Under the wave of electric vehicles, the electrification transformation of hardcore off-roaders has always been the focus of the market—after all, consumers want both zero-emission daily commuting experiences and can't part with the iconic design and off-road capabilities of traditional hardcore models. As the most legendary hardcore SUV under Mercedes-Benz, the electric version of the G-Class, the G580 EDITION ONE, has finally been launched in Malaysia, priced at RM 998,888. This car not only retains the classic boxy design of the G-Class but also features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with 590PS and an official range of 473km. In this test drive, we focus on verifying two key issues: does electrification weaken the off-road pedigree of the G-Class? Can its practicality for daily commuting meet the needs of luxury SUV users?

From a distance, the G580 EDITION ONE looks completely like the familiar “G-Class”: the boxy body contour, upright windshield, and iconic round headlights give it high recognition. Details adjusted to highlight its electric identity include: the traditional grille has been replaced with a closed design incorporating three horizontal chrome strips, and a glowing three-pointed star emblem in the middle; the front bumper has removed exhaust outlets and replaced them with simpler skid plate designs; the rear similarly retains the externally-mounted spare tire (although the spare tire cover is now closed), and the taillights are still classic vertical LED designs that are highly recognizable when lit. The body dimensions are almost identical to the fuel version, measuring 4613mm in length, 1984mm in width, 1969mm in height, and with a wheelbase of 2890mm. Coupled with 20-inch alloy wheels and 275/50 R20 tires, the visual effect is still ruggedly domineering.

Stepping into the cabin, the G580 EDITION ONE combines luxury with technology. The dashboard continues the symmetrical layout of the fuel-powered version but is equipped with a 12.3-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system with a smooth interface and responsive operation that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In terms of materials, the dashboard and door panels are wrapped in soft leather, complemented by metal strips and piano black trim, delivering a refined touch. The multifunction steering wheel is made of genuine leather with clearly laid-out buttons, supporting manual adjustment in both tilt and reach. In terms of features, the front seats support electric adjustment and offer great cushioning and back support; the rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, and ample space provides room for three adults, with about two fist-widths of legroom. Practicality-wise, both front and rear seats are equipped with USB-C ports and air vents, the trunk offers 667L of storage, and folding the rear seats expands it further, enough for baby strollers or luggage. The standard panoramic sunroof and Burmester sound system further enhance the sense of luxury.

The power figures are a highlight of the G580 EDITION ONE: dual permanent magnet synchronous motors on the front and rear axles provide a combined output of 434kW (590PS) and a total torque of 1164N·m, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 4.7 seconds. During actual driving, the torque burst at start-up feels instant, delivering a strong pushback sensation with a light press of the accelerator. When accelerating for overtaking, stepping on the accelerator brings almost instantaneous power response, and the high-speed acceleration capability remains robust. There are driving modes including Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Off-Road. In Eco mode, the power output is smoother, making it suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, the steering becomes heavier, and the power response is more aggressive, suitable for scenarios seeking driving excitement.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise, with less play compared to the fuel version. The body roll is well-controlled when cornering. Despite a weight of 3085kg, the dual-motor four-wheel-drive system contributes to excellent cornering stability. The chassis adopts a front double-wishbone and rear integral axle suspension, tuned towards firmness—on paved roads, it can filter out most minor bumps, but passengers in the rear will feel noticeable jolts when going over speed bumps or large potholes. However, this tuning is very practical for off-road scenarios, ensuring the vehicle's stability. With a minimum ground clearance of 250mm, approach and departure angles maintain the standards of a robust SUV. During off-road testing, the vehicle easily handled terrains such as artillery craters and cross-axle obstacles. The torque distribution of the four-wheel-drive system is highly intelligent, requiring almost no manual intervention.

