For Malaysian consumers seeking a balance between high performance and SUV practicality, the midsize performance SUV segment has always been niche but with clear demand. It needs to meet the spatial requirements of daily commuting while also offering the adrenaline-driven thrill of driving on weekends. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ is a representative contender in this segment. It features a 4.0L V8 bi-turbo engine and an acceleration of 0-100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, while retaining the practicality of the GLC series. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this "brutal gentleman" can strike the perfect balance between performance and daily usability.

At first glance, the AMG GLC 63 S immediately stands out from the standard GLC model. The overall dimensions of the vehicle measure 4679mm×1930mm×1621mm, with a wheelbase of 2873mm, retaining the midsize SUV silhouette while brimming with performance-oriented details. The front face adopts AMG's signature vertical-slat chrome grille, complemented by large lower air intakes and a front lip spoiler, delivering strong visual impact. The side profile features sleek lines, with 21-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels equipped with wide tires (front: 265/40R21, rear: 295/35R21), further enhancing the sporty stance. At the rear, quad round exhaust tips with dual outlets and a diffuser design boldly declare its performance identity. The lighting system comes standard with LED headlights and daytime running lights, and the automatic headlight function is particularly practical for Malaysia’s variable weather, offering high visibility when illuminated.

Stepping inside, the interior maintains Mercedes' signature luxury and adds exclusive AMG elements. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with metallic strips and carbon fiber trim, offering exceptional tactile quality. The instrument cluster features Electroluminescent Analogue gauges. While it’s not fully digital, it provides clear readouts and real-time performance data such as RPM and turbo pressure. A HUD (Head-Up Display) is standard, projecting speed, navigation, and other information to enhance driving safety. The central display screen is of moderate size and runs Mercedes' COMAND system, which operates smoothly. The seats are electrically adjustable sports seats with memory function for the front row, offering excellent wrapping and support for dynamic driving. The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 split, and when folded, the luggage capacity expands from 550L to accommodate family trips or larger items. In terms of features, keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, independent rear air conditioning, 360-degree surround-view camera, and automatic parking assist are all included, maximizing daily convenience.

The core highlight of the AMG GLC 63 S lies in its powertrain. It is equipped with a 4.0L V8 bi-turbo engine, delivering a maximum output of 517PS and peak torque of 700N·m (as per official data, peak torque is achieved at 1750rpm). The engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. When switched to Sport+ mode, throttle response becomes extremely sharp, and during launch, the tires may produce slight slippage before the AWD system quickly kicks in to evenly distribute power to the ground. The 0-100 km/h acceleration is tested to be close to the official 3.7 seconds, providing a strong pushback sensation. Mid-range acceleration is equally powerful—when overtaking, pressing hard on the throttle prompts quick downshifts from the gearbox, delivering power on demand, with outstanding high-speed acceleration capability.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal dead zone, providing clear feedback of road conditions during spirited driving; the suspension system adopts a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, offering strong support and well-controlled body roll when cornering, giving the driver sufficient confidence. When dealing with the commonly bumpy roads in Malaysia, the suspension in Sport mode feels slightly stiff, but switching to Comfort mode can filter out most minor vibrations, balancing everyday comfort. The performance of the all-wheel-drive system is also very flexible, primarily rear-wheel-drive during normal driving to enhance driving fun; when encountering slippery road conditions, it automatically adjusts the power distribution to ensure stability.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.7L/100km; in actual driving, the fuel consumption is about 14-15L/100km under congested urban conditions, and it can drop to around 9L on highways. For a V8 performance SUV, this performance is as expected. Noise control is well done, with wind noise and tire noise being minimal during daily cruising. Only when the gas pedal is pressed hard does the roar of the V8 engine penetrate the cabin, creating a performance car atmosphere. The comfort of the seats is also evident during long drives, providing good support and preventing passenger fatigue.

In terms of safety features, the AMG GLC 63 S comes standard with 7 airbags, ABS anti-lock braking, vehicle stability control, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking, offering comprehensive safety features that provide ample protection for both drivers and passengers.

Overall, the 2018 AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ stands out for its "versatility" — it offers the ultimate performance of a V8 engine while retaining the practical space and luxury features of a mid-sized SUV. Compared with competitors such as the BMW X3 M or the Audi SQ5, its luxury feel and features are more prominent, while the V8 engine provides a more alluring sound and power reserve. This car is suitable for those who need the practicality of an SUV while pursuing a high-performance driving experience, such as middle-aged users with families who do not want to give up driving pleasure or young entrepreneurs who appreciate luxury and speed.

