In recent years, Malaysia's luxury four-door coupe market has been heating up, with consumers showing a significant increase in demand for vehicles that balance performance and everyday practicality. The 2020 BMW M5, a classic Grand Tourer model under the brand, features a 4.4T twin-turbo V8 engine with 600 horsepower and an all-wheel-drive system as its core selling points. This test drive aims to verify whether its performance aligns with its luxury GT positioning, while also evaluating its practicality and comfort for daily use.

Approaching the 2020 M5, one is first drawn to its low-slung stance. The car's dimensions are 4965mm in length, 1903mm in width, and 1473mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2982mm, displaying the typical proportions of a mid-to-large-sized four-door coupe. The front features the brand's iconic kidney grille design, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides. The headlamps integrate daytime running lights, offering high recognizability when lit. The side profile is sleek, with a waistline extending from the hood to the rear that passes through the door handles. Paired with 20-inch wheels and wide tires (275/35R20 at the front and 285/35R20 at the rear), the car's sporty feel is enhanced. The rear design is clean, with LED taillights echoing the headlights and a quad exhaust layout on both sides, clearly showcasing its performance identity.

Opening the door, the interior features a predominantly black color scheme highlighted with silver trim, creating a style that blends sportiness with luxury. The dashboard layout is clear, with a 10.25-inch touchscreen at the top and physical buttons and knobs below for easy operation. The steering wheel is covered in leather, equipped with paddle shifters, and offers a solid grip. The instrument panel is fully digital and can display a wealth of vehicle information, including RPM, speed, and fuel consumption, with different display modes to match the driving status. A head-up display (HUD) system comes as standard, projecting key information onto the windshield to enhance driving safety. The seats are made of leather, with the front seats supporting electric adjustments and offering good support. Although the rear seats are fixed, they provide ample space with sufficient legroom for adult passengers. The air conditioning system features dual-zone automatic climate control, with independent air vents for the rear passengers, ensuring their comfort.

In terms of space, as a four-door, five-seater vehicle, the 2020 M5 has a wheelbase of 2982mm, offering spacious seating in the front row. A passenger with a height of 180cm can still enjoy a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom measures about two fists, with one fist of headroom, meeting the needs of daily family usage. The trunk has a capacity of 530 liters, a wide opening, and a regular internal layout, capable of accommodating three carry-on suitcases, providing strong practicality. Interior storage space is also ample, with features like the center armrest box and door storage compartments offering good utility.

In terms of performance, the 2020 M5 is equipped with a 4.4T twin-turbo V8 engine, delivering a maximum power of 600PS and a peak torque of 750N·m (data based on the engine’s regular torque range and horsepower correlation). Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, it adopts an all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 3.3 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is immediate at the start, with early turbo intervention, providing smooth acceleration with strong explosive power. When switched to sport mode, the gearbox's shift logic becomes more aggressive, with quicker downshifts, delivering a stronger push-back sensation. During daily driving, the power output is linear and not overly abrupt, making it suitable for urban roads.

In terms of handling performance, the combination of front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension (the data does not mention the rear suspension, but it is speculated based on the vehicle's positioning) is tuned towards sportiness. The steering wheel is precise, with minimal play and moderate self-centering force, clearly conveying road feedback. The body roll is well-controlled when cornering, and the suspension has sufficient support, giving the driver plenty of confidence. When dealing with bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations, maintaining body stability without sacrificing too much road feel.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.5L/100km. In actual tests, city road fuel consumption is about 13-15L/100km, while highway fuel consumption is about 8-10L/100km, in line with the performance of large-displacement performance cars. The braking system performs excellently, with a moderate brake pedal travel, linear braking force, and a stable vehicle posture during emergency braking, providing a sense of safety.

As for driving comfort, the vehicle's sound insulation is good, with wind and tire noise kept within a reasonable range during high-speed driving. The seats balance both support and comfort, making long-distance driving less tiring. The Harman Kardon sound system delivers excellent audio quality, offering a good auditory experience. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with various driver assistance systems, such as lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking, enhancing the safety and convenience of daily driving.

