2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA GLA45 AMG 4Matic Review

In Malaysia's compact performance SUV market, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA45 4Matic has been a popular choice for users seeking a "hot hatch" experience while requiring practicality — after all, it not only carries AMG's performance DNA but also retains the basic loading capabilities of an SUV. This time, we got our hands on the vehicle with the primary goal of verifying whether its performance lives up to the AMG badge, while also evaluating if its daily usability is compromised.
Starting with the exterior, the overall style features AMG’s signature sporty touches, which are not overly exaggerated but highly recognizable. The front features a large single-slat AMG grille paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, along with sporty bumper surrounds and side air intake designs, clearly signaling its performance orientation. The side profile is compact, with a height of 1474mm, slightly lower than the standard GLA, and the stance leans more toward a crossover than a traditional SUV, thanks to the 20-inch wheels and 235/40 R20 tires. At the rear, the quad-round exhaust pipes, a hallmark of AMG design, along with the delicately crafted LED taillights, offer good recognition when illuminated. The rear bumper diffuser-like decoration further enhances its sporty feel, making the overall exterior strike a balance between aggressive performance aesthetics and subtle sophistication.
Sitting inside the vehicle, the interior continues Mercedes-Benz’s family design language while incorporating AMG exclusive elements. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch material, complemented by metal trims and piano black panels, achieving a luxurious brand-level feel. The 8-inch touch infotainment screen operates smoothly, supporting basic multimedia and vehicle settings. The multifunctional steering wheel, embossed with an AMG logo, feels robust in hand, and the standard paddle shifters are made of metal with a crisp tactile feedback. In terms of features, the front seats are electrically adjustable, provide excellent support, and remain comfortable even for long drives. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold, which expands the trunk capacity from 421L to a larger space, sufficient for storing strollers or suitcases for daily needs. Dual-zone automatic climate control comes standard, with independent air vents for the rear seats. Additionally, the front row is equipped with a 220V power socket, catering to family usage needs in detail.
In terms of space, with a length of 4455mm and a wheelbase of 2699mm, it sits within the mainstream dimensions for compact SUVs. The front row offers ample space, with about a fist’s worth of headroom remaining for a 180cm passenger after seat adjustment. The rear legroom measures roughly two fists, with a headroom of one fist — not exceptionally spacious but adequate for daily family use. As for storage, door panel slots and the central armrest box are fairly practical, and the front cup holders come with limiters, showing thoughtful attention to detail.
Dynamic performance is the highlight of this model. It is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine producing a maximum power of 386PS, with peak torque delivered at 2250rpm. It is paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox and a full-time all-wheel-drive system. With an official 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.4 seconds, actual tests in Sport mode reveal a strong sense of acceleration with noticeable push-back when stepping on the gas pedal hard. The gearbox shifts extremely quickly with almost no lag. For daily commutes in Comfort mode, the power delivery becomes smoother, making it suitable for urban environments. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal slack, and body roll is well controlled during cornering. The MacPherson front suspension offers sufficient support, and paired with the all-wheel-drive system, it provides solid stability in turns, instilling confidence. The chassis tuning leans toward stiffness, and noticeable vibrations are transmitted into the cabin when navigating bumpy roads, which is a common trade-off for performance-oriented vehicles, rewarded with better handling feedback.
In terms of fuel consumption performance, the official combined fuel consumption is 8.5L/100km. In actual city driving, it is approximately 10-12L, while on highways, it can drop to 7-8L. For a 2.0T high-performance engine, this result is considered reasonable. As for noise control, the cabin is relatively quiet when driving at low speeds. Tire noise and wind noise increase at high speeds, but they remain within an acceptable range. The exhaust note becomes more robust in sports mode, aligning with the characteristics of a performance car.
To summarize, the core strengths of the 2019 AMG GLA45 4Matic are evident: powerful performance, precise handling, Mercedes-Benz's luxurious quality, and the retained practicality of an SUV. Compared to the same-class BMW X2 M35i or Audi SQ2, it has an advantage in terms of performance parameters and offers richer configurations. Although the price of RM 401,457 is not low, its overall product strength is commendable.
This car suits two types of buyers: one type is young users who pursue performance but need to balance family usage, enjoying driving fun on weekends while also being able to bring family members along in daily life; the other type is consumers who love luxury brand performance cars, as its brand appeal and performance can satisfy their needs. If you want a "family-useable hot hatch," the 2019 AMG GLA45 4Matic would be a great choice.
