2022 BMW i4 M50 Review

In recent years, the electric car market in Malaysia's sports car segment has been heating up. Consumers not only seek powerful performance but also value a balance between luxurious features and daily practicality. The BMW i4 M50, being the brand's first all-electric M series four-door coupe, with a maximum power output of 544PS, acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, and an official range of 510km, has become a popular choice in this segment. This test drive will comprehensively evaluate the car from aspects such as static design, dynamic performance, and daily practicality to determine whether it can balance sporty characteristics with household needs.
In terms of appearance, the i4 M50 continues the streamlined silhouette of a four-door coupe. With dimensions of 4785mm in length and 1852mm in width, paired with a fastback-style rear, it retains a sporty feel without compromising the spaciousness of a family vehicle. The front features a closed double kidney grille, combined with M-series exclusive blue brake calipers and 19-inch dual five-spoke wheels, offering high recognizability. The LED headlights come standard with an automatic lighting function, and the rear LED taillights feature a through-line design, providing a sleek and tech-savvy visual effect when lit at night. The overall design blends classic BMW elements with the futurism of an electric vehicle, matching the positioning of a sports car.
Inside, the interior adopts a black color scheme, complemented by M-series exclusive carbon fiber trim and blue stitching, creating a sporty atmosphere. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and the 14.9-inch central control screen use a connected design, offering smooth touch response and supporting CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The front row is equipped with electrically adjustable sports seats with memory function, providing excellent wraparound support and long-lasting comfort for extended drives. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration, and the trunk has a capacity of 470L, which can be expanded when folded down, meeting daily cargo needs. In terms of configuration, standard features include a Harman Kardon 17-speaker audio system, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air conditioning vents, 360-degree panoramic camera, and automatic parking, balancing practicality and luxury.
Power performance is the core advantage of the i4 M50. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivers 544PS of power and 795N·m of torque, offering swift responses when starting in sports mode. Its acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds is strong yet linear, and overtaking requires only light throttle input for ample power. For daily driving, switching to comfort mode results in a smoother power output suitable for urban commutes. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension, with tuning leaning towards firmness but retaining a certain degree of resilience. The body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and the high-speed stability is excellent. When traversing speed bumps or uneven roads, it effectively absorbs fine vibrations, balancing sportiness with comfort. The steering wheel provides precise handling with minimal slack, in line with the M-series’ focus on control.
In terms of range and energy consumption, the official 510km range achieves about 80% in real urban driving conditions (air conditioning on, congested city traffic), while highway cruising at 120km/h yields an approximate range of 400km, making it adequate for weekly charging in daily commutes. The battery has a capacity of 83.9kWh and supports fast charging, with a charging time of 30% to 80% in about 40 minutes. The energy consumption is average, with urban electricity consumption at approximately 18kWh/100km and highway consumption at around 22kWh/100km.
In terms of driving comfort, the interior noise control is excellent. At speeds below 80km/h, wind and tire noise are almost inaudible. At high speeds, wind noise increases slightly but does not hinder conversations. The energy recovery system is adjustable in three levels. In the highest level, releasing the accelerator pedal provides strong deceleration, approaching a one-pedal driving mode; the lowest level is closer to the coasting experience of a gasoline car, catering to different driving habits. Regarding rear space, the 2856mm wheelbase provides ample legroom, with a 175cm tall passenger having two fist-widths of space remaining for their legs. However, due to the coupe-like roof design, headroom feels slightly constrained but does not affect everyday comfort.
Overall, the BMW i4 M50 stands out among its peers in the segment of pure electric sports sedans, blending powerful performance, luxurious features, and practical space. Compared to the Tesla Model 3 Performance, its interior feels more premium and offers richer features; compared to the entry-level Porsche Taycan, it has a price advantage. This vehicle is well-suited for consumers seeking both sporty performance and daily practicality—such as professionals aged 30-45, who can enjoy thrilling weekend drives while also fulfilling family travel needs. As a representative of BMW's pure-electric M series, the i4 M50 strikes a perfect balance between performance and practicality, making it a worthy option in its niche market.
