In the past two years, Malaysia's luxury electric vehicle market has been heating up. Many consumers want to retain the texture of traditional luxury brands while switching to a more environmentally friendly mode of electric travel. The demand for mid-sized luxury electric sedans is rapidly growing in this niche market. The 2023 BMW i4 eDrive 35, as an important model in the brand’s electrification lineup, positions itself close to the fuel-powered 3 Series. It not only continues BMW's driving pedigree but also offers the low running cost advantages of an electric vehicle. Through this in-depth test drive, we will see whether it meets Malaysian consumers' expectations for a luxury pure electric sedan.

From the exterior, the i4 eDrive 35 overall maintains BMW's classic coupe silhouette. The front adopts a closed dual kidney grille, complemented by blue decorative strips around it, clearly marking its identity as an electric vehicle. Sensors integrated within the grille are used for data collection in the driver assistance system. The body side lines are smooth, with a waistline stretching from the front fender to the rear, enhancing its muscular feel. The 18-inch wheel design is sporty while also optimizing aerodynamics. The rear design is relatively simple, with family-style L-shaped LED taillights that offer high recognition when lit, and a diffuser on the lower rear bumper that retains a sporty vibe. The overall design is neither overly aggressive nor understated, making it instantly recognizable as an electric BMW.

Inside the vehicle, the interior strikes a balance between luxury and technology. The center console adopts a dual-screen layout composed of a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display. The screen bezels are narrow, with good clarity and smoothness. The infotainment screen is equipped with the iDrive system, supporting voice control and gesture operations, and its response during daily use is relatively quick. In terms of materials, the door panels and central areas are wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with metal trims, giving a premium feel to all touchable surfaces. The front row is equipped with electrically adjustable sport seats, which provide excellent support and remain comfortable even during long drives. For the rear seats, the backrest angle is moderately set, and with the 2856mm wheelbase, legroom is quite spacious. A passenger with a height of 175cm will still have about two fists of space between their knees and the front seat. The trunk capacity is 470 liters, and the rear seats support split folding, easily accommodating several suitcases or larger items, making it completely sufficient for daily family use.

In terms of performance, the i4 eDrive 35 is equipped with a rear-mounted single motor delivering a maximum horsepower of 286PS and a peak torque of 400N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6 seconds. During actual driving, the power response in the initial stages is very direct, and a light press on the accelerator provides a noticeable pushback. Although mid-to-late acceleration is less aggressive compared to performance versions, flooring the pedal still offers ample power output for overtaking, and maintaining a cruise speed of 120km/h on the highway is effortless. There are three driving modes to choose from: ECO, COMFORT, and SPORT. In ECO mode, the power output is smoother, making it suitable for daily commuting. In SPORT mode, the steering wheel becomes heavier, and power response becomes more immediate, providing a rather enjoyable driving experience.

The handling performance continues BMW's advantage, with precise steering and minimal play in the steering wheel. When cornering, you can clearly feel the front-end directionality. The chassis adopts a front double wishbone and rear multi-link suspension structure, tuned to be sporty but not stiff. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension quickly filters out vibrations, with no noticeable jolts. The body roll control during cornering is also excellent, maintaining a stable stance. We conducted a braking test on the highway, and the braking distance from 100km/h to a stop is about 38 meters. The brake pedal feels linear and gives a lot of confidence.

In terms of energy consumption, the official pure electric range is 483km. During our test drive of approximately 200km under mixed driving conditions, with 60% urban roads and 40% highway, the average power consumption was about 16kWh/100km. Based on this consumption, the actual range is roughly around 430km, achieving about 90% of its rated range. For Malaysian road conditions, charging once a week is generally sufficient. The in-cabin noise control performs well; at low speeds, the electric motor noise is barely audible, and at high speeds, tire and wind noise are minimal. Paired with the standard Sound Plus audio system, the ride comfort is excellent.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 BMW i4 eDrive 35 are evident: it combines BMW's signature driving quality with the efficiency of an electric vehicle. In terms of configuration, it comes standard with practical features such as a 360-degree panoramic camera, automatic parking, and full-speed adaptive cruise control, offering higher specifications than luxury fuel sedans in the same price range. Compared with the Tesla Model 3 Performance in the same class, the i4 eDrive 35 stands out in luxury and chassis quality. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz EQE, it is more budget-friendly and offers greater driving pleasure.

This car is suited for those who prioritize the driving experience, seek luxurious quality, and wish to explore electric mobility, such as young professionals or middle-class families. It satisfies daily commuting needs while offering a degree of driving fun on weekends, making it a well-balanced luxury electric sedan.

In summary, the 2023 BMW i4 eDrive 35 is an "uncompromising" electric BMW. It retains the brand's core strengths despite going electric, while also providing the convenience and cost-effectiveness of an EV. It is a worthy option in Malaysia's luxury electric sedan market.

Stuck on the elevated road near the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur during rush hour, while driving the i4 eDrive 35 and following the car ahead, the 14.9-inch central control screen suddenly displayed a warning message "The vehicle ahead is braking suddenly." At the same time, the steering wheel vibrated, and the distance indicator on the dashboard turned red. I quickly hit the brakes, watching the stream of cars behind me get closer and closer. Fortunately, the lane assist system promptly lit up the blind spot warning light, stopping me from making a risky lane change. However, I then realized that although the official range is 483km, in such congested traffic conditions, the actual range drops faster than expected. Additionally, the rear seats lack sufficient support, making them somewhat uncomfortable for long rides.

Previously drove a fuel-powered 3 Series, but after switching to the i4 eDrive35, I’ve completely fallen in love with electric cars! Fully equipped with safety features — the active safety system saved me during a sudden brake in Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour. The dual-screen interior is super smooth, and it’s perfect for watching dramas on my phone during lunch breaks. The exterior looks more like a coupe compared to the i3, but the rear design is a bit plain, deducting 1 point. Took the family to Penang over the weekend, and the 483km range was enough for a round trip, stable on the highway even at 190km/h. Minor complaint: although there are plenty of charging stations in Malaysia, there’s occasional queuing at mall fast-charging spots. But getting a luxurious RWD electric car for 270,000 MYR is definitely worth it!

Stuck in traffic during rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, with heavy rain pounding the windshield. The 360-degree camera makes the slippery road shine brightly, and the active braking system suddenly starts beeping—turns out the car in front made an emergency stop, and I hadn't even reacted yet when I was pulled to a stop. I touched the leather steering wheel, and the navigation on the 14.9-inch screen kept moving, while my wife in the back was using the 220V outlet to charge our kid's tablet. The safety features are really impressive, and the interior is solid, but the range drops faster than my heartbeat when climbing hills; I'll have to plan ahead next time for a trip to Genting.
