The luxury executive sedan market in Malaysia has always revolved around a "balance of comfort, technology, and performance." As the flagship plug-in hybrid of the brand, the 2020 BMW 740Le xDrive enters this segment with its combination of a 3.0T inline-six engine and electric motor, long wheelbase, and a full suite of tech features. Its core selling point directly targets the pain point of many high-end buyers who want to maintain the prestige of a luxury executive car while not compromising on the cost of daily use. In this test drive, we focus on verifying three questions: Is the hybrid system smooth in its actual performance? Does the long-wheelbase space truly suit business scenarios? Can the full suite of features translate into a tangible luxury experience?

From the exterior, the 2020 BMW 740Le xDrive retains the steady demeanor of a large BMW sedan. The front grille features a large kidney design with active air flap control, ensuring both brand recognizability and aerodynamic performance. The LED angel eye headlights are sharp in design, and the standard automatic headlights and front fog lights maximize practicality during tropical rain and foggy weather. The side profile of the body is sleek, with a length of 5260mm complemented by a 3210mm wheelbase, which hints at the spaciousness of the rear seating. Chrome trims along the door and the 19-inch multi-spoke wheels enhance the refined feel. At the rear, the L-shaped LED taillights echo the headlights, while the dual exhaust outlets with chrome trim retain the flagship vehicle's imposing vibe. The overall design avoids excessive flamboyance, with every detail serving the purpose of reinforcing the "executive-level gravitas," making it unmistakably look like a luxury car.

Sitting inside, the Nappa leather-covered dashboard and door panels provide an immediate tactile sense of luxury, while wood grain trims ensure the overall style doesn't feel too cold. The 10.25-inch touchscreen central control display is responsive, and the iDrive system's logical interface ensures quick adaptation even for first-time users. The front seats come standard with electric adjustment, memory, heating, and ventilation functions, offering a wide range of adjustments so that even a 180cm tall driver can find a comfortable posture. The rear seats are the real highlight—electric adjustable seats with massage functions; the massage feature significantly alleviates fatigue during long rides. The central armrest's BMW Touch Control allows direct adjustment of the air conditioning, seat settings, and multimedia. Rear independent air conditioning and sunshades further enhance the business-oriented traits. Regarding space, the 3210mm wheelbase completely delivers its advantage, with rear legroom exceeding two fist lengths and headroom with an extra fist of space; even passengers as tall as 190cm won't feel cramped. The trunk has a capacity of 420 liters, sufficient for storing two 28-inch suitcases for daily use. However, the battery occupies some space, making it less expandable than the purely gasoline-powered version.

In terms of power, the 3.0T inline-six engine delivers a maximum of 286PS, while the electric motor contributes 113PS, providing ample combined output. For daily commuting, the pure electric mode with an official range of 46km essentially covers short-distance urban trips, with a linear accelerator response and a quiet, smooth start. Switching to hybrid mode, both the engine and electric motor work together during rapid acceleration. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.1 seconds is indeed fast, and when flooring the accelerator for overtaking, the power reserve is ample with no noticeable lag. The 8-speed automatic transmission features intelligent shifting logic, making gear changes almost imperceptible whether during low-speed maneuvering or high-speed cruising. Regarding handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play. Even though the car is over 5 meters long, it remains agile during lane changes. The double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension are tuned for comfort, effectively filtering out small road vibrations, and even when passing over speed bumps, there is no harsh jarring impact. However, body roll is more noticeable in high-speed cornering compared to sports models, as its positioning is that of an executive sedan. The fuel efficiency is impressive, with an electric mode energy consumption of about 15kWh/100km and a measured hybrid mode combined fuel consumption of approximately 3.2L/100km, which is nearly half that of similarly classed gasoline-only models. Noise control is well executed, with wind and tire noise remaining unobtrusive even at 120km/h on the highway, and the sound of the engine when it engages is deep and unobtrusive, allowing for undisturbed in-car conversations.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2020 BMW 740Le xDrive are very clear: First, the hybrid system balances power and energy consumption, addressing the "gas guzzler" issue of luxury cars. Second, the rear seat configuration and space fully meet business needs, with details like massage seats and rear control screens being more practical compared to the plug-in hybrid version of the Mercedes S-Class in the same class. Third, it comes with fully equipped safety and technology features as standard, including 360-degree cameras, HUD, Harman Kardon sound system, etc., making it stand out in terms of cost-performance among luxury executive cars. However, it does have minor drawbacks, such as a relatively short all-electric range and reduced trunk space due to the impact of the battery.

This car is most suitable for two types of users: One type is business owners who often need to host business clients, as the luxurious rear seat configurations directly reflect their status; the other type is families who value quality of life, as the hybrid system can reduce daily usage costs, and the long-wheelbase space can easily accommodate family trips. Overall, the 2020 BMW 740Le xDrive is a luxury executive plug-in hybrid car with "no obvious weaknesses." With its smooth power delivery, thoughtful configurations, and balanced performance, it provides high-end buyers with a pragmatic choice.

Pros
Harman Kardon audio delivers excellent sound quality and can effectively mask external noise
Leather seats with massage function enhance comfort during rides
Active braking system responds promptly, effectively avoiding rear-end collisions
Cons
Hybrid mode lacks sufficient range on mountain roads, and fuel consumption increases significantly after power depletion
Long body makes it inconvenient to pass on narrow roads, and the 360-degree camera occasionally becomes blurry on rainy days
The front design appears slightly outdated, and some users are not highly satisfied with the exterior appearance

Last week, I took my family to the foothills of Genting Mountain to shelter from the rain but got stuck in a traffic jam halfway up the mountain. In hybrid mode, the battery range of 46km was far from enough to traverse the winding mountain roads, and the fuel consumption shot from 2.8L to over 5L after depleting the battery. However, the Harman Kardon sound system drowned out the sound of the rain, and the massage function of the leather seats kept me from feeling annoyed. Suddenly, the car in front braked hard, and the automatic braking system stopped the car with a "thud," startling me but indeed saving me from a rear-end collision. The interior is impeccable; the wooden accents and ambient lighting created a cozy atmosphere on that rainy day. Still, this hybrid system feels slightly inadequate for mountain roads in Malaysia.

In hybrid mode, cornering is extremely stable! The genuine leather seats wrap around your waist, making traffic jams less frustrating~

This 740Le has been driven for more than two years. The hybrid electric mode is very reassuring during traffic jams, and the 3.0T engine combined with the motor provides plenty of power for overtaking. The rear boss seat comes with a massage function, and the ventilated seats are lifesavers in summer! However, the body is too long, so passing on narrow roads requires caution, but the 360-degree camera can back you up. Overall, very satisfied.

Last week, when driving family to the foothill of Genting Highlands, heavy rain made the mountain road slippery. The xDrive all-wheel drive gripped the road steadily, and the vehicle stability control intervened promptly during cornering with no skidding at all. However, the 360-degree camera occasionally became blurry in rainy conditions, so I deducted 4 points for safety. The car is over 5 meters long, and the lane-keeping assist was a great help in traffic jams. However, the front-end design looks slightly outdated, so I gave 4 points for the exterior. In hybrid mode, the fuel consumption is 3.1L, slightly higher than the official figure. The all-electric range is sufficient for city commuting, which is quite reassuring.
