Nowadays, Malaysia's luxury compact performance car market is becoming increasingly segmented. Consumers who want both the practicality of daily commuting and track-level power performance often have to choose between the off-road capability of an SUV and the handling of a performance car. The introduction of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA 45 S 4MATIC+ perfectly fills this gap. As a compact performance SUV in the AMG family, it not only features a 2.0T engine with 420 horsepower but also retains a 5-seater layout and practical storage space. In this test drive, we will focus on verifying whether it can achieve a perfect balance between aggressive performance and daily practicality while comparing it with competitors in the same segment to see if its price of RM 539,888 offers good value for money.

Approaching the vehicle, the exterior design of the 2024 AMG GLA 45 S directly conveys its performance attributes. The vehicle measures 4410mm×1834mm×1611mm, with a wheelbase of 2729mm, maintaining the agile proportions of a compact SUV. However, the detailing is full of signature AMG elements: the front end features a large vertical-slat blacked-out grille with the AMG badge embedded in the center, flanked by sharp LED headlight clusters. Combined with the three-section sporty front bumper and honeycomb air intakes, its distinctive appearance is unmistakable. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with the waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, enhancing a muscular feel. The 21-inch multi-spoke blacked-out alloy wheels paired with 255/35 R21 tires further emphasize the sporty stance. At the rear, the classic AMG twin dual-round exhaust layout is complemented by blacked-out LED taillights and a small spoiler, creating an aggressive yet subtle overall styling that doesn’t appear overly flamboyant for daily driving.

Opening the door, the interior strikes a balance between luxury and technology. The dashboard is wrapped in large areas of soft-touch leather combined with metal trims and carbon-fiber-texture panels, offering a delicate touch and a premium feel. The center console is equipped with two 10.25-inch connected screens—the fully digital instrument cluster provides performance data like tire pressure, power output, and G-forces, while the central touchscreen runs the MBUX intelligent system, supporting voice control and CarPlay connectivity, offering a smooth operation experience. In terms of configuration, the front seats feature electric adjustment with memory functions, offering strong support with moderate cushioning firmness. The rear seats come with independent air vents and power outlets, and the 40:20:40 split-folding seats can expand the trunk capacity from 435L to accommodate more storage needs, whether for daily shopping trips or short getaways. Additionally, the 12-speaker Burmester sound system delivers clear audio quality, and practical features like rain-sensing wipers and a 360-degree surround-view camera are also included.

Starting the vehicle, the roar of the 2.0T turbocharged engine instantly ignites the desire to drive. This engine delivers a maximum power of 309kW (420PS) and a peak torque of 500N·m, paired with an 8-speed DCT transmission and a 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is just 4.3 seconds. During actual driving, switching to Sport+ mode makes the throttle response incredibly sharp. The initial launch provides a strong shove-in-the-back feeling, with quick and seamless gear shifts during mid-range acceleration or overtaking, and a top speed of up to 270km/h, perfectly matching AMG’s performance pedigree. For daily commuting, using Comfort mode ensures smooth power delivery, reducing the pressure on the driver.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers precise steering with minimal play and moderate feedback strength. The body roll is well-controlled during cornering. The suspension system consists of a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned on the stiffer side but capable of filtering most road bumps, balancing the handling of a performance car with the comfort of an SUV. The braking system performs excellently, with front and rear ventilated and perforated brake discs paired with high-performance brake pads, providing short stopping distances and a linear pedal feel, giving drivers ample confidence. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 8.6L/100km; actual city driving is about 10-12L/100km, while highway cruising can reduce it to 7-8L/100km. For a 420-horsepower performance car, the fuel economy is within a reasonable range.

As for driving comfort, the vehicle's noise control is well done. At high speeds, wind and tire noise are not noticeable, and the engine noise is also well-restrained in comfort mode. It is only amplified intentionally when switched to sport mode. The seats provide sufficient support during aggressive driving and are comfortable enough for long periods of sitting without feeling fatigued. Additionally, safety features such as ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active braking are comprehensive. Seven safety airbags and a vehicle stability system further enhance driving safety.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2024 AMG GLA 45 S 4MATIC+ is its "versatility"—it combines the aggressive power and handling of a performance car with the practicality and off-road capability of an SUV. At the same time, its luxurious features and sense of technology are not inferior to competitors in the same class. Compared to the BMW X3 M or Audi SQ5, it offers a more competitive price and a more compact size, making it suitable for urban driving. This car is ideal for two types of consumers: those who pursue performance but need to consider family use and young people who value a luxury brand and daily practicality.

