2019 BMW 8 Series M850i xDrive Coupe Review

In the Malaysian luxury coupe market, models like the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe have long dominated, but the arrival of the 2019 BMW 8 Series M850i xDrive Coupe offers a new choice with stronger performance parameters and more balanced everyday practicality. The core selling points of this car include the 4.4T V8 engine's 3.7-second 0-100 km/h acceleration capability, the handling stability enhanced by the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and its uncompromised luxurious features and rear seat practicality. In this test drive, we focus on verifying whether it can balance "daily commuting comfort" with "occasional wild performance," making luxury coupes more than just “weekend toys.”
The exterior design of the 2019 M850i xDrive Coupe directly targets the “sporty luxury” positioning. The overall lines are smooth and low-slung, with a body length of 4851mm, width of 1902mm, and height of 1346mm, giving it a distinct coupe stance. The front fascia features BMW's signature kidney grille, which is larger than that of the standard 8 Series and filled with glossy black slats inside. Pairing this with the sporty three-section front bumper below makes the car look highly aggressive. The waistline on the side stretches from the front fender to the rear, and the 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels with front 245/35R20 and rear 275/30R20 wide tires further enhance the sporty feel. The rear LED taillights have a smoked finish, echoing the quad exhaust layout on both sides, providing high recognizability when lit. The overall design retains the exquisite feel of a luxury car without losing the tough features of a performance vehicle.
Entering the cabin, the balance between luxury and technology is well-executed. The dashboard is wrapped in soft leather, complemented by metal trims and piano black panels, ensuring a refined tactile experience in all reachable areas. The 10.25-inch touchscreen is tilted towards the driver, offering a clear operational logic and quick responsiveness; the fully digital instrument cluster displays navigation, power output, and other information, with the interface changing when switching driving modes, making it highly practical. In terms of features, the front seats support electric adjustment and memory functions, with excellent support that remains comfortable over long drives. Although the rear seats are a two-seater layout, the space is not cramped—passengers up to 175cm tall will still have about a fist’s worth of legroom, and they support a 50:50 split fold for added versatility. The trunk offers a capacity of 420L, which can accommodate two suitcases without issue. Standard features include dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a 220V power outlet, keyless entry/start, among others, which demonstrate attention to daily usability.
Dynamic performance is the core strength of this car. The 4.4T V8 twin-turbocharged engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 537PS and a peak torque of 750N·m. Paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission, a light press on the accelerator upon start unleashes a strong sense of acceleration, and the 3.7-second 0-100 km/h acceleration fully aligns with the positioning of a performance car. When switched to Sport+ mode, the transmission shifts more aggressively, downshifts respond faster, and overtaking only requires deep pressing of the accelerator for instant power delivery with virtually no delay. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system performs excellently in corners, with precise and responsive steering that has minimal play. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, providing drivers with ample confidence. The suspension system features a double wishbone at the front and multi-link setup at the rear, tuned for sportiness but not overly stiff. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly filters out vibrations, ensuring passenger comfort.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.4L/100km. During our actual test drive, it was about 12-13L/100km in urban conditions and could drop to around 9L on highways. Considering its power parameters, this fuel consumption performance is reasonable. Noise control is excellent, with wind and tire noise barely noticeable during high-speed driving. Engine noise only enters the cabin when the accelerator is pushed hard, and the sound is deep and rich without being noisy. For safety features, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard. The 360-degree panoramic camera and automatic parking function also make everyday parking more convenient, with overall safety and convenience being well addressed.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2019 BMW 8 Series M850i xDrive Coupe lies in its "balance between performance and comfort." Compared to the Porsche 911 in the same class, it offers more rear seat space and greater daily practicality; compared to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, it has superior power performance and handling. This car is suitable for performance enthusiasts who enjoy driving as well as for families needing a daily ride—it’s perfect for weekend mountain drives to enjoy the handling or for commuting to work and taking family trips without feeling cramped. If you’re looking for a luxury coupe that is “track-ready yet grocery-friendly,” this car is worth considering.
