2023 BMW i7 XDrive60 Review

Under the wave of electrification, the luxury large sedan market is gradually witnessing the confrontation between "new forces" and traditional brands. As the representative of BMW's all-electric flagship sedan, the 2023 BMW i7 XDrive60 is targeting high-end users who seek both the luxurious heritage of the brand and an impressive electric mobility experience. The car's core selling points are very clear: an official electric range of 615 kilometers, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with 544 horsepower, and rear electric seat configurations rarely seen in its class. These features are enough to spark curiosity: how well can BMW balance power, comfort, and luxury in an all-electric luxury sedan? This time, we got a test drive car with the main goal of testing whether it can strike the perfect balance between performance, comfort, and a luxurious feel.
From the exterior, the i7 XDrive60 continues the commanding presence of BMW's large sedans. The overall style leans toward stability while the details are highly recognizable. The front features BMW's iconic kidney grille, but it is replaced with a closed design, with illuminated elements added to the edges, making it highly recognizable when lit at night. The LED headlights on both sides are sharp in design and equipped with laser light technology (though the usage rate might not be high in local driving conditions, the tech feel is fully delivered). The side profile of the car has smooth lines, and with a length of 5391mm paired with a 3215mm wheelbase, it exhibits an elongated proportion. The waistline extends from the front fender to the rear, complemented by the 20-inch multi-spoke wheels, maintaining its luxurious feel while not losing its sporty essence. At the rear, the most striking feature is the full-width LED taillights, where the internal "L"-shaped light strips echo the front; the diffuser-like design below adds a touch of sportiness. The overall design is consistent with its flagship status while making it instantly recognizable as an electric vehicle.
Opening the door, the sense of luxury inside the cabin is overwhelming. The dashboard features BMW's latest curved dual-screen design — a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel integrated with a 14.9-inch central control touchscreen, offering excellent interface smoothness and rich functionality, including support for wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, which are convenient for daily use. In terms of materials, the cabin extensively uses soft leather and wood grain trim. The steering wheel and seats are wrapped in Nappa leather with a fine touch; the front seats are equipped with electric adjustment, heating, and ventilation functions, ensuring a comfortable experience even during long drives. The rear seats are the highlight of the i7, featuring electrically adjustable independent seats with adjustable backrest angles and leg rests. The center armrest integrates a control screen, allowing adjustments for rear air conditioning, seating, and multimedia systems. Coupled with the Bowers and Wilkins 18-speaker sound system, passengers can enjoy an experience comparable to a first-class cabin. In terms of storage space, the front center armrest compartment is moderate in size, the door storage pockets can accommodate two large bottles of water, and the trunk has a capacity of 500 liters. Although slightly smaller than the gasoline-powered 7 Series, it is still capable of holding two suitcases with ease.
The space performance fully meets the standards of a flagship sedan. After adjusting the front seat to a comfortable position, a passenger with a height of 180cm has a headroom margin of one fist and two fingers. The rear legroom is even more generous; a passenger of the same height can have more than two fists of legroom, and with the adjustable leg rests, they can even recline for a rest. The rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet, making it convenient for passengers to use electronic devices. When the center armrest is folded down, it provides additional storage space. It is worth mentioning that the rear floor is almost entirely flat, ensuring the middle passenger's feet don't feel cramped, which is very friendly for family users.
In terms of power, the i7 XDrive60 is equipped with dual motors on the front and rear, delivering a combined maximum output of 400kW (544PS) and a peak torque of 795N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 4.7 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is very direct during the starting phase, and a light press on the accelerator provides a noticeable thrust. When switched to Sport mode, the power delivery becomes more aggressive, and the car accelerates swiftly with just a firm press on the pedal, completely defying its 2.7-ton weight. For daily driving, Comfort mode suffices as it provides a smoother power output, suitable for city commuting. In terms of range, the official rating is 615 kilometers, and in our mixed road condition test (50% city + 50% highway), the actual range is about 550 kilometers, achieving approximately 90% of the official figure, which is impressive. The energy consumption is around 20kWh per 100 kilometers, which is close to the official data of 19.7kWh. Regarding fast charging, using a DC fast charging station takes about 1.5 hours to charge from 10% to 80%, while a slow charge takes 11 hours, making it suitable for overnight home charging.
Handling and chassis performance are surprisingly good. Despite the car weighing over 2.7 tons, the steering is precise with minimal play. It feels light when driving at low speeds and becomes stable at high speeds, ensuring the car doesn’t feel cumbersome like a "big ship." The chassis adopts a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension system, combined with air suspension (optional on the test model), which effectively filters road bumps. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension absorbs vibrations quickly, providing passengers with a nearly bump-free experience. During cornering, the suspension also offers good support, controlling body roll effectively. Combined with the all-wheel-drive system, grip performance is excellent. Noise control is also done exceptionally well. Wind and tire noise are well suppressed at high speeds, and only a faint motor sound can be heard during rapid acceleration. Overall, the cabin quietness rivals gasoline-powered cars in the same class.
In terms of safety features, the i7 XDrive60 comes fully equipped: it includes 7 airbags, lane departure warning, active braking, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitoring as standard. Additionally, it is equipped with a 360-degree surround view camera and front and rear parking sensors, ensuring safety during daily driving and parking.
In conclusion, the 2023 BMW i7 XDrive60 has evident core advantages: strong performance, top-notch rear luxury features, excellent range, and BMW’s signature driving dynamics. Compared to its main competitor, the Mercedes EQS, the i7 has superior rear-seat comfort and power responsiveness. Against the Tesla Model S Plaid, it offers a more luxurious feel and a stronger brand heritage. This car is best suited for corporate users needing a vehicle for business receptions or families seeking luxury and comfort without sacrificing driving dynamics—a car that seamlessly meets the needs of daily commuting while being presentable in business settings.
Overall, the i7 XDrive60 is a well-rounded flagship electric sedan with "no significant shortcomings." It represents a perfect blend of BMW's sporty DNA and the quiet comfort of electrification. If your budget allows and you're looking for a premium electric vehicle that ticks almost every box, this would be an excellent choice.
