BMW M3 Review

In today's luxury performance sedan market, the 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged models remain a favorite among car enthusiasts—they need practicality for daily commuting while delivering pure driving passion when you step on the accelerator. The 2023 BMW M3 Competition is a popular contender in this segment, inheriting the performance genes of M Power while offering upgrades in both configuration and power compared to the previous model. This time, we got both the rear-wheel-drive version and the xDrive all-wheel-drive version for test drives. The main purpose is to see if it can balance daily usability with extreme driving performance, and whether the differences between the two models justify the extra RM10,000.
The 2023 M3 Competition has a very high level of recognizability in its exterior design, with an overall style that is more aggressive than the regular 3 Series. The standout feature at the front is the large-sized kidney grille. Although its design is somewhat controversial, in practice, it does enhance the sporty feel, and the grille features an active shutter function to optimize aerodynamics at high speeds. The body lines extend smoothly from the hood to the rear, with bold waistlines that, combined with the 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels, offer a well-proportioned side profile. The quad-tailpipe layout at the rear is a signature feature of M models, and the taillights use full LED light sources with good recognizability when lit up. For the lighting system, LED headlights and daytime running lights are standard, while automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers ensure practicality for various daily driving conditions.
Inside the car, the interior continues BMW's family design style, primarily using soft leather and Alcantara materials that provide a good tactile feel. The center console layout is clear, with a 12.3-inch central touchscreen that supports both touch input and iDrive knob control. The response speed is quick, and the system runs smoothly. In terms of core features, the HUD head-up display comes as standard, so there's no need to lower your head to check the dashboard while driving. The Keyless entry and start system is very convenient, eliminating the need to take out the key when getting in and out of the car. The seats are designed in a sporty style with good support, and the front seats are electrically adjustable, though the steering wheel adjustment is manual, which is a slight drawback. As for rear seat space, with a wheelbase of 2857mm, passengers up to 175cm tall still have about two fists of legroom and won't hit their heads, which makes it suitable for family use. Storage capability is average; the front armrest box and door panel storage compartments can accommodate some daily items. The rear seats are fitted with air vents and power outlets, ensuring comfort for rear passengers on long trips.
In terms of power, the 2023 M3 Competition is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 517PS and a maximum torque of 650Nm, an improvement over the 510PS of the 2021 model. It's paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which shifts quickly, especially in Sport mode where downshifts are highly responsive. The rear-wheel-drive version has an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds, while the xDrive all-wheel-drive version achieves it in just 3.5 seconds. During the test drive, you can feel the strong pushback right from the start, with mid-range acceleration and overtaking being effortlessly quick. When pressing the accelerator hard, the exhaust emits a deep and resonant sound, adding to the driving excitement. There are three driving modes available: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. In Comfort mode, power delivery is smooth, making it suitable for daily commuting, while in Sport+ mode, the suspension stiffens and the steering becomes heavier, making it more suitable for mountain roads or track driving.
Control and chassis performance are the highlights of the M3. The front suspension is a MacPherson independent suspension, and the rear suspension is a five-link independent suspension, tuned to be sportier. During daily driving, the suspension can filter out most small bumps, but you can still feel obvious vibrations when going over speed bumps. On mountain roads, the steering is precise, the body has very little roll, and stability during cornering is excellent. The rear-wheel-drive version tends to skid during hard acceleration from a standstill, requiring careful throttle control, while the xDrive all-wheel-drive version offers better grip, providing more stable starts and higher limits. In specialized testing, the rear-wheel-drive version's average fuel consumption reached approximately 11L/100km in our tests, slightly higher than the official figure of 9.6L, but considering the performance orientation, this fuel consumption is within an acceptable range. Braking performance is good, the brake pedal feels linear, and the car remains stable during emergency braking without significant nose-dive.
In terms of driving comfort, the sound insulation is quite good, with wind and road noise well-controlled during daily highway driving. Only during intense acceleration does the engine sound enter the cabin. The seats provide decent comfort for long drives, with satisfactory wrapping and support. The transmission is very smooth in Comfort mode, with almost no noticeable shift shock; in Sport mode, the shifts are quicker, but the shift shock becomes more apparent.
In summary, the 2023 BMW M3 Competition stands out for its core highlights: improved power over the previous model, excellent handling performance, and rich configuration options. Compared to its class rival, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S, the M3's inline-six engine has advantages in smoothness and sound, and it also offers a more competitive price. Among the two versions, the rear-wheel-drive variant is suitable for players who enjoy control and drifting, while the xDrive all-wheel-drive version is more suitable for daily use, especially safer in rainy or slippery road conditions. Overall, the M3 Competition balances daily usability with performance, making it ideal for performance car enthusiasts who value all-round capability or those looking for a car that can handle both family use and occasional spirited drives. If you're searching for a luxury performance sedan that combines practicality with performance, the 2023 M3 Competition is worth considering.
