2023 Suzuki Jimny Review

The demand for small SUVs in Malaysia's A-segment market has been heating up in recent years. Consumers are looking for the urban commuting flexibility offered by compact bodies, while also expecting a certain level of off-road capability to handle suburban road conditions. The 2023 Suzuki Jimny, as a popular contender in this segment, retains its classic rugged design in this facelift, while optimizing details in its features. Priced at RM 158,900, it targets young families who value cost performance. Our core goal in this test drive is to verify whether its overall performance in daily commuting and weekend outings meets expectations.
The 2023 Jimny continues with its boxy design, boasting a rugged overall style with high recognition. At the front, round LED headlights combined with a five-slot front grille and pronounced front bumper retain the classic elements of a rugged off-road vehicle. The side profile features straight lines, 15-inch wheels paired with 195/80 R15 tires, and a minimum ground clearance of 210mm, enhancing its visual off-road capability. The rear design is simple, with rectangular halogen tail lights, and a tow hook is equipped below the rear bumper, adding practicality. The overall dimensions are 3480mm×1645mm×1720mm, with a wheelbase of 2250mm. Its compact body makes U-turns and parking in narrow roads especially agile.
Inside, the Jimny's interior focuses on practicality, with a simple and straightforward center console layout. The seats are upholstered in fabric, with manually adjustable front seats. The rear seats support a 50:50 split-folding configuration, and when folded down, the trunk space expands from 85L to a larger capacity, meeting the needs for short journeys with luggage. The center console is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen supporting the Sound Plus function. Although it has only two speakers, it is adequate for everyday music listening. Standard features include keyless start, single-zone automatic air conditioning, automatic headlights, and front fog lights. However, the inclusion of only two airbags places it at a basic level among vehicles in the same class. In terms of space, the front seating area is sufficient for a person with a height of 175cm, but the rear legroom is somewhat cramped. Long-term rides in the back might feel uncomfortable, making it more suitable for transporting children or passengers with smaller builds on short trips.
In terms of power, the Jimny is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power output of 75kW (101.4PS) and a peak torque of 130N·m, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration from a standstill is relatively gentle, making it suitable for low-speed city driving. Once the speed exceeds 60km/h, power delivery becomes more stable, but achieving sufficient power for overtaking requires a harder press on the accelerator. The vehicle only offers a standard driving mode, which is adequate for daily road conditions but lacks the punch of a sport mode. In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers precise control with minimal play, and the car maintains stable posture when cornering. The suspension system adopts a front and rear 3-link rigid axle design, which has an average damping effect on bumpy roads. The road feel is directly transmitted, but it maintains good stability during high-speed driving. As for fuel consumption, the tested fuel efficiency on mixed road conditions is about 7.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official 6.8L/100km, but considering the SUV's body design, this performance is within an acceptable range.
In terms of ride comfort, the seat support is decent, but prolonged sitting may cause lumbar fatigue; regarding noise control, wind noise and tire noise become quite noticeable after exceeding a speed of 80km/h, affecting the cabin's quietness. The braking performance is stable, with a braking distance of about 42 meters for 100km/h to a complete stop, which is average for its class. As for off-road capability, the 210mm ground clearance and short front and rear overhangs enable impressive performance on unpaved rural roads, easily tackling small potholes and slopes.
In conclusion, the core advantages of the 2023 Suzuki Jimny lie in its rugged styling, compact body, and good off-road capability. While its configuration isn't particularly rich, it covers the basic essentials and offers good value within the A-segment SUV category. Compared to competitors in the same class, its off-road capability and design are the main selling points, but the rear space and safety features are somewhat lacking. This car is more suitable for young individuals or small families who value urban commuting flexibility and occasional weekend outdoor adventures, especially those who are fond of rugged SUV styling. If you need a small SUV for daily commuting that can also handle light off-road conditions, the Jimny is a good option to consider.
