Specs

In Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market, coupe-style models have always attracted consumers who pursue individuality and value practicality with their unique design and balanced performance. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe GLE 400 4Matic Coupe AMG Line, as a representative model in this segment, has become the focus of many consumers with its AMG sport package-enhanced exterior, the performance of its 3.0L V6 engine, and its rich luxury configurations. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this car's actual performance in daily driving matches its positioning and whether its configurations can meet the needs of Malaysian users.

In terms of appearance, the coupe stance of this GLE Coupe is highly recognizable. The front face features a large-sized exclusive AMG Line star-patterned grille, paired with sharp LED headlamps on both sides, giving the overall visual a strong impact. The side profile showcases lines that start sloping downward from the B-pillars, smoothly transitioning to the rear and forming a typical fastback design. Coupled with 21-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, the sporty vibe is further enhanced. At the rear, a chrome trim strip running across connects the LED taillights on both sides, while the dual exhaust layout below the rear bumper and diffuser design emphasize its performance attributes. In terms of details, the AMG sports body kit surrounding the vehicle and the black plastic trims around the wheel arches give the car a more layered look.

Inside the cabin, the sense of luxury and technology is prominent. The center console is wrapped in a large area of soft-touch materials, paired with metallic accents and wood grain panels, which should meet the tactile standards for cars in this class. The instrument cluster adopts a traditional electronic illuminated analog design with clear information display, though it appears slightly outdated compared to modern fully digital instrument displays. The size of the central display is moderate; while it does not support touchscreen functionality, the operation through Mercedes-Benz's Comand control system feels smooth. In terms of configurations, the front seats support electric adjustments with a memory function, and the driver's seat is also equipped with lumbar support adjustment to effectively alleviate fatigue during long drives. The rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and power outlets, as well as a rear-row LCD screen to enhance passenger experience.

In terms of space performance, the vehicle's dimensions are 4918mm×2003mm×1719mm, with a wheelbase of 2915mm. The front-row seating space is spacious, and a 180cm tall person sitting inside has sufficient headroom and legroom. Although the rear space is slightly compromised in headroom due to the fastback design, it is still adequate for most adult passengers, and the legroom is quite ample. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 650L, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split fold; when folded down, the capacity can be further expanded to meet storage needs for daily shopping or short trips.

In terms of power, the car is equipped with a 3.0L V6 turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 338PS and a maximum torque of 480N·m. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. From the actual driving experience, the power output is smooth and strong. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.9 seconds. During daily driving, the startup is nimble, mid-range acceleration is powerful, and when overtaking, a deeper press on the accelerator results in quick downshifting by the transmission with responsive power delivery. The driving modes include Economy, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. When switched to Sport mode, throttle response becomes more sensitive, and the transmission's shift logic becomes more aggressive.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, this car’s steering is precise with minimal dead zone. The steering feels light and effortless during daily driving and gradually becomes heavier at high speeds, ensuring driving stability. The suspension system adopts a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned with a sporty orientation. It effectively filters out bumps on Malaysia's relatively uneven roads, while also providing sufficient support when cornering, keeping body roll within a reasonable range.

In the driving performance test, the focus this time was on fuel consumption performance. During comprehensive driving in daily city and highway conditions, the actual tested fuel consumption was roughly in line with the official figure of 8.7L/100km. This fuel consumption is acceptable for a mid-to-large coupe SUV equipped with a 3.0L V6 engine. Additionally, the braking performance of this car is excellent, with a linear brake pedal feel and a short braking distance, providing confidence for daily driving. In terms of noise control, the interior noise is well-managed when driving at speeds below 60km/h, with the primary source of noise coming from the tires, which can be heard on rough road surfaces. As the speed increases to 120km/h, wind noise also becomes more noticeable but remains within the reasonable range for vehicles in the same class.

Regarding configuration highlights, the car comes equipped with comprehensive safety features such as automatic emergency braking/forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control, which effectively enhance driving safety. Features like blind-spot assist, 360-degree panoramic view, and automatic parking also add considerable convenience to everyday driving. Compared to competitors like the BMW X6, this car is more affordable. Overall, this car offers balanced performance, combining ample luxury and comfort with a certain level of driving pleasure. Whether for family trips or occasionally enjoying the drive, this car is particularly suitable for families or young consumers who value luxurious comfort along with handling performance. If you’re looking for a mid-sized luxury SUV that's both practical and stylish, with a good balance between substance and style, this model is a worthy choice.