In conclusion, the AMG GLC 63 S 4MATIC+ is a performance SUV with "no significant shortcomings." It meets the needs of daily commuting and family trips and can also unleash its passion on the track or winding roads. It is the perfect combination of high performance and practicality.

As the owner of the 2018 AMG GLC 63 S, driving it in Malaysia is both thrilling and somewhat "conflicted"! Previously, I drove a regular GLC, but I upgraded to this for the 4.0T V8—the moment you're stuck in Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Bukit Bintang during the morning rush hour, a deep throttle roar can make Myvi drivers nearby turn their heads, instantly satisfying; on weekends when heading to the twisting roads of Genting Highlands, the 295 wide tires grip the road exceptionally well, cornering even sharper than my friend's Cayenne Turbo, 4MATIC+ is no joke. The exterior is a solid 5-star rating without a doubt, with the AMG package and 21-inch wheels, parked under the Petronas Twin Towers, the head-turning rate is maxed out. However, I’d deduct 1 point for the interior: the 2018 model still comes with a small-sized central screen, which feels a bit outdated compared to the large dual screens in the new C-Class, and under Malaysia's scorching heat, the Alcantara steering wheel tends to absorb sweat easily. But overall, this "performance SUV" handles Malaysia's road conditions with ease, balancing both family use and street-racing fun, absolutely worth the value!

I previously drove a regular GLC, but I switched to this 63S entirely because I was attracted by its exhaust sound and the explosive power of 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds—during the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, just a little gas easily leaves traffic behind. The low growl of the 4.0T V8 is more thrilling than any music. The exterior is exactly my style, with wide body fenders paired with 21-inch tires; parked under the Twin Towers, it gets full-on attention—definitely 5 stars. The Nappa leather interior and Burmester sound system feel very premium, though the central control screen occasionally lags, which deducts 1 point. Driving up the winding roads to Genting Highlands on the weekend, the 4MATIC+ traction is solid, but fuel consumption can reach 15L while climbing; then again, who cares about that when buying a performance car? The only minor downside is that the rear space can feel cramped for friends over 180cm, but it’s sufficient for daily use.

Previously, I was driving a regular SUV, and it always felt like something was missing. Switching to this GLC 63 S is like opening a whole new world! The 4.0T V8 engine makes it effortless to overtake with just a light press on the accelerator in Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, and the 4MATIC+ traction system stays rock solid even on rainy highways. The interior's AMG bucket seats offer incredible support, and during weekend trips to Genting Highlands with the family, the rear space comfortably fits three, while the trunk can handle a stroller plus camping gear. However, there are some drawbacks — the fuel consumption in city traffic shoots up to 15L, and refueling with RON 95 gas does hurt the wallet a bit. The 21-inch low-profile tires require extra caution when navigating Malaysia's bumpy roads. On the bright side, safety features are top-notch, with the active brake assist saving me once in the narrow alleys of Penang. Overall, it strikes a solid balance between raw performance and practicality, though you need to weigh the costs of maintenance carefully!

I previously drove a regular GLC, but switching to this 63S feels like it has a whole new soul! During the morning rush hour crawling along Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 4.0T V8 can be as quiet as a regular SUV, and the start-stop system is smooth and unobtrusive. On weekends, driving through Genting Highland roads, stepping hard on the accelerator produces a roar that instantly excites the front passenger, and the 0-100km/h acceleration in 3.7 seconds combined with the 4MATIC+ keeps the car firmly planted in the corners. The grip from the 21-inch tires is absolutely incredible. However, there are some drawbacks: the city fuel consumption frequently climbs to over 15L, and with Malaysia's rising fuel prices, it’s truly painful. The rear middle floor hump is too high, so the person sitting in the middle has to almost do a split. But every time I lock the car and look back at its muscular AMG styling, I feel it's all worth it—after all, in Malaysia, there aren’t many SUVs that blend performance and practicality as well as this one does.

Every morning rush hour squeezes between cars, the 4.0T power is responsive with every press, overtaking never needs waiting for an opportunity. Driving in heavy rain with 4MATIC+ feels very stable, just need to slow down over speed bumps with the 21-inch tires. Three buddies sitting in the back won't feel cramped, the 550L trunk can fit weekend camping gear, but with a fuel consumption of 10.7, refueling needs to be frequent~