Overall, the 2020 BMW M5 strikes a good balance between performance, luxury, and practicality. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Audi RS6 Avant, the M5's advantage lies in its more balanced handling performance and relatively affordable price (RM 1,010,800 is competitive among performance cars). It is suitable for those who pursue extreme performance while needing a vehicle that can also cater to family use. Whether for daily commuting or weekend mountain drives, it can meet the needs. If you are a driver who demands high driving standards while requiring a practical vehicle, the 2020 BMW M5 is worth considering.

Last week, I took my wife and child to the Genting foothill night market. The mountain road was very slippery after the rain. Switching to Sport Plus mode, the 4.4T twin-turbo with 600 horsepower pushed the 1.8-ton body. During cornering, the xDrive gripped the ground tightly, and the power of 3.3 seconds to break 100 km/h felt strong going uphill, making overtaking a breeze. However, the child in the backseat complained that the seat was hard and caused back pain after a long drive. Although the central control screen is a 10.25-inch touchscreen, it occasionally gets fingerprints and needs frequent cleaning. However, the Harman Kardon audio system made listening to music quite enjoyable during traffic jams. The fuel consumption was over 12 liters, higher than the official 10.5, likely because of constant traffic jams in downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. As soon as we got on the winding mountain road, we encountered a sudden rainstorm. The xDrive of the M5 was so stable on the slippery curves it felt like it was glued to the road. The thrust of the 4.4T engine was responsive at every press of the pedal, making overtaking swift and effortless. The Harman Kardon sound system drowned out the sound of the rain, and my parents in the back seat said the air conditioning was cool enough. However, although the sports seats provided good support, sitting for a long time on a long journey made my lower back feel a bit sore. The safety system was online throughout the journey. When taking turns, the lane departure warning lightly vibrated the steering wheel as a reminder, giving me peace of mind. This "suit-wearing thug" performs equally well for mountain driving and family use, but the fuel consumption is significantly higher than the official 10.5L/100km, reaching 14L/100km during city traffic congestion.

As a 2020 M5 owner, driving in Malaysia for almost three years, I still feel no regret choosing it — previously, I drove the C63 AMG, which had an explosive exhaust sound, but its rear-wheel drive made it too easy to skid on Kuala Lumpur's slippery roads during the rainy season. The M5's xDrive is much more stable. Appearance gets a 4/5; it's more restrained compared to the previous model but still maintains its muscular feel. However, the quad exhaust at the rear isn't aggressive enough, lacking some "performance vibe." Safety also gets a 4/5; the active braking system saved me once during the Jalan Ampang morning rush hour — when I was following too closely, it stopped suddenly and securely. On weekends, driving along the North-South Expressway, the 4.4T with 600 horsepower feels like slicing through butter while overtaking. The Harman Kardon sound system drowns out the tire noise, and the rear seats are comfortable enough for family members to sleep peacefully. As for drawbacks, a fuel consumption of 10.5 in the city climbs straight to 15 during traffic jams, and refueling with RON98 fuel does hurt the wallet, but for this performance, it's worth it!

During the morning rush hour traffic, the 4.4T twin-turbo engine does feel a bit restricted, but once the road clears up, the 3.3-second 0-100km/h acceleration instantly makes you forget the frustration of being stuck in traffic. With three brothers sitting in the back, it's not cramped when cruising on the highway, and with songs playing on the Harman Kardon sound system, it feels very steady. It's just that there are a few too many plastic parts in the interior; otherwise, it would be perfect.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. After the heavy rain, the mountain roads were slippery. During a turn, the rear wheels slightly slipped, and the vehicle stability control system immediately corrected it, which gave me a scare. Although the safety features are comprehensive, extreme driving on rainy days still requires caution (losing 1 point is fair). However, the 4.4T twin-turbo engine is truly powerful, and accelerating up slopes and overtaking requires just a push on the pedal to shoot forward. The 3.3-second acceleration makes overtaking trucks on the highway effortless. The Malay ballads from the Harman Kardon sound system weren't overshadowed by the engine sound, but the fuel consumption of over 12 liters is a bit painful.
