well-rounded personality car"—it has the spirit of MINI and can also meet daily family needs. If you want to choose a non-boring option among many family cars, it is worth considering.
