2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA 45 4MATIC Review

In recent years, the local market for luxury compact performance cars has been gaining traction. Young consumers desire both brand sophistication and a balance between daily commuting and occasional spirited driving. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA 45 4MATIC, as one of the benchmark models in this niche, has long been the target of many performance enthusiasts with its 4.2-second 0-100 km/h acceleration and exclusive AMG tuning. This time we got our hands on the car for a detailed test, focusing on its performance in city commuting, highway cruising, and mountain road driving, to see if this "pocket rocket" can still meet the needs of today's users.
From an exterior perspective, the 2018 AMG CLA 45 retains the classic fastback silhouette of the CLA series, with smooth and aggressive lines throughout. The front end features AMG’s signature single-louver grille paired with a prominent three-pointed star emblem, giving it high recognition. Below, the large air intakes on both sides are decorated with black trim strips, further enhancing the performance aesthetics. Along the side of the vehicle, 19-inch multi-spoke wheels combined with 235/35 R19 sports tires offer a compact and strong visual impression. A waistline stretches from the front fenders to the rear, complemented by the fastback roof that creates a low, sporty stance. At the rear, the dual round exhaust outlets are a hallmark of AMG models, while the small spoiler on the trunk and the diffuser below improve aerodynamic performance. Regarding lighting, LED headlights and daytime running lights come as standard, providing ample brightness and excellent nighttime visibility when illuminated.
Sitting inside, the overall interior style leans toward sporty luxury. The dashboard features extensive soft-touch materials, accented with silver trim strips, aligning with the premium positioning of the brand. The instrument cluster utilizes an Electroluminescent Analogue design, delivering clear displays of key information such as RPM, speed, and fuel level. The multifunction steering wheel, equipped with paddle shifters, offers a solid grip and convenient control. The size of the central control screen is moderate—while not as large as in newer models, it’s functionally complete, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and basic navigation. In terms of features, the front seats are electrically adjustable with good support, ensuring that long drives remain comfortable. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split to expand trunk space. Practical features like keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera are also included, making daily use more convenient. As for space, the 2699mm wheelbase places it within the mid-range for compact cars. The front-row seating is spacious, offering ample headroom and legroom for passengers up to 180cm tall. The rear legroom feels slightly tight and may be a bit cramped for long trips, but it should suffice for everyday family use. The trunk capacity stands at 470 liters, enough to fit two 28-inch suitcases, providing decent practicality.
In terms of performance, the 2018 AMG CLA 45 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum power of 386PS and a peak torque of 475N·m, coupled with a 7-speed DCT transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. In actual driving, the power response is quick during takeoff, and pressing the accelerator deeply results in a strong sense of pushback. The officially claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.2 seconds feels genuinely attainable. Overtaking requires just a light press on the gas pedal. The transmission shifts clearly and quickly in Sport mode, with crisp downshifts and rev-matching. In Normal mode, it caters more to smoothness, suitable for daily commuting. On the handling front, the steering is precise with minimal slack, giving the driver sufficient confidence when cornering. The suspension system features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, which is on the stiffer side. As a result, it does not absorb road bumps very smoothly but offers excellent support during mountain driving. Body roll is well-controlled. Regarding fuel consumption, the comprehensive fuel consumption tested under mixed driving conditions is about 8.5L/100km. When cruising on the highway, it drops to around 7L, which is a reasonable performance for a high-performance 2.0T engine.
In terms of sound insulation, the vehicle does a good job controlling wind and tire noise, and conversations inside the cabin remain unaffected even at a high speed of 120km/h. Engine noise can be heard in the cabin at high RPMs, but it is not harsh; instead, it enhances the sporty driving atmosphere. The braking system performs reliably, with a linear feel to the brake pedal, and during emergency braking, the car body remains stable without noticeable nose-diving.
Overall, the main advantages of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA 45 4MATIC lie in its strong performance, precise handling, and the prestige of a luxury brand. Compared with competitors like the Audi RS3 and BMW M2, its fastback design is more stylish, and the all-wheel-drive system provides better stability on slippery roads. However, its downsides are also evident, such as the compact rear space and a less futuristic interior compared to newer models. This car is suitable for young consumers who need a daily driver but also occasionally seek driving excitement or those who have an emotional connection to the AMG brand. If your budget is around 400,000 MYR and you want a compact car that balances performance and luxury, the 2018 AMG CLA 45 4MATIC is worth considering.
