2019 Porsche Cayenne Review

The mid-sized luxury SUV market has always been the focus of attention for high-end consumers in Malaysia. It needs to meet the practicality of daily household use while balancing brand appeal and driving pleasure. As one of the benchmark models in this segment, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne attracts many buyers with its positioning that combines sporty genes with luxurious features. This time, we got the 3.0T version for a test drive, with the main goal to verify whether it can find the perfect balance between "Porsche's driving feel" and "SUV's practicality."
From a distance, the 2019 Cayenne continues the family-style sporty design, with smooth and muscular lines and no excessive redundant elements. The front face features a large air intake grille paired with sharp LED headlamp clusters on both sides, giving it a high degree of recognition. The four-point daytime running lights inside the headlights are iconic Porsche elements, creating a striking visual effect when illuminated. The side profile of the car is delineated by a waistline running from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 21-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, further enhancing its sporty stance. At the rear, the LED light bar echoes the styling of the front, and the spoiler automatically rises at high speeds, improving aerodynamic performance while adding to the sporty vibe.
Opening the door, the luxury and technology within the interior are immediately striking. The center console is covered with a large amount of soft-touch materials, offering a refined feel. The iconic Porsche five-dial instrument cluster retains the design of mechanical gauges with a 7-inch LCD screen in the center that can display navigation, vehicle status, and other information, blending traditional and modern elements. The 12.3-inch central touch screen serves as the core of the interior, equipped with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. It supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with smooth operation and rich functionality. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, and the front seats offer 14-way electric adjustment, including lumbar support and memory functions, ensuring comfort even during extended periods. Rear seats are also comfortable, with ample legroom—providing about two fist-widths of space even for passengers up to 180cm tall. The trunk offers a capacity of 772L, which can be expanded to 1710L by folding down the rear seats, fully meeting the needs of family outings or transporting large items.
In terms of performance, this Cayenne is powered by a 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine delivering a maximum output of 340PS and peak torque of 450N·m, paired with an 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. During daily driving, the engine's power delivery is smooth, and peak torque can be achieved as early as 1340rpm, resulting in responsive and effortless acceleration. Switching to Sport mode noticeably enhances the throttle sensitivity, and the transmission shifts become more aggressive. Pressing the accelerator deeply provides a strong pushback sensation, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 6.2 seconds, and the real-world experience matches the data. At high speeds, the engine's RPM remains around 2000, ensuring ample power reserves for overtaking, which can be done with a light press of the accelerator without concerns over lack of power.
Handling is Porsche's strong suit, and this Cayenne is no exception. The steering wheel provides precise control with minimal play. It feels light and effortless at low speeds and becomes more stable at high speeds, giving the driver plenty of confidence. The chassis features adaptive air suspension that supports adjustments for height and stiffness. In Comfort mode, the suspension filters out most road bumps, providing a smooth ride quality. Switching to Sport mode stiffens the suspension, reducing body roll and maintaining a stable posture during cornering. The braking system also performs impressively, with the brake pedal offering linear feedback and ample stopping power. During emergency braking, the body remains stable without noticeable nosedive behavior.
In terms of fuel consumption, we tested it on mixed road conditions (60% urban roads and 40% highways) for a week, with an average fuel consumption of approximately 10.5L per 100 kilometers. Considering its 3.0T engine displacement and SUV body size, this result is considered above average among models in the same class. The noise control is also commendable, with wind noise and tire noise well isolated on highways, ensuring that in-car conversations or music enjoyment are not affected.
Overall, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne delivers outstanding performance in terms of luxury, power performance, and handling. Compared to competitors like the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE in the same class, it stands out more with its sporty DNA and offers greater driving pleasure. At the same time, it does not fall short in terms of interior luxury and practicality, making it a relatively high-value option among luxury mid-sized SUVs. This car is suitable for consumers who value brand appeal and driving enjoyment while also needing to consider family practicality—be it for daily commutes, weekend getaways, or occasional bursts of driving passion, it handles them effortlessly.
As a mid-sized luxury SUV under the Porsche brand, the 2019 Cayenne perfectly intertwines "everyday practicality" with "driving enjoyment." Not only does it showcase Porsche's signature sporty performance, but it also embodies the comfort and practicality expected of a luxury SUV. It is a well-rounded model with balanced performance. If you are looking for a luxury SUV that combines brand, performance, and practicality, the 2019 Cayenne is worth considering.