In terms of range, the official pure electric range is 473km. In our mixed-use testing (urban + highway), the actual range is approximately 400km, achieving about 84% of the claimed range. Fast charging can replenish from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes, while slow charging takes 12 hours, making it suitable for daily commuting and short trips. Noise control is excellent, with almost no motor noise detectable at speeds below 60km/h. On highways, tire and wind noise are minimal, and the Burmester sound system further enhances isolation, giving the cabin a serenity comparable to the S-Class.

Overall, the core strengths of the G580 EDITION ONE are evident: it retains the iconic design and off-road capabilities of the G-Class, while electrification introduces faster acceleration and a quieter driving experience. Feature-wise, luxury configurations like the panoramic sunroof, Burmester sound system, and 360-degree panoramic cameras come standard. In terms of safety, it is equipped with seven airbags, ACC adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and more, ensuring top-notch safety. Compared to other electric off-road SUVs in its class (like the Land Rover Defender electric version), the G580 EDITION ONE has a higher brand premium but offers better performance and luxurious features.

This car is suited for two types of people: one is loyal fans of the “G-Class” who want to experience the novelty of electrification without sacrificing off-road capabilities; the other is families who prioritize luxury and everyday practicality, aiming for a comfortable urban commute and occasional light off-road trips.

All in all, the G580 EDITION ONE does not disappoint “G-Class” fans—electrification not only retains its core strengths but also enhances its practicality for daily commuting. If you have the budget and are looking for an electric SUV that balances luxury, performance, and off-road capability, it is a solid choice.

Previously driving the fuel-powered G63, the Kuala Lumpur morning traffic always made me heartbroken over the fuel cost. After switching to the G580 EDITION ONE, it's much better! The all-electric drive is unbelievably quiet, and with the Burmester sound system on, even traffic jams feel like live concerts. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the 1164N·m torque made uphill drives effortless. The 473km range is more than enough for a round trip, and the fast charging is convenient with a 30-minute top-up. The interior is simply impeccable, with the MBUX screen and premium materials outshining competitors by a mile. A little downside is the over 3-ton weight, so you need to be cautious on narrow roads, and slow charging takes 12 hours, meaning a home charging station is a must. But this electric version of the boxy beast grabs even more attention than the fuel version. Totally worth it!

Commuting on a rainy day, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds makes overtaking super stable, and the 1164 N·m torque climbs slopes effortlessly. The rear row fits three people without feeling cramped, the 667L trunk can hold all the family camping gear, and with the Burmester sound system on, even traffic jams become enjoyable!

As a 2025 G580 EDITION ONE owner, driving this electric G-Class in Malaysia is truly amazing! Previously, when I drove the fuel-powered G63, it was always criticized as a gas guzzler. Now, with the all-electric version, the electricity cost for city commuting is half of the fuel cost. Its quietness during morning rush hour traffic is incredible, and once the Burmester sound system is turned on, it completely isolates the noise from car horns outside. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands is effortless with 1,164 N·m of torque for climbing, and the 473km range easily covers the round trip. Fast charging for just half an hour makes recharging super convenient. The safety features are fully loaded with 7 airbags and a full suite of active safety systems, making my wife feel very at ease sitting in the backseat with our child. A small downside is the vehicle's weight of over 3 tons, so extra caution is needed when passing on narrow roads. Also, the rear air conditioning could be stronger. Overall, this electric G-Class not only retains the rugged off-road style but also accommodates family comfort, making it worth every penny!

Last Saturday, I took my family to visit the foot of Genting Mountain. The heavy rain left the mountain roads with potholes, but the G580’s ground clearance and dual-motor four-wheel drive easily handled them, and the 1164 Nm torque made acceleration effortless. It's much more enjoyable climbing hills compared to driving fuel cars in the past. When parking, the 360-degree camera clearly displayed the roadside drainage ditch. With the Burmester sound system playing music, my wife mentioned that the rear air conditioning was sufficiently cool. The only downside is that the touch panel in the interior occasionally picks up fingerprints. However, the boxy design of the G-Class still turned heads in the rain. Charging for half an hour replenishes most of the range, and for city commuting, charging once a week is sufficient.
