In recent years, the luxury rugged SUV market in Malaysia has been heating up. Consumers seek both the distinctive appeal brought by classic off-road DNA and uncompromised daily driving comfort and technological features—this is where the 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 stands as a benchmark in this niche market. Not only does it retain the iconic boxy design of the G-Class, but also balances "off-road beast" and "luxury ride" through its AMG-tuned 4.0T V8 engine and upgraded intelligent features. We got our hands on the actual vehicle to evaluate its overall performance in urban commuting, highway cruising, and light off-road scenarios, to determine whether this combination of 'classic and performance' is worth the million-level budget.

At first sight, the boxy silhouette of the 2019 AMG G63 remains its most striking feature. Straight body lines, flared wheel arches, and trapezoidal wheel wells make it highly recognizable in traffic. The front face features an AMG-exclusive vertical chrome grille, paired with sharply contoured LED headlights. The daytime running lights are designed with a circular surround, creating a powerful visual impact when illuminated. The body side continues with a continuous waistline and exposed door hinges, while the 22-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels matched with 295/40 R22 tires further enhance its sporty feel. At the rear, the square LED taillights and the externally mounted spare tire with a chrome protective cover fully preserve the classic elements of the G-Class, and the quad exhaust outlets under the rear bumper distinctly signify its AMG performance identity.

Stepping inside, the interior has undergone a complete transformation compared to the previous model. The dashboard is wrapped in extensive Nappa leather, complemented by matte carbon fiber trims and metal buttons, striking a balance between luxury and sporty aesthetics. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and the 12.3-inch central touchscreen are designed as a connected display, integrated with the MBUX intelligent system that supports voice control and smartphone connectivity. The operational smoothness and display clarity are top-tier in the same class. For features, the front seats come with electrically adjustable sports seats with memory functions, offering excellent support and wrapping. The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 ratio, and the trunk capacity reaches 667L, which can be further expanded by folding the seats. Practical configurations include dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging for the front seats, 220V/230V power outlets, rain-sensing wipers, and keyless entry/start, all provided as standard, making daily use highly convenient.

Regarding space performance, the vehicle measures 4613mm in length, 1984mm in width, and 1969mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2890mm. The front row provides ample space, with about two fists of headroom for a passenger of 180cm in height after adjusting the seat position. The rear legroom is around two fists, and headroom is about one and a half fists; while not the most spacious in its class, it is sufficient for everyday family use. In terms of storage details, the door panel storage slots can accommodate two 500ml water bottles. The center armrest compartment features a refrigeration function, the front cup holders support heating/cooling, and the rear row is also equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB ports.

The powertrain is the highlight of the AMG G63—it is equipped with a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 engine that delivers a maximum power output of 593PS (6000rpm) and a maximum torque of 850N·m (2500rpm), paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. During daily driving in "Comfort" mode, the power output is relatively linear, with a light and smooth start. Accelerating from 80-120km/h requires just a firm press of the throttle, and the gearbox shifts smoothly without jolts. Switching to "Sport+" mode makes the throttle response more aggressive; the gearbox holds lower gears, and when fully accelerating, the thrust is intense. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is just 4.5 seconds, an astonishing figure for a 2.56-ton SUV.

The handling and chassis performance exceeded expectations. The combination of the front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear solid axle suspension, tuned by AMG, effectively filters out small bumps on urban roads. When passing speed bumps, the impact is kept within an acceptable range. During high-speed cornering, the body roll is well controlled, the steering is accurate, and it avoids the typical "boat-like" feel of large SUVs. In terms of off-road capabilities, the 241mm minimum ground clearance, three differential locks (front/center/rear), and low-speed four-wheel drive mode enable it to easily handle mild off-road scenarios such as muddy roads and cross-axle conditions. The full-time four-wheel-drive system's power distribution is also intelligent enough to get you out of trouble without much manual operation.

As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 13.2L/100km. During our test in urban traffic congestion combined with highway cruising (each accounting for 50%), the actual fuel consumption was approximately 15.8L/100km. Fuel consumption during highway cruising can drop to around 12L, which meets expectations for a large-displacement performance SUV. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise become somewhat noticeable at 120km/h on the highway, but engine noise is well-isolated. Overall, the cabin quietness is consistent with a luxury vehicle's positioning.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2019 AMG G63 lies in its "three uncompromises": it retains the classic off-road genes of the G-Class, features powerful performance tuned by AMG, and offers luxurious interiors and technology configurations to meet modern consumer demands. Compared to its peers, such as the Land Rover Defender 110 V8 or Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392, it stands out with its superior luxury appeal and brand premium, along with more comprehensive configurations.

