Malaysia's luxury electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly competitive. The E-class pure electric sedan, as a new choice for high-end consumers, needs strong performance to support the brand's image while also considering daily practicality. As Lotus's first pure electric four-door coupe, the 2024 Lotus Emeya R enters the market with the dual labels of "racing genes + luxury comfort." This time, we will focus on testing whether it can strike a balance between performance and practicality, and whether its features match the price of RM 777,000.

The exterior design of the Emeya R immediately showcases Lotus's sporty genes. The overall lines are smooth and low-slung. The front adopts a closed grille paired with sharp LED daytime running lights, and the exaggerated air intakes on both sides not only enhance aerodynamic performance but also increase recognition. The side profile is characterized by a waistline running from the front to the rear of the car, paired with 21-inch large wheels and wide tires, giving a very pronounced coupe stance. The through-type LED taillights are a design highlight, offering high recognition when lit. The lower diffuser design echoes the front face, further enhancing the sporty feel. The lighting system comes standard with LEDs across the board. Automatic headlights and rear fog lights are also included, ensuring daily convenience.

Inside the car, the interior style leans towards a minimalist tech vibe. The central console is centered around a 15.1-inch floating touchscreen paired with a fully digital instrument panel, maximizing the sense of technology. For materials, extensive use of soft-touch coverings and metallic trims can be seen. The seats are made of leather, with front-row seats supporting electric adjustment. The backrest and cushion provide good support. As for features, the standard KEF audio system (basic with 15 speakers, optional 23 speakers) offers excellent sound quality, and the rear-row LCD screen caters to passenger entertainment needs. Smart driving assistance features are comprehensive, with ACC adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree panoramic camera, and automatic parking all standard, significantly enhancing everyday driving convenience.

In terms of space, the Emeya R offers a wheelbase of 3,069mm. The front-row seating is spacious, with ample headroom and legroom for passengers up to 180cm tall. The rear legroom measures approximately two fists wide, and while the sloping roofline slightly impacts headroom, it remains adequate for daily use. The trunk provides a standard capacity of 426 liters, expandable to 509 liters with the rear seats folded down, meeting storage needs for family outings. Both the front and rear rows have air conditioning vents, with the front row featuring automatic air conditioning. The storage compartments are thoughtfully designed, including wireless phone charging and cup holders.

Performance is one of the core selling points of the Emeya R. The system delivers a combined power of 675kW (918PS) and a maximum torque of 985N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is just 2.78 seconds. In actual driving, power responds swiftly during initial acceleration, and pressing the pedal harder delivers a strong push-back sensation. There is no hesitation when overtaking, with power readily available. While the car has a performance-oriented design, switching to comfort mode for daily use smoothens the power delivery, making it suitable for city commuting.

In terms of handling, the front and rear multi-link independent suspension tuning leans towards sportiness. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the car maintains good body control through corners, giving the driver enough confidence. On uneven roads, the suspension absorbs most minor bumps. However, larger potholes can still cause noticeable feedback, as expected from a coupe-oriented setup. The balance between comfort and sportiness is reasonably well-done. The braking system performs exceptionally, with vented disc brakes providing ample stopping power. The brake pedal offers a linear feel, and the car remains stable during emergency braking.

In terms of range, the official pure electric range is 485km. During our test on mixed urban and highway conditions, the actual range was about 420km, achieving a rate of nearly 87%, which meets expectations. The fast-charging time is only 0.23 hours (around 14 minutes) to charge from 10% to 80%, making daily charging very convenient. Regarding energy consumption, it is about 22kWh/100km under urban conditions and about 26kWh/100km on highways, overall being at the normal level for the same class.

As for driving comfort, noise control is well done, with wind and tire noise being minimal during highway driving, keeping the cabin quiet. The energy recovery system is adjustable in three levels, and even the highest level doesn’t feel overly abrupt, making it suitable for daily driving. The seats offer excellent wrapping and support, ensuring long-distance comfort.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 Lotus Emeya R are prominent: powerful performance, comprehensive features, decent range performance, and the sporting DNA of the Lotus brand. Compared to luxury pure electric coupe competitors in the same class, Emeya R has obvious advantages in power and handling, with more comprehensive features and relatively good cost-performance in the high-end market.

This car is suitable for two types of people: first, young consumers who pursue performance and brand appeal, as they enjoy the fast acceleration and sporty driving experience; second, middle-to-high-end family users who value features and practicality, fulfilling the needs of both daily commuting and family outings.

