2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC Coupe 43 4MATIC Coupe Review

The luxury mid-size SUV market in Malaysia has always been a fiercely contested arena among major brands. Consumers not only value brand appeal but also practicality and driving pleasure, which happens to be the core advantage of the coupe SUV segment. This time, I test-drive the 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC Coupe 43 4MATIC Coupe, positioned as a luxury sporty coupe SUV, with its key selling points being the AMG-tuned 3.0T V6 engine, coupe-style design, and Mercedes' signature luxury features. I will focus on its design, space, and driving experience to see if it meets the local consumers' demand for "having it both ways."
In terms of appearance, this car can be distinguished from the standard GLC at a glance. The front end features the AMG family’s single-slat vertical-bar grille, paired with large air intakes in the lower bumper, exuding a strong sporty vibe. The two contour lines on the hood extend from the A-pillar to the grille, enhancing the sense of power. The side profile showcases the hallmark of coupe SUVs, with a roofline that slopes down from the B-pillar, forming a smooth fastback shape while retaining muscular contours over the front and rear wheel arches. It is equipped with 19-inch AMG alloy wheels (20-inch wheels available for certain models), achieving a visual balance of low stance and SUV solidity. The rear design feels more compact, with a roof spoiler complementing the small ducktail under the rear window. The quad round exhaust outlets on both sides are classic AMG elements, while the LED taillights with blacked-out finish offer high visibility when lit. The lighting system comes standard with full LED functionality, with automatic headlights and responsive daytime running lights that adapt precisely to the region’s variable weather conditions.
Stepping inside, you are greeted with Mercedes’ signature luxurious ambiance. The dashboard adopts a T-shaped layout, with the upper part wrapped in soft-touch materials complemented by matte wood trim, giving it a solid feel. The seats are a combination of ARTICO leather and DINAMICA microfiber, providing excellent lateral support, with the AMG exclusive badge embossed on the backrest. The 10.25-inch central display, combined with the COMAND system, may not be as advanced as the latest MBUX system, but its button and knob control logic is intuitive and quick to master. The standard HUD head-up display, which shows speed, navigation, and other information, enhances safety by eliminating the need to look down while driving. In terms of features, keyless entry/start, independent rear air conditioning, and rain-sensing wipers are standard. The front seats come with power adjustment and heating (though less used in the local climate, it adds to the completeness of the configuration), and the power-folding mirrors are practical when parking in tight spaces.
The space performance aligns with the positioning of a mid-size SUV. The vehicle dimensions measure 4730/1890/1600mm (L/W/H) with a wheelbase of 2873mm. Front row headroom is about one fist and two fingers, and after adjusting the driver’s seat, the rear row legroom offers over two fists of space. The headroom in the rear row is slightly compromised due to the sloping roofline, but a 175cm tall passenger can be seated without hitting their head. In terms of storage capability, the front central armrest box is spacious enough to hold two phones and a wallet, and the door storage compartments can fit large water bottles. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 550L, which can be expanded to 1400L when the rear seats are folded down, making enough room for a stroller or golf bag, fully meeting the needs of family weekend trips.
Dynamic driving is the core highlight of this car. The 3.0T V6 twin-turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 390PS and a peak torque of 520N·m. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, allowing it to accelerate from 0-100km/h in an official 4.9 seconds. In actual driving, the power output in Normal mode is smooth and the start is brisk. The gearbox shift logic is smart, and there is no jolting at low speeds when following traffic. When switched to SPORT+ mode, throttle response becomes more sensitive, and pushing the pedal down reveals the sustained thrust of the V6 engine. Gearbox downshifts become more aggressive, and the push-back sensation sustains from low speed to high speed. When overtaking, you only need to lightly press the throttle. The steering feels precise with minimal play and evenly balanced return force. It feels light at low speed and stable at high speed, in line with the positioning of a sporty SUV. The chassis comes with a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension. Although the AMG tuning skews towards stiffness, the ability to absorb bumps is not weak—going over speed bumps reveals tight suspension without any excess bouncing. On common bumpy local roads, the vehicle’s posture remains stable. On mountain roads, body roll control is significantly better than the standard GLC, and the suspension holds the body well while cornering, giving the driver enough confidence.
In terms of fuel consumption, real-world testing on mixed routes (30% urban traffic + 70% highways) shows an average fuel consumption of about 10.5L per 100 km. During highway cruising, it can reduce to around 8.2L. For a 3.0T V6 model, this performance is considered average and meets local consumers' expectations for fuel consumption of luxury sports SUVs. In brake performance tests, the braking distance from 100-0km/h is approximately 38 meters. The brake pedal feel is linear, with some play in the initial stage, but ample and stable braking force in the mid to late stages. Noise control performance is commendable. At highway speeds of 120km/h, wind noise mainly comes from the A-pillar area due to the coupe-like design, but it remains within acceptable limits. Tire noise and engine noise are well suppressed, thanks to the double-layered soundproof glass.
Overall, the 2020 AMG GLC Coupe 43 4MATIC Coupe has strong core advantages: the AMG-tuned power system ranks in the top tier among its competitors (such as the BMW X4 M40i and Audi SQ5 Sportback), and its 4.9-second acceleration caters to driving enthusiasm. The coupe-like design balances aesthetics and practicality, offering space comparable to regular midsize SUVs. In terms of configuration, features like HUD, 360-degree panoramic imaging, and rear air conditioning come standard across all models, making it more equipped than entry-level competitors. However, it also has minor drawbacks, such as reduced rear headroom due to the coupe design, higher fuel consumption compared to the 2.0T models, and a price (RM 508,597) that’s approximately 80,000 MYR higher than the standard GLC AMG Line.
This car is suitable for two types of consumers: firstly, young families seeking brand prestige and driving enjoyment. They need the space of an SUV for outings with kids but also want to enjoy AMG performance on weekends. Secondly, it suits professionals aged 30-40 who want an impressive vehicle for daily commutes while ensuring comfort on occasional long-distance trips. If you have a budget of around 500,000 MYR and are looking for a luxury coupe SUV that "can handle family needs and adventure," the AMG GLC Coupe 43 should definitely be on your list.
