2019 BMW 4 Series Coupe 420i Sport Review

The luxury coupe market in Malaysia has long been dominated by German brands. The 2019 BMW 4 Series Coupe 420i Sport, as a key model in this segment, has consistently attracted users who value driving quality with its classic coupe stance and balanced features. In this test, we focused on verifying whether its power response aligns with its sporty positioning and whether its daily practicality can meet the needs of small families.
From the front, the 2019 420i Sport continues BMW's classic kidney grille design. The grille is slightly wider than the contemporary 3 Series, and, combined with the three-section air intake below, enhances its sporty appeal. The side profile features a fastback design with a waistline that extends from the fender to the taillights. The 26° tilt angle of the C-pillar maintains the coupe's silhouette while preventing the rear headroom from being overly cramped. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt an L-shaped light bar design, which is highly recognizable when illuminated at night. A dual round exhaust layout further emphasizes its sporty attributes. The lighting system comes standard with LED light sources across the range, while the automatic headlights and front fog lights are well-suited to Malaysia's unpredictable weather, ensuring practicality.
Sitting inside, the interior predominantly features black as the main color, with the dashboard wrapped in soft-touch materials and accented with silver trim for a luxurious look. The central control screen is 6 inches in size, supports touch operation, and has average system smoothness, though basic functions such as navigation and Bluetooth connectivity are sufficient for daily use. The instrument cluster is an electroluminescent analogue type, providing clear displays of information such as speed and RPM. The front seats come standard with electric adjustment and memory functions, offering good support and ensuring comfort during long drives. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold feature, making it possible to accommodate longer items occasionally. In terms of space, the car measures 4638mm in length, 1825mm in width, and 1377mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2810mm. Front headroom provides approximately a fist and two fingers of space, while rear legroom is decent for its class. A passenger with a height of 175cm would have about a fist's distance between their knees and the front seat backrest. However, the sleek fastback design results in slightly cramped rear headroom, making it unsuitable for long-duration seating. Regarding storage, the trunk offers a capacity of 445 liters, which can comfortably fit two 28-inch suitcases. The front central armrest box and door storage compartments also provide sufficient space for daily use.
For performance, the 2019 420i Sport is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, producing a maximum power of 187PS and a maximum torque of 270N·m (official data), paired with an 8AT transmission. At start-up, the power response is quite lively, with a noticeable push-back feeling even with mild acceleration. Mid-to-high-speed acceleration remains strong; during overtaking, pressing the accelerator hard results in quick downshifts from the transmission and smooth power delivery. Three driving modes are available: ECO, Comfort, and Sport. In ECO mode, throttle response is slightly muted, making it suitable for daily commuting. In Sport mode, the steering becomes heavier, and power delivery is more immediate, catering to occasional driving excitement. In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise and has minimal play. The car maintains stable body posture during cornering. The suspension is tuned on the firmer side, providing clear road feedback. It absorbs road bumps effectively with damping that quickly filters out vibrations, striking a good balance between comfort and sportiness. Fuel consumption during our mixed road conditions test was approximately 6.2L per 100 kilometers, slightly higher than the official figure of 5.5L, but this is reasonable considering Malaysia's congested traffic conditions. Noise control is well-managed, with wind and tire noise at highway speeds remaining within an acceptable range, ensuring conversations inside the car are not affected.
Comparing the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe and Audi A5 Coupe of the same class, the 2019 model 420i Sport has advantages in terms of handling and value for money. Its official price is RM 351,800, which is slightly lower than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, and it comes with richer configurations, such as standard automatic parking and seat memory functions. However, its central control screen is relatively small, and the interior is less tech-savvy compared to newer models. Overall, this car is suitable for those who want the appearance of a coupe while needing a certain degree of practicality, such as young families or working professionals seeking a good driving experience.
In summary, the 2019 BMW 4 Series Coupe 420i Sport is a well-rounded luxury coupe that offers performance, handling, and practicality to meet daily needs. Although the interior design may lack a modern technological touch, its classic design and reliable performance remain its core strengths. If you are looking for a luxury two-door coupe in the Malaysian market that balances sportiness and practicality, this car is worth considering.
