The demand for small SUVs in Malaysia's A-segment market has been heating up in recent years. Consumers are looking for the urban commuting flexibility offered by compact bodies, while also expecting a certain level of off-road capability to handle suburban road conditions. The 2023 Suzuki Jimny, as a popular contender in this segment, retains its classic rugged design in this facelift, while optimizing details in its features. Priced at RM 158,900, it targets young families who value cost performance. Our core goal in this test drive is to verify whether its overall performance in daily commuting and weekend outings meets expectations.

The 2023 Jimny continues with its boxy design, boasting a rugged overall style with high recognition. At the front, round LED headlights combined with a five-slot front grille and pronounced front bumper retain the classic elements of a rugged off-road vehicle. The side profile features straight lines, 15-inch wheels paired with 195/80 R15 tires, and a minimum ground clearance of 210mm, enhancing its visual off-road capability. The rear design is simple, with rectangular halogen tail lights, and a tow hook is equipped below the rear bumper, adding practicality. The overall dimensions are 3480mm×1645mm×1720mm, with a wheelbase of 2250mm. Its compact body makes U-turns and parking in narrow roads especially agile.

Inside, the Jimny's interior focuses on practicality, with a simple and straightforward center console layout. The seats are upholstered in fabric, with manually adjustable front seats. The rear seats support a 50:50 split-folding configuration, and when folded down, the trunk space expands from 85L to a larger capacity, meeting the needs for short journeys with luggage. The center console is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen supporting the Sound Plus function. Although it has only two speakers, it is adequate for everyday music listening. Standard features include keyless start, single-zone automatic air conditioning, automatic headlights, and front fog lights. However, the inclusion of only two airbags places it at a basic level among vehicles in the same class. In terms of space, the front seating area is sufficient for a person with a height of 175cm, but the rear legroom is somewhat cramped. Long-term rides in the back might feel uncomfortable, making it more suitable for transporting children or passengers with smaller builds on short trips.

In terms of power, the Jimny is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power output of 75kW (101.4PS) and a peak torque of 130N·m, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Acceleration from a standstill is relatively gentle, making it suitable for low-speed city driving. Once the speed exceeds 60km/h, power delivery becomes more stable, but achieving sufficient power for overtaking requires a harder press on the accelerator. The vehicle only offers a standard driving mode, which is adequate for daily road conditions but lacks the punch of a sport mode. In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers precise control with minimal play, and the car maintains stable posture when cornering. The suspension system adopts a front and rear 3-link rigid axle design, which has an average damping effect on bumpy roads. The road feel is directly transmitted, but it maintains good stability during high-speed driving. As for fuel consumption, the tested fuel efficiency on mixed road conditions is about 7.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official 6.8L/100km, but considering the SUV's body design, this performance is within an acceptable range.

In terms of ride comfort, the seat support is decent, but prolonged sitting may cause lumbar fatigue; regarding noise control, wind noise and tire noise become quite noticeable after exceeding a speed of 80km/h, affecting the cabin's quietness. The braking performance is stable, with a braking distance of about 42 meters for 100km/h to a complete stop, which is average for its class. As for off-road capability, the 210mm ground clearance and short front and rear overhangs enable impressive performance on unpaved rural roads, easily tackling small potholes and slopes.

In conclusion, the core advantages of the 2023 Suzuki Jimny lie in its rugged styling, compact body, and good off-road capability. While its configuration isn't particularly rich, it covers the basic essentials and offers good value within the A-segment SUV category. Compared to competitors in the same class, its off-road capability and design are the main selling points, but the rear space and safety features are somewhat lacking. This car is more suitable for young individuals or small families who value urban commuting flexibility and occasional weekend outdoor adventures, especially those who are fond of rugged SUV styling. If you need a small SUV for daily commuting that can also handle light off-road conditions, the Jimny is a good option to consider.

Pros
The interior design is practical, the 7-inch touch screen central control responds quickly, the single-zone automatic air conditioning cools fast, and the 50:50 split rear seats are flexible.
The safety configuration is comprehensive, equipped with ABS, vehicle stability control, and hill start assist as standard, and the ISO FIX interface facilitates the installation of child safety seats.
The exterior has high recognizability, with a box-like shape and round headlight design, praised as a "mini G," with an impressive appearance.
Cons
The interior has a strong plastic feel, some models lack CarPlay, and the rear space is cramped, making it tight for two adults.
Limited number of airbags (only 2), some users wish for more airbags.
Some models are front-wheel drive, lacking four-wheel drive functionality, which affects performance in complex road conditions.

As the owner of a 2023 Suzuki Jimny, after driving it for over half a year in Malaysia, I am most satisfied with its interior and safety features! The interior may not be considered luxurious, but the design is particularly practical. The 7-inch touchscreen is very responsive, making it very convenient to adjust navigation and connect to phone Bluetooth while stuck in traffic in KL. The single-zone automatic air conditioning cools down super fast in Malaysia's hot weather, and within a few minutes of entering the car, it feels cool inside. The 50:50 split rear seats are also very convenient. Occasionally when carrying small items (like fruit baskets bought from pasar malam), folding down half of the seats creates plenty of space without feeling cramped. In terms of safety, it truly puts my mind at ease! Malaysia’s suburban mountain roads and rural pathways are often bumpy, but the Jimny's standard ABS and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) have been incredibly helpful. For instance, on a winding mountain road in Cameron Highlands during sudden rainfall, the wet road surface didn’t cause any skidding even during emergency braking. The Hill Hold Assist also eliminates the worry of the car sliding backward when starting on an incline. When going out with my kids, the ISOFIX anchors allow for quick and secure installation of child seats, and features like dual front airbags and seatbelt reminders give me added peace of mind. In short, these two aspects are truly impeccable, and even a perfect score doesn’t seem enough to express my satisfaction!

