The luxury mid-to-large-sized SUV market in Malaysia has always been a battleground for German brands, with consumers seeking both brand prestige and a balance between spatial practicality and driving performance. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4Matic Coupe, as the "entry-level performance model" of the AMG family, enters the market with its 3.0T mild hybrid engine, coupe-like fastback design, and fully loaded technological features. Its core selling points directly strike a chord with users wishing to combine daily luxury with occasional bursts of exhilaration. This time, we have the physical vehicle to test its static quality to see whether it lives up to the Mercedes-Benz badge, to evaluate whether its dynamic performance captures the essence of AMG, and to determine if it truly meets the practical needs of a family car.

At first glance, the positioning as a coupe SUV is very clear — overall lines are smoother than the standard GLE, the roofline slopes gently downward from the B-pillar, and the rear end is more compact, shedding the bulky feel of traditional SUVs. The front features AMG’s iconic vertical chrome-grille design, complemented by the large lower air intake; the sharply styled LED headlights on both sides boast high recognizability when illuminated. The side profile sports massive 22-inch wheels equipped with 285/40 ZR22 front and 325/35 ZR22 rear tires, amplifying visual impact, while the muscular wheel arch lines enhance the performance feel. At the rear, the quad-round exhausts and the petite spoiler clearly declare its AMG identity.

Sitting inside the car, the luxurious feel that Mercedes-Benz promises does not disappoint. The dashboard is wrapped in large areas of soft leather, accented with metal trim and piano black panels, with every touch surface exuding refinement. The standard 12.3-inch dual-display panels offer touchscreen functionality and touchpad controls, with smooth system operation supporting navigation and multimedia features. The AMG-exclusive flat-bottom steering wheel includes paddle shifters, has a solid grip, and its multifunction button layout is ergonomic for easy blind operation. The features are nearly maxed out: HUD (heads-up display), 360-degree panoramic cameras, automatic parking, rear-seat LCD screens, independent rear-seat air conditioning, and power outlets are all included. Even knee airbags come as a standard, reflecting abundant safety features.

In terms of spatial performance, the vehicle dimensions are 4939/2010/1730mm (L/W/H) with a wheelbase of 2935mm. The front seats provide ample space with good wrapping and adequate support for spirited driving. The rear legroom offers about two fist widths, and while the sloping roofline might slightly restrict headroom for passengers around 180cm tall, everyday family use poses no issues. The standard trunk space is 655L, sufficient to accommodate two 28-inch suitcases along with several backpacks. With the rear seats folded down, the capacity expands, maintaining practicality without compromise.

As for the powertrain, the 3.0T inline-six turbocharged engine is augmented by a 48V mild hybrid system, delivering a maximum output of 435PS. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive system. In standard mode, the car starts smoothly, with the mild hybrid system assisting low-speed output, reducing turbo lag. Switching to Sport Mode makes the throttle response noticeably sharper, and the power is always at your command with a 0-100 km/h acceleration official time of 5.3 seconds. In real-world tests, the thrust is continuous and linear, providing plenty of confidence for overtaking. The gearbox boasts intelligent shift logic, with proactive upshifts and decisive downshifts, while the paddle shifters respond quickly, catering well to occasional driving thrills.

The handling performance aligns with AMG's character, the steering is precise with minimal play, and road feedback is clear; the suspension uses a front double-wishbone independent structure, offering strong support with well-controlled body roll during cornering, making it more agile than a regular GLE; on bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most fine vibrations while retaining a certain level of road feel without compromising comfort; the all-wheel-drive system performs excellently on slippery roads and can occasionally handle unpaved roads. As for fuel consumption, it averages around 10-12L/100km under mixed conditions, which is reasonable for a 3.0T engine.

In terms of driving and riding comfort, noise control is excellent, with minimal wind and tire noise at high speeds, and the engine noise only penetrates the cabin when the accelerator is pressed deeply, providing a robust yet unintrusive sound; the seat padding is moderately firm, making prolonged seating comfortable; the energy recovery system has three adjustable levels, with a noticeable drag effect in the highest mode when the accelerator is released. However, once accustomed, it reduces brake usage, while the lowest setting mimics the coasting feel of traditional fuel-powered cars, catering to various driving habits.

