In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's luxury mid-to-large SUV market has become increasingly intense. Consumers not only pursue the sense of identity brought by the brand but also value a balance of performance, features, and practicality. As a popular model in this segment, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé highlights its core selling points with a 3.0T hybrid system, AMG sport tuning, and abundant luxury features. This test drive will focus on dimensions such as design, space, and driving performance to provide comprehensive recommendations for potential buyers.

From the exterior, this car maintains the sporty style typical of the AMG family while incorporating the sleek lines of a Coupé model. The front features a large-sized vertical grille design accompanied by the exclusive AMG emblem, offering a high degree of recognition. The sharp design of the LED headlamps on both sides, coupled with the clear lens structure inside, creates a striking visual effect when illuminated. The side profile features smooth lines, with the signature sloping rear design that defines Coupé models. The 22-inch large wheels, combined with wide tires measuring 285/40 ZR22 in the front and 325/35 ZR22 at the rear, further enhance its sporty stance. At the rear, the quad exhaust layout emphasizes its performance identity, while the horizontally designed LED taillights create a visual connection with the front headlamps. The overall design seamlessly blends the luxury SUV positioning with the unique sporty vibe of the AMG models.

Inside the car, the interior continues the luxurious ambiance of the Mercedes-Benz family. The center console adopts a dual-screen setup that includes a 12-inch touchscreen and a fully digital instrument panel, both of which deliver impressive operating smoothness and display clarity. Regarding materials, the dashboard is covered in soft leather, with wood grain accents on the door panels. Metallic air vents and buttons add to the premium tactile quality, aligning with luxury brand standards. In terms of features, the front seats support electric adjustment and offer good back and seat cushion support, making them suitable for long drives. The rear is equipped with independent air-conditioning vents and power outlets, and the seats can be folded in a 60:40 split to enhance spatial flexibility. Additionally, features such as the 13-speaker Burmester sound system, 360-degree camera, rain-sensing wipers, and more are all standard, ensuring daily convenience and comfort.

In terms of space, the car dimensions are 4937mm×2010mm×1730mm, with a wheelbase of 2935mm. The front row provides ample seating space—after adjusting the seat, a person 180cm tall still has a fist of headroom. The rear legroom extends up to about two fist-widths, while the headroom, affected by the sloping roofline, leaves about three fingers’ space above the head for a 180cm-tall passenger. Although not as spacious as traditional SUVs, it meets daily family usage needs without any problem. The trunk offers a standard volume of 630L, which can be further expanded by folding the rear seats. It's relatively easy to accommodate large items such as strollers and suitcases.

As for the powertrain, the car is equipped with a 3.0T turbocharged engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, delivering a total power output of 320kW (435PS) and a peak torque of 560N·m. It is matched with a 9-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, the involvement of the mild-hybrid system at startup ensures quicker power response with almost no turbo lag. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle pedal becomes more sensitive, offering a strong sense of acceleration. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5 seconds, and actual tests closely match this data. For daily driving, Comfort mode is primarily used, providing smooth power delivery and clear transmission shifting logic, suitable for urban conditions.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the front double wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension have been tuned by AMG, resulting in an overall firm setup. The body roll is well-controlled during cornering, the steering is precise with moderate feedback, providing drivers with enough confidence. When encountering bumpy roads, the suspension effectively absorbs minor vibrations, though larger speed bumps transmit more noticeable jolts into the cabin. While emphasizing sportiness, comfort has not been significantly compromised. In terms of fuel consumption, real-world testing shows approximately 11L/100km in urban road conditions and about 8L/100km on highways, which meets the expectations for a 3.0T engine.

The noise insulation is commendable, with tire noise and wind noise well-controlled during driving. Engine noise can be heard inside the cabin during rapid acceleration, but it is not harsh. The seat comfort is good, with moderate firmness in the padding, making long drives less fatiguing. Additionally, features such as all-speed ACC cruise control, lane change assist, and active braking are all standard, further enhancing driving safety.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé lie in the AMG-tuned sporty performance, abundant luxury features, and the influence of the Mercedes-Benz brand. Compared to competing vehicles in the same class, it offers superior power response and handling performance, while its interior quality and feature levels are also top-tier. This vehicle is suitable for family users who value brand prestige and seek a sporty driving experience, as well as young consumers needing a vehicle that balances business and daily use.

In summary, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé strikes a good balance between luxury, performance, and practicality, making it a strong competitor in the luxury mid-to-large coupe SUV market.

This GLE 53 Coupe has been driven for half a year, and the most enjoyable part is overtaking during the morning rush hour — with the 3.0T+ mild hybrid system, stepping on the pedal gets you to 0-100 km/h in just 5 seconds, leaving the cars beside far behind. The 4MATIC+ traction is impressively stable. 22-inch tire noise? With the Burmester sound system on, you can't hear a thing. Even with three people in the back seat, it doesn’t feel cramped, but the 65L fuel tank does require frequent refueling on long highway drives–a minor drawback.

Last week, during the heavy rain, I took my family to Genting Highlands. The mountain roads were slippery and congested, but the 3.0T+48V mild hybrid power was always ready to go. The 4MATIC+ was very stable during cornering, and the grip of the 22-inch tires was strong enough. The Burmester sound system drowned out the rain, and the 12-inch navigation screen was clear. However, although the Burmester sound system was excellent, there were occasional small flaws in the interior stitching. The rear space was a bit cramped for me at 180cm tall. Nonetheless, the 630L trunk had no problem fitting both a stroller and a hiking bag. Overall, I am still very satisfied.

Previously, I was driving the standard GLE SUV, but after switching to the AMG GLE 53 Coupe, I finally understood the meaning of a "wolf in sheep's clothing"! The coupe design draws full attention under the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, but the rear slopes down too sharply, making the headroom in the back tighter compared to the standard version. Sitting in the back for a long time if you are 180cm tall will make your head hit the ceiling – this is why I deducted 1 point. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang, the 48V mild hybrid + 9AT runs very smoothly, with almost no jerks; on weekends driving on the North-South Expressway, switching to Sport+ mode unleashes the 3.0T engine + electric motor, turning overtaking into an easy "immediate switch," breaking 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds is no exaggeration! The 22-inch tires provide great stability at high speeds, but it does get a bit bumpy on rural rough roads. Though the RM810,000 price tag is painful, the Burmester sound system + 360-degree camera make it truly worry-free to use in Malaysia. Overall, I’m very satisfied!

Previously, I drove a regular GLE SUV, but switched to this AMG coupe version, completely captivated by its interior! The Burmester sound system is incredibly soothing during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic when playing a Malaysian song, and the dual screens operate seamlessly. Performance-wise, the 3.0T + mild hybrid powertrain delivers a thrilling push-back feeling when overtaking on the North-South Expressway, which even scared my friend in the backseat to yell "take it easy," though the body roll in high-speed corners is slightly more noticeable than expected, deducting 1 point. On the weekend trip with family to Genting Highlands, the 22-inch tire noise was a bit loud on mountain roads, but the all-wheel-drive traction felt reassuring. The only minor gripe is the 65L fuel tank, which requires frequent refueling on long trips, but everything else is spot on!
