2023 MINI 3 Door Electric Resolute Edition Review

The current B-segment electric vehicle market in Malaysia is experiencing a surge in niche demand. Some consumers seek the distinctiveness of classic designs while refusing to compromise on the convenience of electrification. The emergence of the MINI 3 Door Electric Resolute Edition precisely addresses this pain point—it retains MINI's iconic retro silhouette while incorporating exclusive design elements and enhanced configurations, aiming to stand out in the homogenized electric vehicle market. The core of this test drive is to verify whether this limited-edition model can balance the "driving pleasure of MINI" with the "daily practicality of an electric vehicle," providing a reliable choice for users who value individuality and quality.
From a distance, the Resolute Edition's distinctiveness is striking. The classic three-door hatchback design remains unchanged, but its exclusive British Green metallic paint paired with a piano black roof and outer mirror caps creates a visual contrast. The front end features an octagonal grille surrounded by exclusive Resolute Bronze trim, with an enclosed design for an intuitive representation of its electric vehicle identity. The MINI logo above the grille is also blacked out, giving it a sportier appearance compared to standard versions. The waistline along the side of the car extends from the headlights to the taillights, combined with 17-inch black multi-spoke wheels, maintaining MINI's hallmark compact dynamism. The rear design is relatively simple, featuring LED taillights with the iconic ring-shaped light strips, offering high recognizability when illuminated; the diffuser at the bottom of the rear bumper also includes Bronze trim, echoing the front design, creating an overall style that’s both retro and refined.
Opening the door, the texture of the interior is more solid than expected. The dashboard retains MINI's classic circular design, but this time it is equipped with an 8.8-inch touchscreen display, which performs smoothly and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making daily operations quite user-friendly. The HUD head-up digital display is standard, allowing drivers to view speed and navigation information without looking down, maximizing practicality. The seats are made of a leather and fabric combination, with the front seats featuring electric adjustment. The padding is relatively firm but offers excellent support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. Notably, the interior storage space is very practical: the door panel storage can accommodate two water bottles, the central armrest compartment, though small, can hold a phone and keys, and the front row includes a 220V power outlet for charging laptops. However, the limited rear seat space is undoubtedly a drawback—passengers 175cm tall will find their knees pressing against the front seatbacks, making it suitable only for occasional use. The trunk space is also not extensive; it can fit two 20-inch suitcases in its standard configuration, making it more suited for short trips.
In terms of power, this electric vehicle is equipped with a front-mounted electric motor, delivering a maximum output of 184PS and a peak torque of 270N·m, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.3 seconds. In actual driving, the power response is very direct during starts—a light press on the accelerator provides noticeable thrust, making overtaking and lane-changing in urban areas highly agile. It offers three driving modes: Sport, Standard, and Green. In Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity is higher, making power delivery more aggressive. In Green mode, the power is limited, and regenerative braking force is increased, ideal for energy-efficient daily commuting. The suspension performance is surprising; the combination of the front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned to be firm yet resilient, resulting in minimal body roll when cornering. The handling fully meets MINI's brand identity. However, vibrations are transmitted rather directly into the cabin when going over speed bumps or uneven roads, slightly compromising comfort.
Range and power consumption are the most concerned points for electric vehicle users. This car has a battery capacity of 28.9kWh and an official pure electric range of 232km. We tested it on urban roads for a week, mostly using green mode. With a daily commute of about 50km, we charged it once in a week, and the actual range was around 200km, achieving approximately 86% of the advertised range, which is mediocre. The power consumption per 100km is about 15.5kWh, which is close to the official figure of 15.2kWh, being at a normal level for its class. Noise control is well done; the electric motor is almost silent at low speeds, while wind and tire noise becomes slightly noticeable at high speeds, but remains within an acceptable range.
Overall, the core advantages of the MINI 3 Door Electric Resolute Edition are clear: First, its unique design, with exclusive exterior and interior details, makes it stand out from the mainstream. Second, practical configurations like HUD, electric seats, front and rear sensors are standard, offering more features than peers like ORA Good Cat and Volkswagen ID.3 at similar price levels. Third, it provides driving pleasure, retaining MINI's characteristic driving dynamics, making it suitable for people who enjoy driving. However, its weaknesses are also obvious: limited rear seat space and shorter range, making it unsuitable for users who frequently take long trips.
If you are a young person seeking individuality and driving fun, or you're looking for a second family car mainly for urban commuting, this car would be very suitable for you — it has MINI's classic design, the convenience and eco-friendliness of an electric car, and sufficient configurations. But if your main priority is spaciousness and long range, you might need to consider other models. All in all, the MINI 3 Door Electric Resolute Edition is a car "designed for those who understand it." It's not perfect, but it has plenty of character.
