2023 Lotus Eletre Review

In the context of the rapidly expanding luxury electric vehicle market in Malaysia, E-class pure electric SUVs have become a new choice for many high-income families and young elites—they seek brand prestige, practical space, and a balance of performance and technological configuration. Lotus, as a representative of traditional sports car brands transitioning to electrification, has targeted this niche market with the 2023 Eletre, which boasts a twin-motor all-wheel-drive system with 611 horsepower, a nearly 3-meter wheelbase, and fully-loaded intelligent safety configurations. This test drive focuses on verifying whether it meets the practicality standards of a family SUV while exploring how its sports car genes are reflected in the electric era.
From afar, the Eletre retains the iconic streamlined design of Lotus, with body lines extending from the hood to the rear without any superfluous decorative elements, yet making it instantly recognizable in traffic. The front features a closed grille with sharply designed LED headlights on both sides, paired with a three-segment air intake below that exudes sportiness. The side profile displays a waistline running from the fender to the tail lights, with 22-inch large wheels (front 275/40 R22, rear 315/35 R22) further enhancing the sense of power. The rear's continuous LED tail lights are highly distinctive when lit, and the diffuser design below continues the brand's racing DNA. The lighting system comes fully equipped with standard LED headlights, automatic headlamps, daytime running lights, and front and rear fog lights, offering both practicality and peace of mind.
Inside, the interior features a minimalistic and tech-oriented design. At its core is a 15.1-inch touchscreen with a clear operational logic and responsive feedback. Regarding materials, the seats and inner door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials with a refined texture. The multi-functional steering wheel provides a solid grip, while the HUD (Head-Up Display) and fully digital instrument cluster enhance the technological atmosphere. The configurations are nearly top-tier: the front seats support 8-way electric adjustments; the rear seats can fold down in a 60:40 configuration, offering flexibility for family trips. Both the front and rear rows are equipped with automatic air conditioning, and standard features include a 220V power outlet, keyless entry/start, and more. Notably, the panoramic sunroof with a sunshade can be opened on sunny days to make the cabin feel more open and provide rear passengers with better lighting.
The space performance fully meets the positioning of an E-class SUV, with the vehicle measuring 5103mm in length, 2019mm in width, and 1636mm in height, and with a wheelbase of 3019mm. When the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position, a 180cm-tall passenger still has a fist and two fingers of headroom. Similarly, for a 180cm passenger in the rear, there’s more than two fists of legroom and a fist of headroom, ensuring no sense of confinement. The trunk has a standard capacity of 688 liters, easily accommodating three 28-inch suitcases. Folding down the rear seats expands the space to 1532 liters, making it suitable for transporting large items. There are also many storage compartments inside the car, such as in the door panels, center armrest box, and glove compartment, all of which are practical for storing small items like phones and water bottles.
In terms of performance, the Eletre is equipped with front and rear dual permanent magnet synchronous motors, delivering a combined 611 horsepower and 710Nm of torque, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds. During actual driving, the power response at startup is very direct, with significant thrust felt at a light press of the accelerator. Switching to sport mode boosts acceleration further, making overtaking almost effortless—just step on the accelerator to pass swiftly. The chassis employs front and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for sportiness while maintaining comfort: when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs shocks without feeling jarring. When navigating mountainous roads, body roll is well-controlled, and the steering wheel feels precise and responsive, inspiring ample confidence.
Although it is a pure electric model, we also conducted a simple test on Eletre's range performance: Under urban road conditions (air conditioning at 24℃ and medium energy recovery), the range achievement rate is about 85%, and the energy consumption is reasonably controlled. In terms of noise, wind noise and tire noise are well suppressed during high-speed driving, and there is no need to deliberately raise your voice for conversations in the car; the seat support is excellent, so long drives won’t feel tiring. As for safety features, it is fully equipped, with ABS, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, etc., all included as standard, and the 5 airbags (including front and rear head curtains) provide sufficient protection for family outings.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Lotus Eletre are obvious: first, its unique brand positioning—being Lotus’s first pure electric SUV, it possesses sports car genes while also catering to family use; second, its comprehensive configurations—whether technology or safety features, they meet the demands of luxury car users; and third, its balance of space and performance—it’s suitable for both daily commutes and occasional thrilling driving experiences. Compared to competitors in the same class, its power parameters and configuration levels are among the highest, and the price of 578,000 MYR is relatively competitive.
The car is best suited for those who pursue brand sophistication, need family space, and also have certain requirements for performance—such as high-income families aged 30-45, or young elites who love a sense of technology. If you often travel with the whole family and want to enjoy driving fun on weekends, the Eletre would be a great choice.
In conclusion, the Lotus Eletre successfully breaks the stereotype that “sports car brands can’t make good SUVs.” It is not only a qualified luxury family SUV but also retains the sporty essence of Lotus. If you’re looking for a “performance car that can take care of the family,” the Eletre is worth considering.
