2020 BMW 2 Series 218i Gran Coupe Review

In recent years, the luxury compact four-door coupe market has been gradually heating up. Young consumers want to enjoy the streamlined design of a sporty coupe without sacrificing the practicality needed for daily commuting. The 2020 BMW 218i Gran Coupe is precisely aimed at this niche market. As one of the rare front-wheel-drive four-door coupes under the BMW brand, it attracts attention with its compact body paired with frameless doors while combining the brand’s iconic driving pleasure with household utility. This time, we acquired the actual car and focused on testing its performance in city commuting, highway cruising, and daily household scenarios to see whether this "small BMW" can truly balance individuality with practicality.
The exterior design of the 218i Gran Coupe continues BMW's sporty genes while incorporating the unique fastback lines of the Gran Coupe. The front features the classic kidney-shaped grille paired with sharp LED headlights, creating a very aggressive visual impression. The air intakes on both sides of the front bumper are flatly shaped, further enhancing the sporty feel. A highlight of the side view is the sleek and naturally flowing fastback curve extending from the A-pillar to the rear. Combined with 16-inch multi-spoke wheels, it maintains the dynamic character of a coupe without being overly exaggerated. At the rear, the compact trunk lid is complemented by a dual-exit exhaust layout, along with LED taillights, giving the overall design a high level of recognition, especially when the taillights are illuminated, making it easy to identify as a BMW vehicle.
Once inside, the layout of the interior is immediately noticeable — a typical BMW design, with the center console oriented towards the driver, making it very convenient to operate. In terms of materials, the upper part of the center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented by silver trims, offering a sense of luxury despite being an entry-level model. Core features include a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster with clear visuals and rich information that can switch between different display modes; the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment screen is equipped with the iDrive system, supporting gesture control and voice recognition, with quick response and intuitive operation logic. As for seats, both the driver and the front passenger seats feature electric adjustments, providing balanced cushioning and good support. The rear seats adopt a 40:20:40 split-folding design, allowing flexible expansion of trunk space. Regarding details, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, and keyless entry are all equipped, ensuring daily convenience.
In terms of space performance, the car’s dimensions are 4526mm×1800mm×1420mm, with a wheelbase of 2670mm, achieving typical levels for a compact car. The front-row seating space is ample, with passengers of 175cm height having more than one fist of head and legroom. Rear seating space is average, with passengers of the same height having around two fists of legroom. However, the fastback design slightly limits headroom, though it’s still sufficient for daily use. As for storage space, the trunk has a regular capacity of 430L, enough to fit two 28-inch suitcases, and can further expand by folding down the rear seats, meeting household needs with no issues. There are also plenty of storage compartments inside the cabin, including the center armrest console and door pocket storage, which are both practical for storing phones, water bottles, and other small items.
Powertrain: The 218i Gran Coupe is equipped with a 1.5T three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum output of 140PS and peak torque of 220N·m. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and adopts a front-wheel-drive layout. In real-world driving, the power response is dynamic during initial acceleration; a gentle press on the accelerator is enough to feel the power output, making following traffic and overtaking in urban areas effortless. Switching to Sport mode further enhances throttle sensitivity and speeds up gear changes. Although the push-back sensation is not very strong, it is sufficient to meet the daily driving demands for sportiness. However, during idling, a slight vibration from the three-cylinder engine can still be felt — this is a common trait of three-cylinder engines. BMW has done a commendable job in mitigating it, but it is still noticeable.
Handling: As a BMW model, the 218i Gran Coupe performs well in this regard. The steering is precise with minimal slack and a moderate self-centering force, providing drivers with ample confidence during cornering. The chassis features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned with a sporty bias but without being overly stiff. While driving in urban areas, the suspension absorbs most of the shocks from speed bumps or uneven roads, ensuring passenger comfort. When making high-speed turns, the body roll is well-contained, and stability is commendable. Regarding brakes, the braking response is sharp, the pedal feel is linear, and the stopping distance is short, giving a sense of safety.
Fuel consumption: The official combined fuel consumption is 5.9L/100km. In our test, city driving under congested conditions yielded about 7.2L/100km, while fuel consumption during highway cruising was approximately 5.5L/100km. This performance meets expectations and is quite economical for a luxury compact car. Regarding noise control, some wind and tire noise can be heard during highway driving, but it remains within an acceptable range and does not affect communication between passengers inside the car. The engine noise becomes more pronounced during aggressive acceleration but diminishes once the revs stabilize.
Overall, the key advantages of the 2020 BMW 218i Gran Coupe are apparent: first, the design, with its fastback styling and frameless doors, strikes a balance between individuality and practicality. Second, the features, such as the full digital instrument cluster, touchscreen central display, and electric seats, are comprehensive — even surpassing some competitors in the same class. Third, the handling showcases BMW's excellent tuning expertise, offering both everyday usability and the enjoyment of occasional sporty driving. Compared to its rivals, such as the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Audi A3 Limousine, the 218i Gran Coupe is priced more competitively (RM 228,800) without falling behind in terms of features, making it a highly cost-effective option.
The target demographic for this car is clear: young consumers who want the prestige of a luxury brand alongside the practicality of a four-door coupe. It is primarily intended for city commuting and occasional weekend getaways, and it can also accommodate family outings when needed. If you value design, features, and handling but don't want to spend too much on a luxury brand, the 218i Gran Coupe is a great choice.
In conclusion, the 2020 BMW 218i Gran Coupe is a well-rounded luxury compact four-door coupe. It has no significant shortcomings and strikes an excellent balance between design, features, handling, and practicality. For young consumers chasing personality and quality, this car is worth considering.
