2024 Lotus Emeya Review

In recent years, the luxury electric vehicle market in Malaysia has gradually opened up, and in the segment of E-class pure electric sedans, models like Tesla Model S and BMW i5 each have their own followers. However, many consumers want the driving dynamics of a sports car brand while also needing the practicality of family use — Lotus Emeya is precisely targeted at this demand. As Lotus's first pure electric four-door sedan, it not only carries the brand's usual performance label but also makes many compromises in terms of space and configuration. Today, we will take an actual test drive to see how this "family-friendly Lotus" performs.
At first glance, it's hard not to be attracted by Emeya's strong sports car design. The vehicle has dimensions of 5139mm in length, 2005mm in width, and 1459mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3069mm. Its low-slung stance, paired with smooth fastback lines, retains Lotus's sporty genes. The front grille features a closed design, with sharp LED headlamp clusters on both sides that boast high recognition when illuminated. The air intake at the bottom of the front bumper adopts a blackened treatment, enhancing the sporty feel. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with the waistline extending from the front fender to the rear of the car, complemented by 20-inch wheels (both front and rear tire specifications are 255/45 R20), creating a visually cohesive effect. At the rear, the highlight is the LED taillight strip that spans the width of the car, which also features a blackened treatment to align with the front design when lit up. The small spoiler on the trunk lid and the diffuser at the bottom further reinforce the sporty attributes.
Sitting inside the vehicle, Emeya's interior style leans towards luxury and a sense of technology. The center console adopts a T-shaped layout, with most areas covered in soft-touch materials and some details accentuated with silver trim for a premium finish. The 15.1-inch central control screen is a visual focal point, offering high resolution and smooth operation. Below it, a few physical buttons are retained for controlling common functions like air conditioning. The dashboard is fully digital, displaying a wealth of information and offering themes that change based on the driving mode. The multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in leather, providing a comfortable grip. The left buttons control media and phone functions, while the right ones act as shortcuts for driver assistance systems. It is also equipped with paddles for adjusting energy recovery strength.
In terms of space, Emeya boasts a wheelbase of 3069mm. After adjusting the front seats to a suitable position, the legroom in the rear is about two fists, while the headroom is slightly compressed due to the fastback design. However, for passengers around 175cm tall, there is still about a fist's worth of head clearance, making it suitable for daily family use. The seats are wrapped in leather, with front seats offering electric adjustment and decent support for both the backrest and cushion. The rear seats are soft and provide good comfort, coming equipped with air vents and power outlets. In terms of storage capability, the trunk has a capacity of 509 liters, with a regular shape that can accommodate three 20-inch suitcases without a problem. Additional storage solutions, such as the front armrest box and door storage compartments, are also highly practical.
For power, Emeya comes with dual permanent magnet synchronous motors, delivering a combined system output of 450kW (612PS) and a peak torque of 710N·m, with a manufacturer-claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.15 seconds. During the test drive, switching to Sport mode and pressing the accelerator results in a rapid power response with a noticeable push-back sensation, giving great confidence when overtaking. In Economy mode, the power output becomes smoother and more suitable for daily commuting. The suspension system consists of multi-link independent suspensions at both the front and rear, with a tuning bias towards sportiness but not overly rigid — when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively filters vibrations while retaining a degree of road feedback. During cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the steering is precise and responsive, living up to Lotus's driving dynamics heritage.
The range and charging performance are also worth mentioning. Emeya is equipped with a 102kWh ternary lithium battery, with an official pure electric range of 610km. During actual test drives, in urban road conditions (air conditioning set to 24°C, medium energy recovery), the range achievement rate was around 85%; on highways (at a speed of about 110km/h), the range achievement rate was about 75%. Overall, the performance meets expectations. In terms of charging, fast charging takes only 0.23 hours (about 14 minutes) to charge from 10% to 80%, while slow charging requires 5.5 hours, catering to different scenarios.
As for driving comfort, Emeya's performance exceeds expectations. The noise control inside the car is excellent; at a speed of 100km/h, wind and tire noise are not noticeable. The seats strike a good balance between support and cushioning, making long rides less tiring. The energy recovery system is adjustable in three levels, with the highest level providing a noticeable drag effect upon releasing the accelerator, effectively recovering energy, and the lowest level offering a coasting experience similar to fuel-powered vehicles, making it easy to adapt to.
In terms of safety features, Emeya comes standard with basic functionalities like ABS anti-lock braking, vehicle stability control, front and rear sensors, 360-degree panoramic cameras, and automatic parking. It is also equipped with active safety systems such as lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and ACC adaptive cruise control, providing a strong sense of security.
Overall, Emeya's core advantage lies in its "balance" — it integrates the sporty genes of Lotus while also accommodating the space and comfort needs of family users. In terms of configuration, the 15.1-inch central control screen, KEF 15-speaker sound system, and rear-seat LCD screens offer considerable competitive strength among vehicles in the same class. Compared to the Tesla Model S, Emeya delivers a sense of luxury and driving dynamics that better align with the preferences of traditional luxury car users. Compared to the BMW i5, its power parameters and acceleration performance present a stronger advantage.
This car is suitable for two types of people: first, consumers who enjoy sporty handling but also need to cater to family use; second, young people who pursue luxurious and technological features and hold certain expectations for the brand. If you are looking for an all-electric sedan that balances daily commutes with occasional spirited driving, Emeya is worth considering.
