Great Wall Motors introduced the Ora brand in May 2018, focusing on electric cars. The initial lineup included the iQ5 (later iQ) crossover and the R1 (later Black Cat) city car. Sales of the iQ commenced in August 2018, marking the official launch of the brand. The third model, R2 (later White Cat), was previewed in June 2019, with production starting in July 2020. Inspired by Deng Xiaoping's quote, the 'cat' series vehicles emphasize functionality: "No matter if it is a white cat or a black cat; as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat." Expanding globally, Ora entered Europe, Thailand, Malaysia, South Africa, and Australia in late 2022, followed by Brazil in 2023. The brand was unveiled at the Indonesia International Auto Show in 2023 and is set to be introduced to the Indonesian market in 2024.