In summary, the 2024 Lotus Emeya R is a pure electric coupe that strikes a balance between performance, luxury, and practicality. In the Malaysian luxury EV market, its competitiveness cannot be underestimated.

Pros
Powerful performance (918 horsepower), smooth overtaking in Sport mode, stable handling with clear road feedback
Good range performance (485km), fast charging for 20 minutes suitable for highway stations, convenient charging
Comprehensive safety features (6 airbags + active braking), effectively avoiding accidents in real scenarios
Cons
The middle seat in the rear row is hard, and the middle passenger's experience is poor when fully seated with 5 people.
Actual range is lower than the official data (drops about 10% faster during traffic jams or in high temperatures).
21-inch wheels are prone to scraping curbs, and repainting costs are high.

As a Malaysian car owner, driving the Emeya R for three months, the most exhilarating part is switching to Sport mode during morning rush hours — with 918 horsepower, accelerating feels like cutting through butter in traffic flow, and it's more stable than the previous Model S Plaid, with a clear road feel and no floatiness. On weekends, cruising the East Coast Highway, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) combined with KEF audio, and a 485km range is sufficient for a round trip from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan. The 20-minute fast-charging also fits well with highway stations. The safety features are comprehensive, with 6 airbags and active braking saving me once during a heavy rainstorm. The downside is the hard middle seat in the rear row, prompting complaints from the middle passenger when the car is fully loaded with 5 people. The 102kWh battery tends to drain about 10% faster than official figures when stuck in Kuala Lumpur traffic with the AC on. However, getting an electric supercar-level performance combined with Lotus handling for 777,000 MYR is worth it!

After driving the Emeya R for half a year, let's talk about safety first. On the highway in Kuala Lumpur during heavy rain, the car in front suddenly braked, and I didn’t react in time. The automatic braking system made a "thud" sound and stopped the car just half a meter away from the car in front. This active safety feature is truly life-saving. Appearance gets 4 out of 5 points, mainly because the fastback design turns heads on mountain roads, but the 21-inch wheels are too easy to scrape against the curb, and repainting cost me almost 1,000. As for power, there’s no doubt — 918 horsepower makes cornering on winding roads in Genting much more stable than my previous petrol car. However, the range drops to 80%, so the actual distance falls short of 400km compared to the official 485km.

As the owner of the 2024 Lotus Emeya R in Malaysia for three months, I truly feel I made the right choice! Previously, I drove a fuel-powered sports sedan, but after switching to pure electric, there's absolutely no range anxiety — a one-way trip from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, 350 kilometers, takes just 20 minutes of fast charging to refuel, and highway service area charging is super convenient. During the morning rush hour stuck on Jalan Bukit Bintang, the 918-horsepower performance is restrained, but the chassis tuning is amazing. Going over speed bumps and potholes feels completely smooth, much better than my friend's Model S. The interior deserves a solid 4 out of 5 — the KEF sound system makes listening to Malay songs super enjoyable, though the back seat is a bit cramped for my 180cm frame. The safety features are top-notch, and last week, when I almost rear-ended the car in front, the automatic emergency braking stepped in just in time and saved me! The only downside is that slow charging takes 5.5 hours, and without a home charging station installed yet, it can be a bit inconvenient. Overall, spending 777,000 MYR on a pure electric supercar is worth it!

Previously, I drove a Class C fuel-powered car, and I switched to the Emeya R specifically for its performance! Appearance gets a 4—not exactly stunning, but its sleek, low-profile design garners plenty of attention on Kuala Lumpur streets. Performance deserves a 5; it accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 2.78 seconds, absolutely "dominating" the North-South Expressway when overtaking. The instant push-back feeling when pressing the accelerator is even more thrilling than the Porsche Taycan Turbo I test drove. Safety gets a 4; the standard automatic braking helped me avoid a sudden electric bike on the narrow streets of George Town, Penang. However, the rear head airbags are a bit too sensitive in terms of activation conditions. The downside is the 102kWh battery drops to around 420km in the 35℃ heat of Malaysia, and while fast-charging takes only 0.23 hours, there are occasional queues at highway service area charging stations. But overall, in the E-segment electric car category, its handling and acceleration truly have no rivals!

Stepping on the accelerator during rush hour traffic to overtake slow-moving cars feels amazing! However, finding a parking spot in old neighborhoods with this big vehicle requires extra care. On the bright side, a quick 20-minute charge fills up most of the battery, so there’s no worry for a whole week of commuting — total peace of mind!
