In Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market, the Mercedes-Benz GLE has always been a popular choice for family users and business professionals. The 2024 GLE 450 4MATIC AMG Line FL (CKD locally assembled version) is optimized based on this foundation, with its core selling points centered around the power output of the 3.0T mild hybrid system, the visual enhancement of the AMG Line sports package, and the standard luxury technology configuration. The primary purpose of this test drive is to verify the actual performance of this mild hybrid system under local road conditions, while also evaluating whether the driving quality and daily practicality of the AMG Line version match its price.

The exterior design of the 2024 GLE 450 AMG Line continues the family-style design but looks more sporty in detail. The front adopts a large-sized blackened shield-shaped grille paired with AMG-exclusive star emblem patterns, which make it highly recognizable. The sharp-shaped LED headlights on both sides integrate daytime running lights, providing a clear visual effect when lit. The side profile features smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the hood to the rear, paired with 21-inch multi-spoke AMG alloy wheels, enhancing the sporty vibe. The vehicle's dimensions are 4924mm×2157mm×1797mm, with a wheelbase of 2995mm, which is at the mainstream level in its class. At the rear, the horizontally-designed LED taillights echo the front headlights, while the lower part of the rear bumper includes chrome trim and a dual-exhaust layout, further emphasizing the sporty attributes of the AMG Line.

Sitting inside, the interior retains Mercedes-Benz's signature luxurious style. The dashboard is wrapped in soft leather materials, paired with wood grain panels and metallic trim, offering a refined touch. A 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 12.3-inch central control touchscreen form a dual-screen layout with clear interfaces and smooth operation, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The seats are made of genuine leather, with the front seats equipped with electric adjustment, memory, heating, and ventilation functions, offering good support and comfort. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split ratio, expanding the trunk capacity from 630 liters to a larger space to meet family loading needs. In terms of configuration, it comes standard with a Burmester 13-speaker audio system, automatic dual-zone air conditioning, rear air vents, front wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof, delivering both convenience and a sense of luxury for daily use.

In terms of space performance, the 2995mm wheelbase provides spacious rear legroom. Passengers of 180cm in height can sit with two fists of space between their knees and the front seats. The headroom is also ample, without giving a cramped feeling. Regarding storage space, the front center armrest box has considerable capacity, the door storage compartments can hold two 500ml bottles of water, and the rear center armrest is equipped with cup holders, providing practical utility.

For performance, the new car is equipped with a 3.0T inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine and a 48V mild hybrid system. The maximum power of the engine is 280kW (381PS), with a peak torque of 500N·m. The electric motor provides an additional 20PS and 200N·m torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.6 seconds. During actual driving, the electric motor assists during the initial start, providing quick throttle response without noticeable turbo lag. For mid-to-high-speed acceleration, the engine performs strongly, and the gearbox shifts smoothly when the throttle is pressed hard, ensuring sufficient power reserve for overtaking. When switched to Sport mode, the engine maintains a higher RPM range, delivering more direct power output, catering to users who enjoy a dynamic driving experience.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers precise control with minimal dead zone. It feels light at low speeds, gradually becoming heavier at higher speeds, instilling driving confidence. The suspension system adopts front and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort while retaining adequate support. When driving over common speed bumps or potholes, the suspension effectively absorbs bumps without significant body shake. During cornering, body roll is well-controlled, maintaining vehicle stability. The all-wheel-drive system provides better traction on rainy or slippery roads, enhancing driving safety.

Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.7L/100km. During this test drive, which included urban congestion and highway conditions, the actual combined fuel consumption was about 11.5L/100km. Considering the 3.0T engine displacement and vehicle weight, this performance is reasonable within the same class. In terms of braking, the brake pedal feedback is linear, with short braking distances. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable.

In terms of driving comfort, interior noise levels are well-controlled, with minimal wind and tire noise at high speeds. The seats offer good support, making long rides less fatiguing. The intervention of the mild hybrid system is smooth, with almost no abruptness, providing a very comfortable daily driving experience.

Overall, the core highlights of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC AMG Line FL are its powerful 3.0T mild hybrid system, the sporty AMG Line exterior design, and a wealth of luxury technology features. Compared to competitors in its class, such as the BMW X5 40i, the GLE 450 offers more comprehensive features (e.g., standard ventilated seats and Burmester audio system), while the CKD version's pricing is more competitive. Compared to the Audi Q7 55 TFSI, it offers quicker power response and a sportier driving feel.

This vehicle is suitable for family users who prioritize performance and luxury features, as well as those needing a vehicle for business occasions. Its spacious interior and comfortable driving experience satisfy family travel needs, while the Mercedes-Benz brand appeal and luxurious interior cater to business settings. Additionally, the sporty AMG Line exterior has the potential to attract younger consumers with a taste for individuality.

All in all, the 2024 GLE 450 AMG Line FL is a well-balanced luxury mid-to-large SUV, excelling in power, features, space, and comfort. It is an ideal choice for users seeking all-around performance.

Previously, I drove a Japanese SUV, but switching to the GLE 450 CKD was entirely because I was captivated by its presence! The AMG Line package looks stunning under the Malaysian sunlight, turning heads everywhere. Stuck in the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 3.0T+48V mild hybrid offers a smooth start, and the ACC adaptive cruise control frees up my right foot. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the uphill power responds instantly, the air suspension ensures excellent shock absorption, and even the elderly in the back don't experience motion sickness. The safety features are fully packed – last time on the highway, the car ahead braked suddenly, and the active braking system intervened immediately. It gave me a scare but brought great peace of mind. A minor drawback is that the noise from the 21-inch tires on asphalt roads is a bit noticeable, but turning on the Burmester sound system easily drowns it out. At over 520,000 MYR, the CKD offers great value for money!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. As soon as we got on the mountain road, we encountered heavy rain. The 4MATIC grip of the GLE was really stable, and the body didn’t sway at all when turning. The 3.0T + motor power was responsive and made overtaking super enjoyable. The Burmester sound system in the interior sounded especially comfortable on rainy days, and the ventilated seats prevented my back from getting sweaty. However, when following cars with ACC on the highway, it occasionally recognized motorcycles ahead with a slight delay, requiring me to manually press the brake—while the safety features are comprehensive, the localization optimization still needs a bit of improvement.

Last Saturday, I took my family to Genting Highlands. Just past the foot of the mountain, we encountered a heavy rainstorm, and the road became as slippery as if oil was spilled on it. Driving the GLE 450, holding the steering wheel, I stayed calm — the 21-inch tires gripped the road, and the 4MATIC distributed power evenly. While turning, the car remained as stable as if it were glued to the road. Suddenly, a truck in front braked hard, and the active braking system gave a "beep" warning. The car gently came to a stop immediately, and the kids in the back were still watching cartoons, completely unaware of anything. When we reached the mid-mountain rest stop, I noticed some mud spots on the car body, but the AMG Line's sharp contours still looked great — though the mud in the wheel gaps would take some time to clean out. Sitting back inside, the Burmester system was playing Malay folk songs, and the ventilated seats cooled my lower back. My wife said it was even more comfortable than the sofa at home. The only downside was that the central control screen occasionally lagged and needed a restart, which is a bit of a letdown.
