2019 Bentley Continental GT V8 Convertible Review

In the current ultra-luxury convertible GT market, there are not many models that can balance elegant design with everyday practicality. As a representative of ultra-luxury brands, the Bentley 2019 Continental GT V8 Convertible is clearly aimed at high-end users who seek "both daily commuting and weekend driving fun." The core selling points of this car are clear: Bentley's iconic sense of luxury, the robust power of the 4.0T V8 engine, and the unique experience provided by the convertible design. In this test drive, we focused on evaluating its actual performance under Malaysian road conditions to see if it can truly balance luxury comfort with driving performance.
In terms of exterior design, the 2019 Continental GT V8 Convertible continues the elegant lines of the family design language. The front adopts a large rectangular grille with chrome accents and Bentley's iconic round logo, ensuring high recognition. The side profile features smooth lines that extend from the A-pillar to the rear, outlining the silhouette of a coupe. The 21-inch multi-spoke wheels (as equipped in the test model) further enhance the sporty feel. The rear design is relatively simplistic, with LED taillights featuring a wraparound design that naturally integrates with the body lines, while the quad exhaust layout hints at its performance attributes. One of the highlights of this model is its soft-top convertible roof, which can be opened and closed at speeds below 50 km/h, a process that takes approximately 19 seconds. The smooth operation during opening and closing is commendable.
Stepping into the car, an overwhelming sense of luxury greets you. The interior is extensively wrapped in genuine leather, with finely textured leather covering the steering wheel, seats, and center console. Paired with wood trims and metal buttons, the cabin exudes the quality expected of an ultra-luxury car. The center console is neatly organized, featuring a 12.3-inch touchscreen that integrates multimedia, navigation, and vehicle settings, and the operating fluency is quite good. The front seats are equipped with electric adjustment and heating functions, offering excellent support and wrapping, ensuring comfort even for long-distance driving. As for rear space, while the car has a 2+2 seating layout, the rear legroom is relatively limited, making it more suitable for short trips. Regarding storage space, the trunk offers a capacity of 358L, which is sufficient for daily use, but care must be taken when fitting large suitcases due to size constraints.
In terms of power, the car is equipped with a 4.0T V8 twin-turbocharged engine, producing a maximum power of 550 horsepower and a peak torque of 770 Nm, paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 4.1 seconds, with a top speed of 333 km/h. During real-world driving, the power response is swift during the initial stage of acceleration; a light press on the accelerator delivers a strong sensation of acceleration. Mid- and high-speed acceleration is equally robust; a deeper push on the accelerator during overtaking will prompt the transmission to downshift quickly and deliver power directly. Driving modes include Comfort, Sport, and Custom. In Comfort mode, power delivery is relatively smooth and well-suited for daily commuting. In Sport mode, throttle response becomes sharper, and gear shifts occur faster, offering a more aggressive driving experience.
In terms of handling, the vehicle is equipped with adaptive air suspension. In Comfort mode, the suspension system effectively absorbs road imperfections; even when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, vibrations within the cabin are minimal. In Sport mode, the suspension stiffens, providing better support and controlling body roll well when cornering. The steering wheel offers moderate weight and precise handling, making it easy to drive. However, due to the large size of the car, extra attention is needed when making U-turns or parking in narrow spaces. As for fuel consumption, based on our tests, urban road conditions yield fuel consumption of approximately 15-18L/100km, while highway conditions see consumption around 10-12L/100km. For a 4.0T model, this fuel economy is within a normal range.
In terms of noise control, when the convertible top is closed, the interior sound insulation is excellent, with wind and road noise being effectively kept to a low level. When the convertible top is open, wind noise increases significantly at high speeds, but this is a common phenomenon for convertible models. The soft-top has good quality soundproofing materials, which offer decent quietness when closed.
Overall, the 2019 Bentley Continental GT V8 Convertible is a luxurious and high-performing convertible GT vehicle. Its advantages include: the luxurious quality of the Bentley brand, powerful performance, comfortable driving experience, and the unique pleasure brought by the convertible design. Its downsides are the relatively tight rear space and higher fuel consumption. This car is suitable for individuals who pursue a high-quality lifestyle, enjoy driving, and possess a certain level of financial capability. Especially on weekends or holidays, taking it for a drive to the seaside or mountains will undoubtedly bring a unique experience. If you're looking for an ultra-luxury convertible that is both suitable for daily use and enjoyable to drive, then this car is worth considering.