In summary, the 2020 AMG GLE 53 4Matic Coupe stands out for its key advantages: it offers the luxurious quality and full range of features synonymous with Mercedes-Benz, coupled with AMG's performance pedigree, and its coupe-like design makes it more distinctive than its competitors. Compared to the BMW X6 M40i, it boasts more comprehensive features and a more competitive price; compared to the standard GLE, it offers upgraded performance and aesthetics.

This car is well-suited for two types of users: firstly, families who value the brand and quality while occasionally seeking driving enjoyment; it offers enough space and features for daily family use while also providing a burst of power when needed. Secondly, young individuals pursuing uniqueness and luxury; its coupe design is eye-catching, and the AMG badge satisfies social needs.

Overall, it is neither a pure performance car nor solely a comfort-oriented family SUV but rather a "well-rounded player"—capable of luxurious family use while also being able to go wild occasionally. It is an excellent choice in the luxury midsize and large SUV market, striking a balance between rationality and emotion.

The central control large screen's smoothness is a bit lacking, but the Berlin Sound audio system is truly excellent, even traffic jams don't bother me anymore!

Previously, I was driving a standard GLE SUV, but switching to this AMG GLE 53 Coupe was definitely the right choice! During Malaysia's morning rush hour, which is as jam-packed as a parking lot, its 48V mild-hybrid system delivers super smooth starts, and the 3.0T turbo kicks in seamlessly. When following traffic, I don’t have to frequently step on the brakes, and occasionally using the paddle shifters to switch to manual mode adds some fun. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 4MATIC provides excellent grip while climbing up the hills, and the body roll in corners is much less than the old GLE. My wife sat in the back watching shows (the rear LCD screen is super handy) and didn’t feel carsick at all. The safety features are top-notch—one time on the highway, a car almost sideswiped us while changing lanes, and the lane change assist flashed warning lights like crazy. It scared me, but it saved the car paint! However, there are some downsides: the coupe-like sloped design is stylish (with a higher head-turn rate compared to standard SUVs), but the trunk opening is smaller than the old GLE, almost getting stuck when loading the baby stroller last time. The 22-inch low-profile tires make driving on Kuala Lumpur’s bumpy roads particularly uncomfortable, and you have to slow down to a crawl when going over speed bumps. The interior is flawless; with the Burmester sound system and HUD, even listening to Malaysian songs during traffic jams feels like a livehouse concert—perfection!

This GLE 53 Coupe has been driven for more than two years, and every time I look at the side profile, it still feels stylish. The HUD and 360-degree camera are quite handy in traffic jams, and on the highway, a push on the gas gives instant power when overtaking. The rear LCD screen occasionally gets played with by the kids, but the seats are wide enough to fit three friends comfortably on a mountain drive without feeling cramped.

As the owner of the 2020 AMG GLE 53 Coupe, after driving it in Malaysia for three years, I genuinely feel that it's worth every penny! Previously, I was driving a standard GLE, but after switching to the 53, the power is phenomenal—3.0T with mild hybrid. During the morning rush at Jalan Ampang, even a light tap on the accelerator makes overtaking a breeze, and the 5.3-second 0-100 km/h acceleration feels amazing on the highway. The interior craftsmanship is impeccable, with the Burmester sound system and HUD making drives along the East Coast Highway an absolute pleasure. Safety features are top-notch, and during rainy days with slippery roads in Kuala Lumpur, the 4MATIC provides outstanding stability. The only minor downside is the slightly cramped headroom in the rear; for someone who's 180cm, it can feel a bit tight after sitting for a while. However, overall, the performance, interior, and safety get full marks. The fastback design of the exterior does compromise some space, but the high-turning heads make up for it, giving it more style than the X6!

Previously drove an X5, switched to the GLE 53 Coupe mainly for the AMG vibe and the coupe's sleek design. Safety gets a score of 4; 7 airbags + a complete set of active safety features, the forward collision warning saved me with emergency braking once during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour. Interior gets a 4; the HUD and rear screens are tech-savvy enough, but the co-driver's storage compartment is a bit shallow. Performance scores 4; the 3.0T + mild hybrid provides a nice kick during overtakes on the North-South Expressway with a 5.3-second acceleration, but the 22-inch tires make it a bit bumpy on rural roads. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the 4MATIC was super stable, though with a 65-liter fuel tank, you'll need to refuel frequently for long trips. Overall, for use in Malaysia, it balances prestige and practicality, and the minor shortcomings are acceptable.