This car is suitable for two types of buyers: first, wealthy enthusiasts who value the dual attributes of "classic + performance," allowing them to enjoy both daily luxurious comfort and occasional off-road adventures. The second group includes young consumers who prioritize brand distinction and head-turning appeal; the boxy design and AMG identity are enough to serve as social topics. However, if rear-seat space and fuel efficiency are your priorities, it may not be the best choice. But for those who appreciate the G-Class heritage and AMG performance, it is almost a "dream car."

In summary, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 is an all-round luxury performance SUV—its classic design remains timeless, it delivers powerful performance, offers luxurious features, and does not compromise on off-road capability. It may not be a car for everyone, but for those who understand it, every penny is well spent on "heritage" and "capability."

Previously I drove a regular SUV, but after switching to the G63, I finally understand what a "mobile fortress" truly is! The exterior gets a full 5 points without any hesitation. The boxy design turns heads all over the streets of Kuala Lumpur, even the attendant at the gas station couldn't help but take a second look. The interior gets 4 points. The dual-screen setup provides enough of a tech vibe, but the hard plastic seams are slightly noticeable. Performance gets 4 points as well. The 4.0T V8 dominates on the highway, overtaking effortlessly, though the start-stop system can be a bit sluggish during the morning rush hour jams. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and climbing uphill felt effortless. The noise from the 22-inch tires is a bit noticeable but still acceptable. Space is ample. The trunk fits a stroller and camping gear easily. As for fuel consumption, 13.2L is not a problem in Malaysia, especially considering the commanding presence it exudes!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. The heavy rain turned the mountain road into a bumpy and muddy mess. The 4.0T V8 of the G63 is indeed powerful, with its 4.5-second 0-100 km/h acceleration showing no sluggishness during climbs. The 241mm ground clearance easily handled the water-filled potholes without scraping the undercarriage. However, the 22-inch low-profile tires made the ride on the gravel road so bumpy that the kids in the back kept shouting "my butt hurts," as the solid axle suspension transmitted all the jolts. The Burmester sound system inside was good enough to drown out the rain, yet the wireless charging pad on the passenger side occasionally malfunctioned in the humid weather. I’d give it 4 points for these small issues. But when this boxy vehicle was parked at the orchard entrance, every tourist passing by turned to take pictures. A solid 5 points for its looks, no doubt, though the fuel consumption of 13.2L in city traffic made my wallet hurt as I watched the fuel gauge drop.

Last week, I took my family to the foot of Yunding Mountain for an outing. The heavy rain made the mountain road full of potholes, but the 4.0T V8 of the G63 easily flung the muddy ground behind with just a push on the gas pedal. The 4.5-second 0-100 km/h acceleration was thrilling during uphill climbs. However, the sharp turns caused the car body to sway, making my wife hold onto the handle tightly. Although the rear curtain airbags and knee airbags provide a sense of security, the body roll from the live axle rear suspension still deducts 1 safety point—after all, it's important to be steady when traveling with kids.

Previously, driving the X5 always felt like it lacked some "style." But after switching to the G63 and parking it on Jalan Bukit Bintang in Kuala Lumpur, the head-turning rate skyrocketed—the boxy design paired with 22-inch wheels gives it a tougher soul compared to competitors like the Range Rover Sport. A score of 4 for its exterior is well-deserved. The interior earns a solid 5: Nappa leather seats with memory function, dual 12.3-inch screens that remain smooth even under the blazing Southeast Asian sun, and the tactile feel of the center console buttons is exceptional. Safety gets a score of 4 because the active braking system occasionally misjudges at 120km/h on highways. However, with 7 airbags and full-time four-wheel drive, it stays rock solid on the rainy mountain roads of the East Coast. The downside? A fuel consumption rate of 13.2L isn't a big deal considering Malaysia's fuel prices, but the raised middle section in the rear makes it uncomfortable for passengers on long trips. Over the weekend, I took my family to Genting Highlands—hill-start assist and three differential locks made climbing steep inclines feel effortless. The trunk easily fits 3 suitcases plus a stroller, making it practical and stylish!
