2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper S Review

In Malaysia's B-Segment market, compact sporty cars have always had a dedicated following—they seek more excitement than regular commuter cars while still maintaining daily practicality. The 2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper S is a "characterful contender" in this niche, coming with a 195PS 2.0T turbocharged engine, firm handling, and iconic retro design. We got our hands on the actual car this time to see if, besides being "good-looking," it truly meets the needs of local consumers in terms of driving and usability.
Starting with the exterior, MINI's classic round headlights and vertical-slat front grille are instantly recognizable. The Cooper S version comes with a sporty body kit, including honeycomb air intakes on both sides of the front bumper and two raised lines on the hood, all hinting at its performance attributes. The side profile retains a compact short-wheelbase look, with 17-inch wheels paired with 205/45 R17 tires for a balanced proportion. At the rear, the LED taillights, also round in design, echo the front styling, while the dual tailpipes at the bottom clearly indicate that this is no ordinary MINI. The overall design maintains a retro aesthetic while accentuating its distinctiveness through sporty elements, making it a head-turner on the road.
Inside the car, the interior design is just as unique as the exterior: the round central console, airplane toggle-style air conditioning switches, and the ambient light ring around the central screen—all exude MINI's signature style. As for material quality, the top part of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch plastic, providing a satisfactory sense of premium feel. In terms of equipment, it comes with a multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, and front and rear parking cameras—all practical features. These configurations make daily use more convenient, especially for a compact car like the MINI. However, the manually adjustable front seats might feel inconvenient for users accustomed to power-adjustable seats.
In terms of space, the car measures 3850mm in length with a wheelbase of 2495mm. The front seats offer adequate space; passengers around 175cm tall will find enough headroom and legroom. However, the rear seats are quite compact, suitable for short journeys but uncomfortable for long rides. The 211L trunk capacity can fit two cabin-sized suitcases, making it sufficient for daily groceries or short trips. For larger items, you’ll need to fold down the rear seats. Regarding storage, the door panel compartments can hold water bottles, though the center console and glove box have limited space. Still, they can store small everyday items, and the front row is equipped with a 220V power outlet, making it convenient for charging devices.
The powertrain is the highlight of the Cooper S: a 2.0T four-cylinder turbocharged engine with a maximum power output of 195PS and peak torque available as low as 1350rpm, paired with a 7-speed DCT transmission. Acceleration is highly responsive, with the turbo kicking in early. Light pressure on the accelerator generates noticeable power output, with an official 0-100km/h time of 6.7 seconds. In practice, overtaking is easy, and highway acceleration is equally impressive. Switching to Sport mode increases the fun of driving, as gear shifts are delayed, RPMs remain higher, and power becomes instantly available. For daily driving, the normal mode is sufficient, offering smooth gear transitions and reasonable fuel consumption. The official combined fuel economy is 5.7L/100km, while our city driving tests showed approximately 6.5L/100km, and on the highway, it can drop below 5L. For a 2.0T model, these figures are quite commendable.
In terms of handling, the MINI's chassis is tuned to be on the stiffer side, with front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension. There is minimal body roll when cornering, and the steering is precise with little play, making it very agile to drive. This is especially enjoyable when weaving through city streets or driving on mountain roads, offering a pleasant "point-and-go" feeling. However, the stiff suspension has its drawbacks—vibrations are not completely filtered out when going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, and rear passengers may find the ride a bit jarring. The braking system features ventilated discs at both front and rear, providing quick braking response. You can feel the braking power as soon as you press the pedal, giving you confidence during daily driving.
In terms of ride comfort, the sound insulation is quite good. At highway speeds of 120 km/h, wind and road noise remain at an acceptable level without interfering with conversations inside the car. The seats offer great support and wrap-around comfort, and they’re supportive enough for long drives without causing back pain. However, adjusting the manually operated seats to a comfortable position does take some time. The fuel tank capacity is 44 liters, and combined with its fuel efficiency, a full tank can cover about 700 km, offering average range compared to others in its class, meaning you won’t need frequent refueling.
To summarize, the main strengths of the 2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper S are clear: iconic retro design, powerful performance, precise handling, and practical features. Compared to other sporty small cars in the same class, such as the Volkswagen Polo GTI, the MINI’s design stands out as more unique, and it offers a richer set of features. However, rear space and the seat adjustment mechanism are its shortcomings. This car is ideal for those seeking driving pleasure, who appreciate a unique design and also need something practical for daily commuting—such as young professionals or families looking for a "big toy" as a second car. It’s not a car suited for long-distance family trips, but if you want a fun-to-drive, attention-grabbing car that can handle daily tasks, the MINI Cooper S is a good choice.
To conclude, the 2018 MINI 3 Door Cooper S is a car where "personality outweighs practicality." Its strengths lie in performance and handling, and its design is highly distinctive, making it ideal for consumers who do not prioritize spaciousness but highly value the driving experience and aesthetic appeal. If you happen to be this type of person, then it’s worth considering.
