The mid-size luxury SUV market in Malaysia has always been one of the most competitive segments. Consumers value not only the luxurious feel brought by the brand but also have clear demands for space practicality, technology features, and driving quality. As a popular contender in this class, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic AMG Line not only features a 3.0T mild hybrid system to enhance power efficiency but also comes standard with numerous intelligent driving assistance and comfort features. Can it strike a balance between luxury and practicality? In this test drive, we will focus on verifying its dynamic performance and its compatibility with daily usage.

From the exterior, the AMG Line package of this GLE indeed enhances its sporty feel. The front adopts a large-sized star-pattern grille, paired with a front bumper featuring chrome trim, making the overall design more aggressive compared to the standard version. The body side profile is sleek, with a waistline running through the car body from the A-pillar to the D-pillar. The 22-inch AMG alloy wheels paired with 285/40 R22 tires in the front and 325/35 R22 tires at the rear further enhance its visual tension. At the rear, the horizontally designed LED taillights are connected by a continuous chrome trim, and the dual exhaust layout of the rear lower bumper aligns with the sporty positioning of the AMG Line. The lighting system comes standard with LED sources, and the addition of automatic headlights and daytime running lights improves daily convenience.

Inside the cabin, the interior continues Mercedes’ luxurious design style with a dual 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel and infotainment display on the center console. These screens are powered by the MBUX intelligent interaction system, offering smooth operation and responsive performance in line with expectations. The multifunction steering wheel features shift paddles, supports electric adjustment, and is equipped with a memory function. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather; the front seats have electric adjustments and memory functions, while the rear seats also offer electric adjustment and can be split and folded down in a 60:40 ratio, enhancing spatial flexibility. In terms of materials, the dashboard and door panels are covered with soft materials and elegantly accentuated with metallic trims, which align well with its luxury positioning. As for features, keyless entry, a 360-degree panoramic camera, automatic parking, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and independent rear air conditioning are all standard, meeting everyday usage needs.

In terms of space, the vehicle measurements are 4924mm×1947mm×1772mm, with a wheelbase of 2995mm. These dimensions offer ample seating space for both front and rear passengers. When a 180cm tall passenger adjusts the front seat to a comfortable position, there's about a fist and two fingers of headroom remaining, along with sufficient legroom. Similarly, the rear seats accommodate a 180cm tall passenger with a fist of headroom remaining and more than two fists of legroom. Additionally, there’s almost no protrusion on the middle floor, ensuring the comfort of the middle passenger. For storage spaces, the door pockets, center armrest compartment, and front cup holders are all practical in size. The trunk has a standard storage capacity of 630 liters, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, meeting the needs of family outings or carrying large items.

In terms of performance, this GLE is equipped with a 3.0T V6 engine and a 48V mild hybrid system. The engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 372PS and a maximum torque of 500N·m, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.7 seconds. During actual driving, the mild hybrid system provides additional assistance during startup, making throttle response quick and minimizing turbo lag during low-speed driving. When switched to Sport mode, power delivery becomes more direct, and there’s ample power reserve for mid-range acceleration and overtaking. The gearbox demonstrates clear shifting logic and responsive downshifts. The official combined fuel consumption is 9.4L/100km, while actual test drives showed about 11L/100km in city conditions and approximately 8L/100km on highways, which meets expectations.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering is precise with minimal slack and moderate feedback strength, in line with the positioning of a luxury SUV. The suspension system uses a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort, but with improved support in sport mode. When traversing bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters vibrations, maintaining body stability while retaining some road feedback. At high speeds, the vehicle exhibits good stability, and body roll during cornering is well controlled. The addition of the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system enhances driving safety on slippery roads.

In terms of safety features, this car is equipped with 7 airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, and other comprehensive safety features. The attention to detail in everyday driving comfort is also commendable, with good control over wind and tire noise. When driving at high speeds, cabin noise does not interfere with normal conversations. The seats offer moderate support and cushioning, making long periods of sitting less tiring.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic AMG Line lie in its luxurious interior atmosphere, abundant tech features, ample space, and balanced performance in power and handling. Compared to competitors in the same class, it boasts higher configuration levels, particularly the electrically adjustable rear seats and dual-screen system, which provide a certain level of competitiveness among models at the same price range. This car is suitable for families emphasizing luxury and comfort while also meeting the needs of consumers seeking dynamic performance.

In summary, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic AMG Line is a well-balanced luxury mid-size SUV that strikes a great balance between luxury, space, performance, and features. It is ideal for consumers who need a vehicle that caters to both family use and personal driving enjoyment.

Heavy rain and waterlogged slopes, 4MATIC feels as stable as if glued to the road, instantly boosting the sense of security!

This GLE 450 AMG Line has been driven for two years. The start-stop system operates smoothly without jerks during congested commutes, and the 4MATIC system is very stable when driving through flooded roads during heavy rain. My parents feel comfortable during long-distance rides in the backseat without complaining about fatigue. However, the 22-inch tires require slower driving over speed bumps. Fuel consumption is around 11 liters per 100 kilometers in the city, but the power is responsive and gives great confidence when overtaking!

This GLE 450 AMG Line has been driven for more than three years. It never slips when passing through waterlogged roads on rainy days. For commuting and overtaking, it accelerates swiftly with just a push of the pedal. There's no problem sitting in the rear with legs crossed, but with 22-inch tires, you need to slow down over speed bumps. The fuel consumption in the city is around 12 liters, which occasionally feels costly, but the driving stability is truly impressive.

Driving on mountain roads in the rain, the wood trim and ambient lighting in the interior are really so soothing, but the safety assistance is occasionally a bit sluggish.
