MINI Convertible 2020 Review

In Malaysia's B-segment car market, convertible models that balance personalization and practicality are not very common. The arrival of the 2020 Mini Convertible Cooper S precisely fills the gap for consumers seeking a car that is both suitable for daily commuting and offers the occasional joy of open-top driving. The core selling points of this car lie in its combination of Mini's classic retro design, 194PS power output, and the unique driving experience of a convertible. In this test drive, we aim to evaluate whether these highlights fulfill user expectations in real-world use while also identifying its performance in aspects like space and fuel consumption during daily use.
From a distance, the 2020 Mini Convertible Cooper S still has the familiar classic Mini silhouette — a compact body paired with smooth roof lines. Even with the top closed, its identity as a convertible is unmistakable. At the front, the most iconic feature is the signature round LED headlights, which are highly recognizable when the ring-shaped daytime running lights are illuminated. The front grille features a black honeycomb design, complemented by the sporty front bumper to add a dynamic touch to the front. On the side, two simple waistlines extend from the front to the rear, and the 204/45 R17 tire specification perfectly matches the body proportions, without appearing overly exaggerated. The rear design is relatively simple, with round LED taillights echoing the headlights, and a dual-exhaust layout on the rear bumper hinting at its power performance. Overall, the exterior avoids unnecessary complexity, retaining Mini's retro charm while showcasing a sense of sportiness through the details.
Sitting inside, the first thing you notice is Mini's unique retro-styled interior. The dashboard is covered in extensive soft-touch materials, accented with silver trim, providing a decent tactile experience at your fingertips. The steering wheel features a three-spoke multifunctional design, with a chunky and solid grip, and includes paddle shifters for convenient daily use. The center console is equipped with a 6.5-inch touchscreen supporting basic multimedia functions; however, the size is not particularly large and requires a slight downward glance during operation. The front seats are designed with a sporty style, offering decent support for everyday driving. However, during prolonged use, the seat hardness might feel slightly noticeable. In terms of features, it comes standard with automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and electrically folding mirrors, which can meet basic daily needs.
As for body dimensions, it measures 3850mm in length, 1727mm in width, and 1415mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2495mm. The front-row space is average; a passenger of 175cm height will have about a fist's worth of head and legroom. However, the rear space is quite tight; passengers of the same height will find almost no extra legroom and can only occasionally accommodate children or shorter passengers. The trunk offers a storage capacity of just 160L, which can fit two 20-inch carry-on suitcases when the top is closed. However, the space is further reduced when the top is open. While daily shopping might not be an issue, long-distance travel with large luggage could prove challenging. In terms of storage, the front door pockets can hold a water bottle, while the center armrest compartment is quite small, suitable only for loose change or items like a phone.
Powertrain: The 2020 Mini Convertible Cooper S is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 194PS and a peak torque range of 1350-4600rpm. During actual driving, the power response at the initial stage is relatively keen, with a noticeable push-back sensation felt with a light press on the accelerator. During mid-to-high-speed acceleration, even when the speed reaches 80km/h, deep pressing the accelerator allows for continuous power output, making overtaking feel confident. The gearbox is of the AT type, featuring a clear shifting logic. During daily driving, gear shifts are smooth with almost no noticeable jerks. When switched to sports mode, the shifting speed increases, and combined with paddle shifters, it offers a more direct driving experience.
In terms of handling, the car’s steering wheel is precise with minimal play, providing a clear sense of front-end direction during cornering. The suspension system uses a rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for a sporty feel. When turning, body roll is well-controlled, inspiring sufficient confidence. However, when navigating bumpy roads, the suspension's ability to filter out the unevenness is average, and smaller vibrations can be quite noticeably transmitted to the cabin. For braking performance, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes deliver stable performance. The brake pedal has a linear feel, and the body remains stable during emergency braking. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 5.7L/100km. During our test drive, which included city roads and occasional highway segments, the average fuel consumption was about 6.5L per 100km. For a 2.0L convertible, this performance is fairly acceptable.
When it comes to ride comfort, with the top closed, the noise control in the cabin is quite commendable. Wind and tire noise is not particularly noticeable even when driving at high speeds. However, with the top open and speeds above 60km/h, wind noise gradually increases, requiring you to raise the volume to clearly hear the music. As mentioned earlier, the seat comfort is fine for short drives, but for long journeys, it might become a bit tiring. Additionally, the opening and closing time of the convertible top are very fast, taking about 18 seconds to complete, and this can be done at speeds under 50km/h, making it very practical for everyday use.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2020 Mini Convertible Cooper S are quite evident: its classic retro design has high recognition, the 194PS power output meets sporty demands, the convertible function provides a unique driving experience, and the 4-year unlimited mileage warranty gives users added peace of mind. Compared to other convertibles in the same class, its cost performance is quite good — the price is lower than some imported convertibles, and the configurations are generally sufficient. However, its shortcomings are also prominent: the rear space is cramped, the trunk capacity is limited, making it not very suitable for users who frequently need to accommodate 4 people or carry large luggage.
This car is more suitable for those who value individuality and driving pleasure, such as single young people or couples. It is flexible enough for daily commuting, and during weekends you can open the top to go for a drive along the beach or countryside to enjoy the thrill of a convertible. However, if you need a car that can cater to family requirements, its limited space might disappoint you. But if you are looking for a "unique driving experience," then this would be a good choice.
Overall, the 2020 Mini Convertible Cooper S is a car of "clear trade-offs": it sacrifices some practicality in exchange for unique convertible fun and sporty performance. If you can accept its spatial shortcomings and want a convertible that can handle daily driving while occasionally "letting loose," then it is worth considering.