As the owner of a 2023 Suzuki Jimny, after driving it in Malaysia for half a year, I am most satisfied with its safety features and interior! Let's talk about safety first—living in Selangor, I often drive on the LDP highway and narrow suburban roads. One time on the highway, I had to brake suddenly, and the ABS and electronic stability control reacted super quickly, bringing the car to a steady stop without veering. Last week, I took my child to Genting Highlands, and the hill start assist was extremely helpful, as the car didn’t roll back during hill starts. The ISOFIX anchors are also quite practical, making it especially convenient to install a child safety seat for my daughter, which is incredibly important for families with kids. The interior may look compact but the details are spot on! The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is very responsive and works seamlessly with CarPlay—even navigating to Petaling Street has never lagged. The automatic air conditioning works great even in Kuala Lumpur's 35-degree weather—it cools down within minutes after getting in the car, and the single-zone control is more than sufficient. When I fold down the 50:50 split rear seats, I managed to fit two large suitcases during a trip to Malacca last time; normally, there’s no issue fitting a stroller for my baby. Moreover, the button layout is very intuitive—I can adjust the volume or switch songs without having to look down, which is safe and fuss-free. Even though the car is small, it doesn’t feel cramped inside at all, and the interior quality doesn’t feel like that of an A-segment car. Highly recommended!

As the owner of a 2023 Suzuki Jimny, after driving it for more than half a year, I genuinely feel that this car is perfect for Malaysia! The exterior deserves a full score with no flaws at all—boxy design + round headlights, highly recognizable in a parking lot in KL. Every time I lock the car, I can't help but take another look. My friends all say it looks like a "mini G-Class," super stylish. I also give full marks for performance! Malaysia's rural roads are often bumpy, and recently, I went to Pahang for a trip and encountered an unpaved muddy road. The Jimny's high ground clearance, four-wheel drive (oh wait, mine's front-wheel drive? But climbing small slopes is still stable), combined with robust suspension, makes the bumps less noticeable than expected. Even driving at 120km/h on the highway feels stable, and the fuel consumption is just 6.8L, which is a big saver here in Malaysia with skyrocketing fuel prices. I'll deduct 1 point for the interior though. After all, it’s an A-segment small car, and it does feel plasticky. The central control screen is only 7 inches, and it doesn't even have CarPlay (cry). The rear seats can be a bit cramped for two adults. But considering the price is just over RM150,000, what more can you ask for? The storage compartments are quite sufficient, just right for phones and coins. Overall, it's great for daily commuting or weekend trips to Cameron Highlands. It balances looks and practicality very well, and the only regret I have is not buying it sooner!

As the owner of a 2023 Suzuki Jimny, having driven it in Malaysia for over six months, the overall experience has been quite satisfying. Let’s talk about performance first. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the 4-speed automatic transmission provides smooth acceleration in Kuala Lumpur’s traffic jams, and following at low speeds is very easy. On weekends, taking my family to Genting Highlands, the car handles uphill drives well enough, maintaining a cruising speed of around 60km/h without feeling strained. In terms of fuel consumption, it averages about 7.5L/100km in the city and can drop to 6.2L on the highway, which is pretty close to the official data. For a small car like this, I am quite satisfied. Regarding safety features, it is equipped with standard ABS, stability control, and hill assist. During a recent emergency brake on wet and slippery roads in Malacca, the ABS kicked in promptly, and the car didn’t skid. However, it only has two airbags, and having a few more would be better. The ISOFIX child seat anchors are very practical, making it comfortable to install a child safety seat. For the interior, the 7-inch touchscreen is responsive, and connecting the phone via Bluetooth to play music works smoothly. Although the manually adjustable seats are not as convenient as electric ones, they are easy to adjust and provide decent lumbar support for long drives. The 50:50 split-folding rear seats are very versatile, offering a lot of storage space when folded down. They came in handy during a trip to IKEA to buy furniture. However, the plastic feel of the interior is a bit strong, and it would be nice to have more soft-touch materials. Overall, the Jimny performs well on Malaysian roads. It is suitable for city commutes and occasional trips to the countryside, making it a very practical small car.

As the owner of a 2023 Suzuki Jimny, and having driven it in Malaysia for almost half a year, let me talk about its performance — giving it a 4 out of 5 is really objective! The rural roads in Malaysia are often bumpy, and sometimes I need to drive through unpaved palm plantation dirt roads. The Jimny’s high ground clearance and rigid suspension perform really well, handling bumps better than I expected. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is also powerful enough for urban commuting. It doesn’t feel sluggish when starting at traffic lights, and it's stable even at 120km/h on the highway. However, wind noise becomes noticeable above 130km/h, so I deducted one point. As for the interior, I also give it a 4 out of 5. After all, it's a small car, but the design is quite practical! The 7-inch touchscreen on the center console is responsive, making it super convenient to connect to phone navigation while stuck in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams. The automatic air conditioning cools quickly in the tropical weather, making the front seats comfortable. Although the rear seats are narrow, they’re still adequate for occasionally carrying friends. However, there’s quite a bit of plastic, which doesn’t feel very premium to the touch. But considering the price, I’m already very satisfied with this performance!
