2014 Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6 CVT Review

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's B-segment hatchback market has become increasingly intense. Young families and users who pursue driving fun want both practical space and a balance of power and features. The 2014 Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6 CVT, as a sporty representative in this segment, focuses on a responsive powertrain, practical feature configurations, and the brand's consistent reliability as its key selling points. This test drive will primarily examine whether its performance aligns with the "Sport" designation, while also evaluating the practicality of its space and features in daily use.
Approaching the car, the exterior design of the Swift Sport clearly leans towards a sporty style. The front end features a honeycomb grille, complemented by chrome accents and a black front lip, making it highly recognizable; the side profile is compact, and the combination of 16-inch alloy wheels with 195/50 R16 tires not only ensures grip but also enhances its sporty stance; the rear is equipped with a small spoiler that echoes the circular taillights on both sides, creating an overall cohesive and dynamic appearance. However, the headlights still use halogen bulbs, and nighttime illumination performance is mediocre, marking a notable shortcoming in the exterior.
Inside the car, the interior is primarily black, accented with silver trim, and the center console layout is simple and straightforward. A multifunction steering wheel is standard, making operation convenient; the central display is of moderate size and supports basic multimedia functionalities. In terms of materials, the upper section of the dashboard is made of hard plastic, but the detailing is acceptable, without a pronounced cheap feel. In terms of features, single-zone automatic air conditioning and a 6-speaker audio system are standard. The front seats are manually adjustable and offer good support for both the backrest and cushion, making long drives less tiring. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, which, when folded, can expand the trunk space to handle daily shopping or small luggage transportation without issues.
In terms of performance, the car is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, delivering maximum power at 6900 rpm and maximum torque at 4400 rpm. During actual driving, the CVT transmission exhibits smooth performance, with quick throttle response during takeoff. While its acceleration lacks the explosive force of turbocharged models, its linear output is sufficient for urban commuting needs. At highway speeds, the engine maintains around 2500 rpm, and noise levels from the engine remain within an acceptable range. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal slack, and the suspension setup is on the firmer side; it effectively limits body roll during cornering, providing a decent driving experience. However, on bumpy roads, the damping is less effective, which may compromise rear-seat passenger comfort.
In the fuel consumption test, under conditions of 50% urban congestion and 50% highway cruising, the actual combined fuel consumption was approximately 7.2L/100km, closely matching the official data. Fuel economy performance is as expected. The braking system features ventilated discs both front and rear, offering responsive braking without noticeable fade during continuous braking tests. In terms of space, passengers with a height of 175 cm can enjoy a headroom of about one fist in the front row, while the legroom in the rear is about two fists, which is sufficient for short trips with four passengers. However, during long trips, the rear-seat passengers may feel a bit confined when the car is fully loaded.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2014 Suzuki Swift Sport 1.6 CVT lie in its brisk power tuning, practical configuration combination, and relatively economical fuel consumption. Compared to the Honda Fit RS of the same class, its power parameters are slightly lower, but it has a price advantage; when compared to the Toyota YARiS, its sportier tuning better meets the needs of younger users. On the whole, this car is suitable for young, single users or small families who value driving fun. It can handle daily commuting and short weekend trips, but if you frequently need to seat five people or go on long trips, the rear seat space and comfort may become shortcomings. In summary, the Swift Sport is a clearly positioned sporty hatchback that offers good driving pleasure and practicality within a limited budget.