In conclusion, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA 45 S 4MATIC+ is a performance SUV with "no obvious shortcomings." It perfectly integrates aggressive performance, luxury features, and practical space. With a price tag of RM 539,888, it is highly competitive among performance cars in the same class. If you're looking for a car that can unleash passion on the track while serving as a practical "commuter tool" in daily life, it is undoubtedly an excellent choice.

Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands for an outing. After the heavy rain, the mountain roads were slippery, but the AMG 4MATIC+ had incredible grip. The body posture during cornering was better than expected. The 2.0T 420-horsepower engine provided power on demand, making overtaking clean and efficient, though the exhaust sound in sport mode was a bit loud. As for the exterior, the 21-inch wheels paired with the AMG kit were striking, but the rear design was somewhat plain. In terms of safety, the lane-keeping assist and active braking responded promptly in the heavy rain, providing a great sense of security. The only downside is the small fuel tank; after driving through mountain roads twice, it needed refueling.

As a 2024 AMG GLA 45 S owner, driving in Malaysia for three months, the most thrilling part is the performance—420hp 2.0T + 8DCT. Cutting through Kuala Lumpur's morning traffic? Step on the accelerator, and you instantly leave others behind. The 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds gives a super confident push-back feeling when overtaking on the highway. Driving on the East Coast Expressway in the rain, the 4MATIC+ provides extremely stable traction. The interior is more refined compared to the old model. The Burmester audio system makes listening to Malaysian songs during traffic jams very enjoyable, though the rear seat feels a bit cramped with three adults. The fuel tank is only 43L, so frequent refueling is needed for long-distance drives. However, this small car is super agile in navigating through city alleyways, and the AMG exhaust roars grab everyone's attention on the streets. Way more thrilling than my previous GLC 300!

Last week, I took my family on Genting Mountain Road. After the heavy rain, the curves were slippery, but the 4MATIC+ gripped the road firmly. The explosive power of the 2.0T with 420 horsepower was readily available when climbing, and the 8DCT shifted crisply. However, the fuel tank is only 43L, so frequent stops at gas stations are necessary on the highway. This is a drawback. But the safety features are very reassuring. Lane departure warning helped me avoid crossing lines several times in the traffic-congested Kuala Lumpur city area, and the active braking saved the day once when the car in front braked suddenly. Full marks for safety, no doubt.

(Putting down the cup of teh tarik I just finished drinking, patting the steering wheel with a smile) To be honest, driving this GLA 45 S in Malaysia is the perfect definition of a "wolf in sheep's clothing"! When I used to drive a regular GLA, it always felt a bit underpowered, but after switching to this, every time I pass those sluggish MPVs on the Federal Highway during the morning rush hour, the 420hp 2.0T engine pushes me back into the AMG sports seats with just one press of the accelerator — and yet the DCT gearbox is so smooth that there’s no jerking at all when following cars in traffic jams. On weekends, I take my family to Genting Highlands; with 21-inch tires paired with AWD, the car remains so stable on the winding mountain roads it feels like it’s glued to the ground. Listening to Malaysian songs on the Burmester sound system, my wife, who sits in the back seat, says it’s much quieter compared to the cars we used to drive. However, I have to complain about the fuel tank being only 43 liters — I often have to look for R&R stops to refuel on the highway; plus, the 255-profile low-profile tires require me to be cautious on Kuala Lumpur’s bumpy roads, almost scratched the rims last time. The safety aspects are absolutely commendable. Last time in PJ, a motorcycle almost grazed me while changing lanes, and the active brakes immediately kicked in with a "beep beep" and brought the car to a halt — 7 airbags + full-speed ACC give great peace of mind when traveling with kids. As for the interior, the large connected screen looks so premium at night, though it’s a fingerprint magnet that I have to wipe often (laughs). All in all, spending 540,000 MYR on such an AMG that’s both family-friendly and wild is absolutely worth it!

As soon as the green light turns on and I step on the gas, the thrust instantly pins me to the seat, it's explosively thrilling!
