2023 BMW 7 Series 750e xDrive M Sport Review

In the luxury executive sedan market, there aren't many models that simultaneously balance business style, technological features, and the economic benefits of new energy. As the plug-in hybrid version under the brand, the 2023 BMW 7 Series 750e xDrive M Sport uses a "3.0T + electric motor" power combination, an 89km pure electric range, and fully-loaded luxury features to enter the market, with a clear core selling point — retaining the power reserve of a fuel vehicle while relying on pure electric mode to lower daily commuting costs. In this test drive, we focus on verifying the practicality of its plug-in hybrid system, the actual experience of its luxury features, and the ride and handling quality expected of an executive sedan.
When parked by the roadside, the presence of the 750e easily sets it apart from ordinary sedans. With a length of 5391mm and a wheelbase of 3215mm, its side profile flows seamlessly from the front to the rear, without unnecessary complex designs. However, the addition of the M Sport package reduces some of the traditional bulkiness of executive sedans — the front grille has a smoked-out finish, and the sporty front lip and side air intakes on the lower bumper give it a younger appearance. The "Angel Eyes" daytime running lights of the LED headlights remain distinct, with a sharp visual effect when illuminated. The side of the car maintains a sleek proportion, with 19-inch wheels perfectly matching the body without looking overly exaggerated. The rear is relatively simple in design, with horizontally-oriented LED taillights connected by a chrome strip, and the exhaust is concealed under the bumper, delivering a low-key yet refined look.
Opening the car door, the sense of luxury is immediately palpable. The dashboard uses a symmetric design, with an extensive use of soft-touch materials, complemented by wood grain panels and metal trim, offering both tactile and visual effects that align with its executive positioning. The 10.25-inch central touchscreen has a high resolution and operates smoothly, supporting CarPlay and CarLife integration; the fully digital instrument cluster displays comprehensive information and allows theme switching, while the HUD (head-up display) projects core information like speed and navigation onto the windshield, reducing the need to divert attention while driving. The front seats are equipped with electric adjustment, heating, ventilation functions, and memory modes, providing excellent support and comfort even during long drives. The rear seats are the highlight, featuring electrically adjustable seats with massage functions, and the center armrest integrates the BMW Touch Control panel for direct control of rear air conditioning, seating, and multimedia, making it highly practical for business receptions. In terms of storage space, the front central armrest box and door storage compartments offer decent capacity, and the trunk provides 525L of space, which is enough for a few suitcases for daily use. The plug-in hybrid system battery does not noticeably encroach on the trunk space.
Sitting in the driver's seat, I first tested the pure electric mode. The 197PS motor output is very smooth, with no jolting as experienced in fuel vehicles when starting. It’s entirely adequate for daily city commuting, with quick response when accelerating to 60km/h and effortless overtaking. Switching to hybrid mode, the 3.0T six-cylinder engine and the electric motor work together, delivering a system combined output of 489PS and 700N·m of torque. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is quoted as 4.9 seconds, and when stepping on the accelerator, the power surge is immediate, with a notable push-back sensation and strong acceleration capabilities on highways. The transmission is an AT type with clear shifting logic, and gear shifts are almost imperceptible.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers moderate weight and precise direction. Despite the large body size, it does not feel cumbersome when turning. The front double wishbone and rear multi-link suspension system is tuned for comfort while maintaining a certain level of support. When going over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations without significant body bounce. On highways, the chassis offers great stability, and the car body maintains good control of side tilts during lane changes. The all-wheel-drive system provides better traction on rainy or slippery roads, offering a strong sense of driving confidence.
In terms of energy consumption, the official pure electric range is 89km, and in actual city commuting, it can reach about 80km if the air conditioning is not used, which is a decent attainment rate. In hybrid mode, the combined fuel consumption is about 6.5L/100km (better than the official claimed 8L), making fuel economy considerably better than the pure fuel version. Fast charging takes 3 hours to fully charge the battery, making it very convenient for daily home or office charging.
In terms of driving comfort, the soundproofing is excellent. In pure electric mode, almost no noise is heard, and when the engine engages in hybrid mode, it remains very quiet. Tire and wind noise are well-controlled at high speeds. The front seats offer heating and ventilation, which are very practical in Malaysia's climate, while the rear seats provide a massage function to alleviate fatigue during long rides. The regenerative energy system offers adjustable levels. At the highest level, releasing the accelerator creates a significant drag that feels akin to braking, saving many braking instances. At the lowest level, it mimics the coasting feel of fuel vehicles, making it easy to adapt.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 BMW 750e xDrive M Sport are evident: the plug-in hybrid system balances power and efficiency, and the 89km of pure electric range is sufficient for most daily commutes. In hybrid mode, it delivers strong power output. The luxury features are fully equipped, including heated and ventilated front seats, massaging rear seats, and Harman Kardon sound system, perfectly catered for executive-level needs. The spacious interior provides great practicality. Compared to similar plug-in hybrids like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or Audi A8L, its price (RM 612,700) is more competitive without lagging behind in features.
The target audience for this car is clear: first, business professionals who need executive-level style to host clients while reducing daily commuting costs with the pure electric mode. Secondly, family users who will enjoy the spacious interior and comfortable features that cater to family members, alongside reduced vehicle maintenance expenses enabled by the hybrid system's low fuel consumption. Lastly, luxury car buyers focusing on efficiency, who desire the power of a six-cylinder engine but prefer to avoid high fuel expenses.
Overall, the 2023 BMW 750e xDrive M Sport is a "versatile" luxury executive plug-in hybrid sedan without significant shortcomings. Whether for business or family use, it is competent, making it an excellent choice in the luxury car market for those balancing emotional experience and rational needs.
